The coil isn't limiting you in the cut. It is not necessary to spend money in this area. It is not necessary to change the carb either. The problem is in the semi-fixed jetting. Replace the nozzle assembly with part # 86-578-1. $4 part will allow you to actually lean this saw out. Gut the muffler. Delete the gasket and you'll end up with around .024-25 squish. Widen the exhaust port, raise slightly, and polish it up. You'll have a much stronger running saw than is shown here for $4.00 and a couple hours time.
@@MrAlternationI bought mine as well and using it bone stock it sadly doesn’t have enough torque for to fall 16inch logs like a 500i does, I need more torque!!!!
Just made the carb, coil and muffler mods you show: Now I have awesome performance in my old 590! with a 24" bar with power to spare!! Thanks so much! Great video and instructional advice!!
I probably won't get thru since this is an older video but looking thru the interweb I've come across where inside the carb there's a governing hole on the high jet which keeps th carb feeding in fuel so it won't lean out easily.. guess to protect it somehow.. but reading into it they plugged the hole with a tiny bit of JB weld and that helped lean out th saw... anywhoo always a pleasure to watch Tin Man.. God Bless n hope all is well.
This is Great! My 590 is two years old, but I've only recently been using it heavily. Suddenly, it's seems to be running better, and starting easier. I guess it finally broke in. For $300 dollars I paid for a new saw on Ebay. I couldn't be happier. It has good vibration cushioning, and I'm literally ripping beams out of white pine to use as a bridge, and cutting sugar maple for firewood. And I used to use sthil 440 for work. So easy to work on, but I haven't had to do anything to it.
Yeah, they take a longer time to break in, but start leaning out nice once they do - and pick up a lot of chain speed, but still keep the torque. He keeps talking muffler mod, but as I recall mine was an open can, and didn't need much of opening up, and was super easy to do. No welding or splitting required. I'd say just running that saw for a year, it would pick up a lot. I can't wait to see it ported though!!! Bet it will run awesome!
10% gain for bolt-on parts is pretty amazing actually. The muffler may be holding it back a bit in this configuration but will be holding it back a bunch once you open up the transfers and raise the exhaust port. That's my guess anyhow. I think you will have a very nice, lightweight farm & ranch saw when you are done. Great video TinMan! Thanks
This will definitely make a interesting build. Was curious as to what the bore and stroke is so I looked the specs up. The bore I figured was on the small side at 45mm the stroke on the other hand is a bit longer then I expected it to be at 37.2mm this thing should sing in the wood after raising the exhaust roof, intake port, and transfers. If a guy can even get his port tool in at it lol. Definitely looking forward to the porting videos on this saw.

I have had a few of these saws and will say they are so easy to work on. Also they have a bypass jet that will not let you lean them. You can order another non bypass jet and push it out , then push in another jet then lean it out. I used to have the part number for the carb part but you might find it out there.

I normally learn from your videos. What I learned from this one is that I made the best choice buying the CS620PW over the CS490 and at a cost difference of $200. The 620 is more saw with more power and longer 27" bar. It's entry pro and magnesium, too.
New to the channel and love it. I recently purchased a 590 and after breaking it in felling some small trees and helping a friend out with some good sized firewood (he for some reason thought a small cheap ass electric Kobalt from Lowes was enough) I'm very happy with the saw. The extra rpm in the cut with the carb was interesting though. I wonder if the bigger coil just puts out a stronger spark though and gives a more complete fuel burn? Maybe. Interesting. Like # 500 :)
With the stock coil 12,400 rpm was as lean as that saw would go. I almost had the h jet closed to get it there.
@@tinmanssaws Was that also true with the 620 carb on there? I didn't notice you mention trying to adjust the high on the carb after putting the 620 carb on? (but before putting the coil on) Not till you had put the coil on as well did I see you adjust the H to try and go higher but I might have missed it if you did.
