  • A French reacts to Sabaton - No Bullets Fly song on the Charlie Brown / Franz Stigler Incident. Following a successful air raid on the German city of Bremen, Charlie Brown's American B-17 bomber, ‘Ye Old Pub’, suffered severe damage. When German fighter ace, Franz Stigler, was ordered to shoot it down, he risked his life to escort the bomber to safety instead of attacking.

      Salut,
      - Final Solution:L'holocauste
      - Bismarck
      ;)

My favourite WW2 story - if you want to see more detail into it, there is a book called A Higher Call which follows both Charlie's and Franz's story in detail.
To answer some of the questions you had - If I recall correctly Franz realised that they arent shooting at him despite being in range and grew curious so he flew closer and noticed how damaged the plane is.
He found himself unable to shoot them as his flying instructor instilled strong ethics ("If I ever see you shooting at parachutes, I will shoot you myself" and such). In this case he saw the plane as such parashute and just couldnt do it. He originally tried to make them land and surrender which they refused - then he tried to escort them to Sweden which they also refused so he just took them across the Atlantic Wall - without him they could have never made it as the only reason they didnt get shot down was that the spotters thought that it is some sort of infiltration mission using damaged allied bomber (why else it would be escorted by a German plane afterall).
The whole story is incredible - very much worth the read.

Not sure if others have said it here but the main part of Stiglers thinking could be described by what his first commanding officer taught his pilots in north Africa. He told them "we figth to defeat the enemy plane, if I ever see you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will kill you myself". That is the part about honor in the song. And Stigler basically could not see a difference between this plane so badly damaged it could no longer fight and a parachute. But choosing to just not shoot was not enought because he knew the coast anti-air defense will surely kill them instead. So he flew formation with them over the coast to show the ground batteries to not fire - they recognize the shape of Bf109 and know that occasionally captured B-17 were used by Germany so they do not fire on the formation of the two.
I don't normally read war history books but after seeing this animated story and the accompanying Sabaton History video I decided to get the book A Higher Call by Adam Makos that describes this incident including life and training of both pilots. It is an excelent book and does much better job of explaining how Stigler got from his 1940 state of mind "kill as many Allies a possible" after loosing his brother to the 1943 state of mind where he could not bring himself to kill a defenseless B-17. And also how they found each other over 40 years later.

Great reaction as always! Maybe you have these on your list already but here are a couple of tips for other songs to react to.
"Bismarck" - About the ship. The official video version of the song is great.
"1916" - A great cover of the Motörhead song.
"The Price of a Mile" - About the Battle of Passchendale.
"Uprising" - About the Warsaw Uprising (there is a live version of this that the play in fron of 500k people in Poland but the official video is great too).
"Cliffs of Gallipoli" - About the Gallipoli campaign.
"The Last Stand" - About the Swiss Guard and the 1527 sack of Rome.
I also love the Carolus Rex album which is more of a concept album that follows Swedish military history from the Thirty Years War to the Great Northern War. Especially the 2020 live version from Gothenburg of the song "En Livstid I Krig" is really great. But all songs on that album are good in my opinion. The Thirty Years War also features France so would be interesting to hear your perspective on it.
Btw. have you thought about doing reactions to Sabaton History? Most of the Sabaton History episodes are really great.

Definitely a great video, but the timeline is a bit off...December 1943 was a bit before the Allies had real control of the skies over Germany...that did not happen until the latter part of 1944. Even in 1943, the US strategic campaign over Germany was still having very mixed results when they tried to reach into Germany too far. The raids on Bremen were still part of the same Pointblank bombing campaign that had targeted German aircraft production in the Schweinfurt-Regensburg missions, which continued until March 1944 when all the Allied bombers were dedicated to the transport campaign as a prelude to the Normandy invasion. After the success of the invasion and Normandy campaign, the bombers went back to the assault on Germany in September...but now they were escorted by P-51s with drop tanks for more range.

    • @ToonStory-fh4gn

Thanks for these remarks! I might have gone one step too far with the "total control in the airs". What I meaned was at this point Lufwaffe / AAR are still inflicting damages to the allies, but have lost any kind of initiative and at this point had to contain the allied raids. More important the momentum is forever lost for the Luftwaffe, they are completely outproduced. Totally agree with the failure of the bombing campaign, and its controversial nature (cf. "Bomber Harris")

    • @iKvetch558

@@ToonStory-fh4gn OK...yes, I agree that by December of 1943 the Luftwaffe was on the defensive and the Allies were taking the initiative both in the day and at night. I also agree that many aspects of Harris' night time area raids continue to be controversial to this day...but I would not agree that the Allied bomber campaign overall was a failure...it was just not often as successful as it has been portrayed. The biggest failure of the strategic bombing was probably that it never went after Germany's electrical generating capacity.

    • @ToonStory-fh4gn

@@iKvetch558 I've gone back over the main works I have at my disposal. I believe that historiography has evolved a great deal on these points, from "aerial bombardment broke down German resistance" to "aerial bombardment was a waste of resources and had counter-productive effects" (I'm caricaturing). Here's where I stand in my personal reflection:
      1) The primary objectives behind this campaign (break civilian morale, break industrial capacity) were unrealistic and in my opinion based on an overestimation of the capabilities of the air weapon still new at the time.
      2) The bombings inflicted definite damage but also had negative repercussions by radicalizing part of the population, and I'm not sure that in the end it paid for its cost.
      3) Now here's what I find really interesting: Germany had to mobilize a lot of resources to limit the scope of its bombing raids. Repairing factories, burying part of the military-industrial complex, bringing back part of the air force from the Eastern Front to protect home soil... What could Germany have done with these extra resources?
Don't hesitate to let me know your thougths on this! Anyway I'm delighted and grateful that you took some time to share your opinions with me :)

@@ToonStory-fh4gn I don't disagree about the reevaluation of the bombing campaign, but it has not really followed the same path on the British side as it has on the US. Yes, on the British side, the effectiveness of area bombing has been called into great question...but on the US side the reevaluation has been more about recognizing the civilian casualties that came from "precision" bombing that was never really all that precise.
