      Please do share, the most important thing that they can understand, is, especially if they are just starting out, anything with paint on where they are learning is better than grey. ANYTHING. Because every failure when you begin is so rich with potential learnings.

    I really appreciated this. It's refreshing to think you guys who are professionals and content creators have failures and put your pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us. I always appreciate seeing elements of work that people aren't happy with. It's relatable and better yet, I particularly like to here the why behind that.

    This hits close to home at the moment for me because I spent lots of time and planning over an army and it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to and so I decided to start them over with a different scheme and a different approach to the technical side of how I’ll paint the same models.

I just put a lot of work on a imperial fist captain, to then realise the yellow was crap, and got a little depressed about it. Well, this video helped me to get motivation again, and when i look at it now i dont feel so terrible anymore. This is a topic that we avoid in all aspects of life. We constantly see the end product of all these wonderful people and think that it comes easy. That is the thing we trick ourselves into believing when actually the end product is a result of a struggle not a simple walk in the park. I want to shout out to three awesome content creators. Sam Lenz, Miniac, and Vince, these three show us in their content that failure or mistakes are not the end result. We can correct mistakes or try again. You three have been a huge inspiration to me as I continue to improve. I have come a long way from 2 years ago and I want to say a sincere THANK YOU for your contributions to the community. In general, I am pretty against stripping something, just because you can usually paint over and just keep painting (unless you get a bad primer job, then you have to strip it). That being said, I try to avoid it. That also being said, sometimes you are right you can't avoid it.

Just grab something simple for an army or for joy and just paint. Even f you don't finish it,. Just paint. Painting anything will get it going again.

    Fantastic topic my friend!
    Unfortunately, all Painters have failures, and failure walks hand in hand with success.
    A great learning tool I guess, and one I practice, is to keep the failures to remind me of mistakes/wrong path/bad technique.
    Social media adds even more anxiety to the topic, again, unfortunately.
    Totally agree, Art is very much, a personal thing, akin to love.
    Both, take time to evolve/mature.
    Reference failure again, they are definitely a big part of every Painters learnings. Indeed, there are many images of unfinished/abandoned paintings by our friends the Old Masters.
    Odd you mention two projects on the go, equates to optimum performance, this is very true and certainly keeps the Painters Mind....sharp & focused.
    Unfortunately in today’s modern world, far too much is given to final results.
    Sadly, the process, hands on skill and hours of painstaking painting and the ensuing torment, is sadly not, focus of attention, publicly.
    Best wishes to you,
    Happy painting,
    Hugh. 👋👍🍻

    Nice video once again! Really like your content. I have a suggestion (unless you've done it already?). Maybe this is not a huge problem for GW fans anymore as their models are quite good casts nowadays (Finecast still exists though), but a comprehensive video how to deal with bad casts and really make it work could be cool. I've personally noticed I don't fail good casts too badly very often anymore, but the story is somewhat different with miniatures that aren't perfect. It's sometimes really demotivating to try your best (especially with comissions) and find out the details are undefined mush..

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a good suggestion, I will add it to the list, but I will tell you my real answer I try to pursue as much as humanly possible, just don't paint it. Honestly, there are way too many good models on the market to waste time with bad figures anymore. Nothing in a game (rules wise) will make me want to paint a bad miniature. At worst, I'll just convert something that is good into it.

    My biggest hobby failure recently was doing zenethial with ultramarines using Citadel Macragge Blue over the zenithial base. I had no end of trouble getting it to work, it just looked like rubbish on each and every attempt. I think that the zenitial prime was ok using grey, black and white Vallejo surface primers and an airbrush but when it came to airbrushing the Macragge blue it all went wrong. I tried to thin the GW Macragge blue with distilled water, with distilled water and W&Newton flow improver (3% to 97% water or so),, I tried to thin the Macragge Blue with Vallejo Matte Medium and it was hopeless the zenithial underneath was just getting covered up by the Macragge Blue. I reached out for help etc and there was little, Vince I think on a thread suggested that I use more transparent paints such as Vallejo Inks, maybe even FW Artists Inks, I tried them and they were better than Macragge Blue but they were just not the same ultramarine colour as Macragge Blue and I am a GW puritarian, I want the proper colours on my minis that GW recommend, at least for the base. So in the end I decided to give up, just prime white and then base coat in Macragge Blue and then maybe use different highlights on plane surfaces (not just the edge highlights) using also Fenrisian Grey, Calgar Blue etc maybe mix these up with Macragge Blue to get a nicer transition - wish me luck with these ideas as I still haven't tried them yet - I grabbed the ideas from some 'Eavy Metal painter who had one of those paint guides, it was just one screen shot with the paints he used pointing to the various parts of the ultramarine but it was enough for me to get new ideas on how to proceed. Lets just say that the tried and tested formula with Macragge Blue, nuln oil wash, calgar blue edge highlight and fenrisian grey grey highlight is fine but I want something mire. I hate just plain old Macragge blue on plane surfaces.
    Also Vince rattlecans do mask detail, GW don't tell you that on the sales pitch, excellent for vehicles and terrain though if you are pushed for time.

    Great video, and good points. I feel like the internet has made it even easier to "compare and despair" when it comes to failure. You see this effect on social media where people post the Highlight Reel/Greatest Hits of their life. Like you said, "it isn't real" because it doesn't reflect an accurate picture.
    I think you showing your flaws might be both cathartic in some ways for you, as well show that we are all human and make mistakes. It's real easy to put great artists on a pedestal and forget that even they, in all likelihood, have messed up or been upset about their work.

    I start worrying whenever I haven't failed in a long while because it means I'm not pushing my skill envelope hard enough to be increasing in skill. I view all my painting failures through this mental lens and it helps. However, I can also see how this attitude mostly helps with a person like me who is still learning technical skills and fundamentals. Once a person feels "trained" in all the methods they want to be I would imagine the attitude above would become less useful.

    The productivity of two simultaneous projects goes down without proper preparation... :-)
    Working on my Van Saar (the old Gary Morley sculpts), most of it was going great; but I had decided to do their weapons as olive drab polymer so I'd picked up a couple of Army Painter colours I thought would work well for it. I wasn't getting on with the paints themselves, and I couldn't get the colour/texture to look right - call it the hot mess stage...
    So I decided to put them on one side and work on some tanks instead.
    Unfortunately I put them on one side... of my spray booth... And didn't notice...
    Now I've got to work out how to get lots of nice beads of Vallejo grey primer out of the texture of their hair.
    Still, I was pretty happy with how the tanks came out :-)

    Great video. As Sergio Calvo always says, "We don't make mistakes, we just create information. If we don't like it, we just create different information."
    My most recent failure: I broke the ring finger off of my Lady of Chaos from CC and I have no idea where it went. My poor maimed lady will forever be without finger because I think trying to sculpt a replacement would look... interesting haha. Oops.
    Another aspect of painting that I've been struggling with is constant tip-dry while airbrushing. By constant, I mean I will clean the tip of dried paint and paint will dry on the tip again after 5-10 seconds of painting. Have you ever experienced this? My guesses are either issues with paint consistency or I've damaged the nozzle/airbrush component. I might order a new nozzle and see if that makes any difference. The reason I think the nozzle/other component may be an issue is that when I backflow air into the cup, small bubbles leak out of two areas of the business end of the airbrush (1. between the needle cap and nozzle cap & 2. between the nozzle cap and the cap).

    I had one model from GW Games Day 2005, I failed at. I took pictures from all angles, took notes on all errors, researched more, let the model sit on the shelf for a year, came up with an actual plan on how to do it right. and than paint stripped and redid the model. this time it turned out fine.

    Hi Vince.
    100% agree. Not every piece must be a masterpiece, not every mini must be a crystal brush winner. If you aim for it with every piece you do you probably go insane very quick. Im a tattooist, as you know and last 6 months been rough for me. I wanted to be better so much I forgot how to enjoy my job. I was stressing about every single piece. From a name, infinity symbol or any other. Forgot, that not every piece is a masterpiece. Few weeks ago I've watched some tattoo podcasts on YT and remembered why I do this shit. Miniature painting is my hobby, not a job, but moved to it bit too much because its 'simple' and relaxing time where I dont have to deal with smelly or moving people.
    The odd thing is. My best pieces like competition pieces or for books were done for free and usually without competition in mind. The same had with my weirdnob you liked couple years ago. The one with stars in the smoke. There was no stress involved and this ma best ever piece and even now cant push myself to that level.
    When I paint for competition I always hit the wall at some stage. I have no idea what to do next. Usually start another one but then I may never finish the one before.
    I dont post every single tattoo I ever did but I like to share my mini failures. There is no harm in that but thanks to insagram you can browse through and see your progress. The same thing with my sketchbooks. I have almost every single sketch I did just to see the change.
    Thanks for your time wasted reading this and take care. trollz.

    A question - when you're not satisifed with your work do you strip your mini or do you paint over it. I'm find it that whenever I'm not happy with my work I just strip it... which I'm trying to stop 'cos then I don't have any minis to compare myself too.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I almost never strip minis, I just paint over. Basically, barring a bad prime, I try to avoid stripping the mini. My best advice is always keep going and just push through, unless the piece is for competition, (and frankly even if it was), perfect isn't an option, it's not something we achieve, a painted miniature we learn from is always better than one sitting in a Purple Power bath.

  • @sysiphuspeart9012
    @sysiphuspeart9012 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a (dubiously) tangential question for you. How long should I spend reworking something before I give up and accept where my skills are at? How much do you think I should fail before I accept that I'm not at a level to execute whatever I'm attempting? Do you recommend continuing on with a piece that I know doesn't work? What's do you think is the best course of action? (if it has an effect on your answer - I'm not a gamer. I'm always aiming at display level - trying to work up the discipline to get to competition)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a tough question. It's something that I run into all the time. Let me give the theoretical answer. When you move into the learning zone, it's going to feel challenging and you might get it wrong, but you will ultimately feel like you aren't overwhelmed. If you're in a fear zone, then you're going to fail and not feel like you're learning anything.
      So let me make that real, if you're working on something and you start to feel like it's bad, put some more work into it and see where you end up. If you're moving forward then keep going, you're learning. If you're pushing ahead and you really don't feel like you're learning or making progress, then never feel bad about walking away. There have been plenty of things I've walked away from because I just felt like I wasn't ready. No shame in that at all.

      I think the answer is finish things. Push yourself to finish more (not everything, as I say, sometimes you have to set it aside), but you need to build the power through part. That final moment is when you can actually judge your work, see where you have opportunities and move on and grow.

    Failure for me is not finding the emotional effect that I was after. What is worse is not knowing the effect that i was after. Freedom is when the project tells you what it is supposed to be as you are working on it. Sounds impossible but it does happen if we keep looking at what we are creating and keep thinking about it. Of course that is the more creative approach and less clinical approach.
