@lightworks - It's not the length of time, it's the quality of the collection and how personal it is to you. Your collection is just as valid. I have been collecting since I was 17. I am now 52. I have (circa) 100 pieces. I bought from artists 20 years ago and I buy their work now. The relationship is good because I believed in them then and I belive in them now. You don't need to be a multi-millionaire to collect art, but when I heard her say Art Basel; even I knew she was on another level. Keep collecting and my advice is to look everywhere: graduate art shows, thrift shops, galleries, make appointments to visit artists studios so you have one on one time. Let their work marinade in your mind, don't be too quick to buy. I do all of that. Look at a piece and think: Do I want to see this piece in 10 years? If the answer is no but you can flip a thrift store find, do it. I found a 2/100 in a thrift shop 2 weeks ago - photography. With the original artist label and email. I will flip that and invest in something I really want. That was a £2 purchase.
