The upshot of the Ferdinand and Exceller incidents is that now it is common in sales contracts for offshore deals to include a clause that the seller has the right to first refusal should the buyer decide to sell the horse at some point in time in the future. The result is stallions that have been sold offshore are now returning to the US after their foreign breeding careers and typically wind up at Old Friends or other retirement stables.

Thoroughbreds are probably the last horses you’re going to see in the slaughter pipeline. After they’re done racing people buy them and retrain them for other equestrian sports. It wouldn’t make much sense to sell an off the track thoroughbred to an auction where they’ll make the slaughter price of about $800 when they can get several thousands selling them to new homes

Why don't they require a percentage of the sales of these horses to care for the vast majority that won't make it in racing or break down, thoroughbreds can be retrained for other things but it is hard because they are so high strung....it is a sick industry...but the vast wealth involved should ensure they are ALL taken care of rather than sent to slaughter, which is what happens to very many....

    • @myronschabe

@@Tyson-co4oc Yeah, MOST BREEDING STALLIONS, what I am talking about is the vast numbers that are bred for the hopes of being a good racehorse in the first couple years of there life, these are the ones that are most vulnerable. Thoroughbreds are a hot breed and they require a lot of experience, generally, if they don't make it as a racehorse, so they end up in the worst of situations oftentimes.

Those "black guys" are extremely good at what they do, which is why they are the ones doing it. There is also a black gal at some of the sales. But they do the job they do because they are the best in the business - and escorting TBs in the sales ring is NOT an easy job. I am sure they are very well compensated for their efforts.
