To note something that will no doubt be repeated. stiegler's commanding officer made it a point if he found out any of his pilots shot down a parachute, he would shoot them, himself. Stiegler considered the bomber, in it's condition, no better that a parachute in that moment.
16:40 - Charly did a full report to his officers. But they wanted them to keep shut, they feared that other groups in similar conditions could trust the enemy too much or even try to fly over the coastal guard defenceline of germany without company, believing that the AA-Gunners didnt shoot a plane that barely keeps up in the sky. There where a war after all. Franz Stigler did fly in formation with the pub. He knew very well that the AA-Gunners and Spotters are the best trained out there, and they could detect any sorts of planes out there. May the AA-Gunners saw the pub as an captured plane that tried to do an infiltration? Who really knows. So they didnt shoot because of Franz flying alongside them. Franz Stiglers commanding officer during the africa campaign, told him once: "If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself. You follow the rules of war in your own interest, not in the interest of your enemy. You fight by rules to preserve your own humanity." Those where the words that Franz stopped from firing at a defenceless, and crippled enemy that just wanted to fly home. This storys are of this kind, that keeps up the faith in humanity even in the darkest times of history. I want to recommend the book "A higher Call" from Adam Makos. It is about that story and give many backgroundstories around Franz and Charly. What happened before the war. What happened after the war. A great book.
Not only did Ye Olde Pub survive this event, it survived the war. Not only that, but it survived being scrapped. Last I knew, it was on display in Arizona.
Nice reaction guys. Yes, you definitely should do "Night Witches" (Animated Story Video), it always letting me tear up, thinking of these young women who were desperate to defend their country (especially the last part of it). It's too bad that Yarn Hub did not create more of these videos to Sabaton songs., they did such a good job with these animations. Lets hope that they do something like these again in the future.
If you're interested - please do "Night Witches" (the long version, with the animation story) - or "Defense of Moscow" - you'll love both of those too.
Nothing warms my heart like people reacting to Sabaton and taking an interest in history. I especially have a soft spot for Americans with their notoriously bad history education
but really, BF109 that guided that B-17 was not only a guidance, as storie have told they flew over atleast three german anti-air-nests, and they didnt fire because a 109 was already there, would be waste of ammo.
Hi, thank you. I had it a little while back but am still dealing with post-covid symptoms. It seems to be my new normal. Hope all is well for you in Germany.
Really love this group even more each time I see something from them.

This story is so emotional. Love it. You were a great man, Franz Stiegler!

Thank you. Thinking about showing him Night Witches.
I like the way you guys talked about it, after the video. Very calm and collected ! Greetings from Sweden.
i remember reading that in Europe and Africa the pilots would commonly check and were happy to see crew bail out after being shot down
[toung-in cheek] it was the name of the bomber! ofcourse you'd guide your pub home! DUH!
I am sure someone else said it better in the comments.
His flight instructor of WWI said, don't shoot at broken birds (basically)
Thank you for your heartfelt reaction..
