Ragnar was a Viking warrior and a farmer, who was interested in exploring. The show basically follow him and his family, his wife, his sons and their quest for gold, knowledge and fertile land to farm. England is what it is today, because the vikings came raiding, eventually settling down and, in some cases, converting to the Christian god.
Fun fact, they actually follow the legend closely on the show, Ragnar died by being thrown in a pit of snakes. Before he died he uttered the words "how the little piggies will grunt, when they hear how the old boar suffered", meaning 'how my sons will cry out in rage when they hear how their father was tortured'. He knew his sons would extract some vengeance on the English for his murder, and oh, boy, did they ever, with the largest Scandinavian army known to mankind, they sailed to England and attacked with horrendous fury.
And the baby he seemed to about to behead was baby ivar when he tried to kill him cuz his disability/ not being able to walk. Which he's able to do eventually but its hard for him cuz he's not really boneless like they call him he's constantly breaking them thts his problem
