  • Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do revolutionized the world of martial arts. By incorporating fencing style foot work into bare knuckle boxing, the style is as flashy as it is powerful. Today, we take a look at some concepts I learned while visiting ‪@jkdcolorado‬

JKD Lead hand= Bladed stance, 3/4 or vertical fist, 'Hammer Principle' ( from fencing, move the hand first, dropping towards target,) Explosive fencing like burst of rear leg, Upper body twirl (Jack Dempsey,) fist lands before the lead foot hits the ground (Jack Dempsey, ) hit with bottom three Knuckles (Jack Dempsey.) These are all the components that make a JKD lead hand powerful. Bruce incorporated Boxing, fencing and specific things form Jack Dempsey into this punch.

Lee was a fan of Jack Dempsey's work. His straight lead was also heavily inspired by the way Dempsey throw his jab with the falling step ( jab with your body weight behind it). The way you throw with the rear hand with the rear leg step forward is called trigger step, basically to increase the range of your rear punch.
There's another concept that you left out is the High Low concept. Basically if i attack with the lead hand (eye poke, straight lead) then the follow up won't be the rear hand (most of the time) but the lead leg instead with side kick to the leg or front snap kick to the balls (in self defense) or push kick (if i'm doing combat sport). Of course there's another combination to use the rear hand is jab/eye poke to create flinch reaction and used passing step to switch side, get close and barrage them with hooks and uppercuts

Great breakdown. Although from my JKD instructor Ted LucayLucay, he also was more on the western boxing side. So yea you'd do the JKD style footwork to get the distance then if you saw the opening do a combo like lead hand hook, hook, rear cross or what ever and then step back out if you wanted.
The point of all the flexibility principles like "no way as way" is to use what works for you. To be tactical, use strategy. From the most practical like if you are tall with long arms and/or legs then you can use that reach advantage if it works for you. If you are short and/or with short arms then it will probably benefit you to get in on the inside a lot as you'll need to to connect with blows.
Then added the situation. If you are the tall guy in the situation, tactically you don't want the short guy to get on your inside.
Nothing says you can't be if you can't just stand there and be a full on brawler. If it works for you, you should use it. But have a lot awareness of what you are doing and knowing how to use the "tools".
Also other philosophy like "Box a wrestler, wrestle a boxer" and so on. With JKD, at least from my instructor (who learned from Dan Inosanto back when his school was in Torrance Calf) he had his own flavor on things. While we did learn Wing Chung, Kali (stick fighting), a mixture of Thai boxing, etc. (a good mix of probably what was the best of everything for the time), he pushed more Western boxing.
What really struck me when I started back in the 80's was how mental JKD was. A lot was about thinking, adapting, thinking things through.
I looked at and first took a traditional Korean MA (mixture of hands and feet) and there was really ZERO such conversation.
It was basically do as the master does. I (the master) will show you this technique. Although we did at least some sparing. But it was pretty regimented still.
This is where Bruce Lee shined. It took ownership of himself, of the martial arts he was learning. He supplemented everything with study and experimentation. This comes across in JKD (must vary a lot depending on the teacher though).

When your shoulder is turned against the opponent (3.19) your hit lands him before and he cannot even reach you if you are not dwarf or otherwise short hand (attacker most likely will hit in a box formation, if attacks) but you can. After the first punch comes the back hand. Try it. Basic Silat punch combo. Your first posture is perpendicular to opponent, 1st and 2nd punches comes from the body rotation.
