      I've been there, yes you see the wealth of the world. But me & my friend were there to see the yearlings. Gorgeous can't describe them.
      The horse world is a fantasy land. The money is unbelievable.
      In the different disciplines.

    I love thoroughbreds, I foxhunt & own them. They are courageous animals. and athletic. Beautiful.

    All those horses do NOT have a happy ending. Even Ferdinand, he ended up in Japan and when they were done with him they sent him to slaughter. There are too many horses bred and all does not end well for them.

      @Francis Bañares That's not the same at all... One is an unfeeling clump of cells that gets it's development cut off at the start, the other is an animal bred, raised, trained, raced and ultimately abandoned by us humans for our own benefit and enjoyment.

      The upshot of the Ferdinand and Exceller incidents is that now it is common in sales contracts for offshore deals to include a clause that the seller has the right to first refusal should the buyer decide to sell the horse at some point in time in the future. The result is stallions that have been sold offshore are now returning to the US after their foreign breeding careers and typically wind up at Old Friends or other retirement stables.

    Iam a photographer and in 2008 I was at Santa Anita race track in the paddock and I took photos of Zenyatta way before she was famous I have these photos till today and don’t know what to do with them..

    Tell us what you do with the horses after using them to win millions? The one's that aren't the very top winner's or don't win at all. Selling them for dog food.. Where they are miss treated before being brutally killed. Horrible people in this industry. It need to stop. They should have to care for these animals until they die naturally. This business should not be glamerized.

      Unfortunately it does happen. However a good portion are sold to become successful show jumping horses too. The people who dump the unsuccessful horses at slaughter auctions are only in it for the “business” and are the scum of the earth. Anyone who actually cares about the horse will find a new job for them to be more successful in.

      Thoroughbreds are probably the last horses you’re going to see in the slaughter pipeline. After they’re done racing people buy them and retrain them for other equestrian sports. It wouldn’t make much sense to sell an off the track thoroughbred to an auction where they’ll make the slaughter price of about $800 when they can get several thousands selling them to new homes

      @@craziedaisy1499 I have a slaughter pipeline baby sitting in my barn as we speak. You definitely do see a couple of them. You just have to look through the sea of quarter horses (which make up close to 2/3 of America's shipped horses) to find them. Any track owner worth their salt is going to sell their thoroughbreds to met the demand eventers and jumping disciplines have for them

Much to the outrage of many horse racing enthusiasts, reports indicate that in 2002, Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners. He likely became either pet food or steaks for human consumption.**

      According to the President of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Alex Waldrop, an estimated 7,500 thoroughbreds are slaughtered for human consumption every year. As a former congressional staffer who amended the legislation on prohibiting slaughter of horses, donkeys and burros in the United States, that sounds about right.

      The horses race as long as you want them to. Tiznow won the BC Classic 3 times, Zenyatta ran in it twice…

    Does it make a difference to how many horses are bred with a winning horse? Would the offspring of a horse that had been bred less be worth more?

      It really doesn't. You have horses that haven't had a chance to do a Grade/Group 1, 2, or 3 race but have had successful careers, and you have busts like the Green Monkey.

      Use your brains - if you have a stud horse bred to ten mares because that is all that want his services, or one that is bred to 165 mares because that's the number of owners who want his get, which horse has a greater chance at producing a top flight runner? The one that only gets ten mares or the one with 165 chances at it?

      I am lucky to own a great grandson of the amazing Secretariat. I bought him 10 yrs ago as a 4yo off the track. He never took to the racing industry, thankfully. He is my pride & joy ❤️

      @@walelu777 His sons weren't successful but his grandson Storm Cat is the most one of the most prolific stud horse of all time, so his later lines have been extremely productive.

    Bottom line as always, it's a MONEY game - Money goes to money. Yes, there are those few gems that are gotten relatively cheap, but overall, MONEY= BREEDING and that's what sells, BREEDING/BLOODLINE.

      This man has been handling the yearlings for decades. Just recently, a white woman has been added to the handling staff. Handling these young horses is an important job and the ringman is highly respected...and well-paid.

      Those "black guys" are extremely good at what they do, which is why they are the ones doing it. There is also a black gal at some of the sales. But they do the job they do because they are the best in the business - and escorting TBs in the sales ring is NOT an easy job. I am sure they are very well compensated for their efforts.

    Why don't they require a percentage of the sales of these horses to care for the vast majority that won't make it in racing or break down, thoroughbreds can be retrained for other things but it is hard because they are so high strung....it is a sick industry...but the vast wealth involved should ensure they are ALL taken care of rather than sent to slaughter, which is what happens to very many....

      There are several funds set up for the very reason you state. One is named for Ferdinand, a Kentucky Derby winner who was slaughtered for dog food in Japan.

      Most stallions end up at a retirement farm. They are treated like royalty. Every industry has bad apples. Not all people who race are bad. And yes id know I worked with racehorses.

      @@Tyson-co4oc Yeah, MOST BREEDING STALLIONS, what I am talking about is the vast numbers that are bred for the hopes of being a good racehorse in the first couple years of there life, these are the ones that are most vulnerable. Thoroughbreds are a hot breed and they require a lot of experience, generally, if they don't make it as a racehorse, so they end up in the worst of situations oftentimes.

    They said those horses are diamonds but when those horses can’t make any more money for their owners or become old to race usually those diamonds call horses finish in a slaughterhouse Race always involved cruelty always for those people horses are just money makers machines .

    So sad watching this program that its all about the people and nothing about the horse. The people even take the win when they weren't running. So sad that there only use for these horses is winning money for people and then ending up in the slaughter pipeline. Disgusting. As far as I'm concerned its animal abuse and animal cruelty.

      In the actual reality of it though, the horses are the rockstars. No one remembers the name of jockeys who win, they remember the horses. Horses get movies made about them, not the people.

      I'm guessing you're talking about the 5:24 horse? Saddlebreds are gaited horses. They're bred to trot with motion. Even the foals already move similar. Stop assuming things.

      That was a Saddlebred, not a TWH. Saddlebreds are not sored and move the way they do because of their conformation. They are bred for it.
