    With some of my early armies that I painted, I used dry brushing with a small flat brush to do edge highlighting on hard edges, it seemed to work almost as well as what you showed using the side of a brush with wet flowing paint.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, a make-up brush will do the same, it's all about slow, careful application of that drybrush and making sure most paint is off.

    Vince, hey. Thank you! Finally I know how to do beautiful edge highlighting. I've hated the way GW does them and most people seem to emulate that. I am getting an army together and was thinking that since I will be using extremely matte paints I'd ask you about this idea for the highlights: slightly lighter black (the armor will be burnt and scorched black) with satin medium. It'd also give the edges a different sheen of real light.
    A while back I asked you about the real flame style fire and did more digging on YT. Found three fire tutorials, two from Muraljoe and one from Bob Ross. Mural's airbrush technique is easy to mimic with a brush as he creates the flames with white first. Was thinking of creating the bodies with a slightly thicker glaze to imitate the airbrush.
    On your last livecast you were asked about how to thicken glazes and at least Amsterdam makes a paint thickener for acrylics. That should work, right? It is mainly used for canvas painting to make sure the brush strokes are visible.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would assume that paint thickener would work, but it is normally for canvas, so I assume you would want VERY little of it. As to the black armor, I would say I am not sure, mixing finishes can often give a very strange look, you would probably be better with a soft glaze of a lighter color transitioning to the edge highlight.

  • @DreadQuinn

    Awesome video again! Another use for ink that I had not thought of. I seriously hate edge highlighting..lol..very monotonous work. I'm definitely going to try the inks and mixing them in with paint if the color transition is too abrupt. Thanks.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, they can be a great tool to get normal paint flowing well so you get a good clean line.

    Thanks for the video, Sir! I had a hobby friend "show me how to edge highlight" years ago, said it would take my painting to the next level! He gobbed up my model so badly that I stripped it and repainted it. Because of that, I've avoided the technique completely. After watching your video a couple of times, I see what was done incorrectly. I will probably go back and tweak my models!

    I know that every miniature is different but I was wondering what steps you go through generally in your mind when you paint. Eg: Do you go undercoat, zenithal, base coat, clean up errors etc. Just a general approach to painting would be a cool video. Unless of course you just totally do things in a random order every time :)

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never really used it, but I know many people swear by it. The panel liner is something I definitely want to play more with, I usually just use oil paint thinned down.

    • @Joetime90
      @Joetime90 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VinceVenturella Your white ink tip really helped and how you described the pressure on the brush. I'm already having a blast making progress on my Eldar jetbikes. The ink helps to flow the paint and shade it ever so slightly lighter.
      Yeah I found the Tamiya stuff really helpful, if you do try it be careful of dripping from the ferrule. Also lighter fluid helps clean the excess off the model I saw.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's absolutely another plan. In fact, I quite like the fade into the edge highlight It can be a good tactic to do a fat edge highlight, glaze it out, then redo a thin edge highlight. I have tried to be more zoomed in as the videos have progressed. :)

  • @edgarbaez516
    @edgarbaez516 ปีที่แล้ว

    What consistency should I look for when edge highlighting? I tried doing panel armor highlighting with mixed results. When using flow aid I found I was either using too much and ruining my paint my making it super flowy/liquid. Or too little and it smudged, m every once I awhile I’d get it just right and the paint would cleanly mark on the back of the hand, but I couldn’t find a good ratio to replicate for Citadel/Vallejo paints. Am I looking for the paint to run in the palette but still remain cohesive?
    Also do you use a dropper to add flow aid, or just grab a junky brush and slowly mix it in?
    Thanks again for all you’re wonderful content.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  ปีที่แล้ว

      I mix it in. The consistency varies. My answer is something like a layer that has been mixed with flow-aid and the excess liquid wicked out into a paper towel is your sweet spot, but it's practice as much as anything.

    • @edgarbaez516
      @edgarbaez516 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VinceVenturella Thanks, I had had another go at it today and I'm starting to hone in on it. I think I need to be more conservative when adding in the flow aid. That seemed to make the consistency more "consistent".

  • @printandplaygamer7134
    @printandplaygamer7134 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a new painter, trying to get smooth, narrow edge highlights on (at the moment) space marines. The sharp-cornered edges are easy, using the side of the brush as you demonstrate, but I'm struggling with the places where I have to use the tip of the brush. The problem is that the small brush holds a small amount of paint, which seems to dry quickly, making the consistency of the paint...inconsistent. As a result, it's nearly impossible to get smooth lines of even thickness from the tip of the brush. Thinning with water is imprecise and inconsistent, and the paint sometimes runs too fast or otherwise gets away from me. You mention using paint with good flow characteristics, but I need to use specific colors. I infer that I need to add something to the paint to make it work better, but I am not sure if what I need is a flow aid, to make it flow more smoothly from the brush, or a retardant, to extend the drying time, so I have longer working time before the paint dries on the brush. I watched your paint additives video (Hobby Cheating 135) as well, but I wasn't certain which additive is the right one for *this* use case. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for a great, informative channel, too!

    • @VinceVenturella

      You are looking for flow improver, you need this video here on painting sharp thin lines - th-cam.com/video/khaA0gNY-EU/w-d-xo.html&list=PLcdsbwBroEmD2fNEJhcju6PD7qRmoo04Y&index=140
      The key is also to use a larger brush with a good tip. People often think to do smaller lines, you need a smaller brush, but that impedes you for exactly the reason you say. A good sable brush with a sharp tip in a size 1 can do incredibly fine points and has a good size belly for paint to flow.

    @DroopNasty 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How would you recommend practicing painting a complete model in general? Just buy some cheap random models from other games? I don’t really feel like throwing money at GW for practice, I want to make those look really nice. I’d also like to avoid stripping.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, probably some cheap bulk figures from random other games that have hard armor edges and real places to practice. I think it's generally the best idea is to find something cheap and just do it over and over and over and over and over until it's second nature.

      SO make sure you're working with a wet palette. A sable brush will also help. You also want to make sure you aren't using too small of a brush, you want something like a size 1. You're really aiming for a middle layer type consistency. I have another video on this coming soon so stay tuned.

    Hey Vince, thanks a lot for another great video. I've watched all your hobby cheating videos since I started painting months ago. I was wondering if you could help me out in getting better at painting. I've made this mini www.coolminiornot.com/423748 trying all the stuff I've learned in your videos. My problem is that people tell me the contrast isn't high enough and that even tho the colors are placed "well" the mini looks plain and dull. Can you make a video or direct me somewhere where I can learn how to maximize contrast and how to create realistic highlights? I'm not a fan of GW style of edging everything but I find it hard to understand how light would work on my minis and the simple method of watching a light hit the mini doesn't seem to work too well for me, as I end up bathing the mini in highlights but have no clue what kind of gradient they should have. Thanks a lot and sorry for the long post, hopefully you'll find time to take a look :D Take care and keep up the amazing work

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So miniature painting itself is the exploration of light. The work on contrast and pushing highlights is one of the more challenging aspects of the hobby. My best advice is look at other painted versions of the miniatures outside of GW's Heavy Metal style, for most minis, even GW minis, you can find examples. Look at how they place the highlights on similar minis.
      My other advice would be to join us here in the PMP. It's our hobby community focused on taking your next step. We post a goal each month, show progress, ask questions, and then post for end of month review. Myself and two others then review all such pieces and offer advice and critique.
