    Again, not a commentary on biracial/african american hair. Just the execution of trying to emulate human hair with doll hair. Evette is a display doll to me and i do not recommend her to anyone looking for hair play❤️

    Thank you VERY much for addressing this issue! I am a black Adult Collector, have a biracial daughter and I am still incredibly frustrated with Evette's hair. Sadly, I ruined her hair by brushing it, and have now had to wig-swap the doll as the wig was unsalvageable.

    Thanks for the info! She's so pretty, but I'm not too interested in dolls purely for display as I enjoy changing them and taking them out for photos. Evette will have to be a skip for me.

    Thank you for this video. As a curly haired teen, I would like to say that you are right. American girl has done a really poor job on this doll’s hair. I’ve seen what they have done with Caroline, and the same result happened with her. This is probably a sign that American Girl needs to step their game up and hire people with licenses to curly hairstyles/ actual curly hair and they know how to treat it. Thank you again ❤️

    I know you're not supposed to use hair products on AG dolls, but I use synthetic wig spray on their hair when it starts to feel dry, especially my Pleasant Comany dolls that are 25+ years old. I feel like it did soften Evettes hair, but when I used the AG hair pick through a small section of her hair, I instantly regretted it. It became so frizzy and I'm still not able to get it back to the way it was when I bought the doll. Now its just finger combing and wig spray when I style her hair and it's been OK so far. I haven't braided her hair, just clipped back or ponytails.

    Wide tooth comb and conditioner wash with Shea moisture conditioner. No joke. It works wonders with Evette's hair.
    You can play with her hair.

    My curly girls were a learning curve. I have to use doll wig conditioner on them, hot water, and mini rollers in order to restore their curls. My mom used to own a hair salon so that helps me a lot!

    Thank you for this. I was afraid that your conclusion was going to be what it is😢. I do love Evette, mostly because she is versatile time wise. I’m considering putting her hair in a bun and sewing it into place and just leaving it. Must say that I do love your Makena’s hair out of the twists and flat ironed. She’s the prettiest one I’ve seen.

    Thank you Kris for addressing this issue. I left a comment for help in your comment section myself, because I was so frustrated! This is what I ended up doing-first I used a low set hot iron on her hair and made it straight.( it was very wet and conditioned) Then, I had to cut off the ends because of the crispy dryness! I applied many vertical perm. curls using end papers to keep the ends perfect. Lastly, I carefully poured steaming hot water over her curls. She came out very pretty with shiney curls-looks a bit like Shirley Temple. I also realized there was no going back with her hair and I can never touch it again! But after the ordeal and new hairstyle, I too thought she did not look ethnically appropriate to fit her story. Definately, like you, I believe she needed to have a shade darker skin tone and maybe darker shade of hair-with Addy-like texture. ( just my opinion) Yes, AG needs to hear about customer's dissatisfaction with her hair, etc. Thanks again!😊

  • @lifebyaria
    @lifebyaria ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree! The hair is very hard to keep tame, but I have a kind of working process that controls the hair nicely! Here’s what I do: I only fix the parts that need to be fixed my spraying water and then wrapping it around a marker and take it out after 2 seconds. Then I just finger curl and that’s it! Just my little process😊

    Back when I was about to buy my first AG doll, I was having trouble deciding between Corinne and Evette. I chose Corinne in the end because I was worried Evette's hair might not be the easiest to care for. If I do get Evette at some point, I may just change her wig.

    Last July I got a beautiful wig off Etsy that is very similar to Evettes wig for a custom. The wig is much easier to work with and style. I plan on getting an evette doll and switching out her wig for the Etsy one.

    Evette is my favorite of the WBU dolls, though I don’t have her. I do wish she hadn’t been whitewashed, but regardless, she’s a very pretty doll. I definitely would make a point not to touch her hair. I do like that her hair looks messy, though, as not every person with curly hair has super defined curls.

    I haven't been in the American girl doll space since I was little, but since they were truly apart of me growing up I decided to stop by the community again. I appreciate this video so very much. I'm a biracial girl, and my hair is always kind of crazy. It's a mix of this dark brown and kind of a golden color, and yes, it is two different textures in some parts. My first Evette had a very thick wig. It seemed thicker than most. But her wig was very frizzy right out of the box and while I was able to fix it some with water it was bugging me since I saw other Evette’s on IG that seemed to have way nicer hair and weren’t as frizzy. She also had one eye slightly larger than the other and a leg that wouldn’t stand straight. I got a new Evette and her hair is much less frizzy and nicer looking, eyes are perfect and legs are good, but her wig isn’t as thick as my original but I still find it thicker than other AG dolls. It really seems to be hit and miss with her. But I have not really done anything with her hair since getting the new one. I kind of figured after the first one that the more you touch it the worse it gets so I have tried to nothing with the new one. She does have one strand near the front that out of the box was tangled and frizzy looking and it’s a weird shape too. I tried to tame it some but didn’t help much and her left side of her hair seems longer than the right which bugs me. Overtime the right side seems to be relaxing a bit and so her hair looks a bit more even in front now. But overall I have found I’m not enjoying her the way I thought I would. Even though I usually don’t style my dolls hair. They are mostly dressed and displayed but I have been afraid to even change her outfit because I worry the hair will get messy. Sometimes I think I maybe should have kept my original and worked with the hair as her hair seemed thicker and more even but her eye issue was bothering me too much lol. Sometimes though I look at pictures from the day I got my first Evette and even though her hair was frizzy she looked really pretty when I put her hair half up. Can’t get my original back now but overall I agree with your video. It sucks because she is a gorgeous doll but they really should have thought through her wig a lot more before making it.

    I can’t even imagine dealing with Evette’s hair. I haven’t been “in” to ag for a while but I remember I had this problem with my first doll Kanani. Her hair is very curly and with her being my first doll i was not prepared to deal with her hair and it’s VERY dry and frizzy now. With american girl being a company mainly aimed at little girls I feel like it’s their responsibility to produce dolls that children can easily play and style. Never thought about it this way until this video! This being said, if you have Kanani or have any experience with the doll please make a video for how to take care of her hair!!

    Definitely sad AG white washed her. In fact, I didn’t even realize she was biracial until I saw her parents in the book. Of course there are lighter biracial people but I know sooo many (including myself) who have that medium skin and dark curly hair with Evette’s curl pattern(s). Hoping AG fixes this problem with her hair and uses a better version of it in the future, with a doll who is darker.

    As someone with this exact curl pattern, even I think they should have gone a different route. Easy maintenance and restyling should be a high priority. Overall it gives the impression to the kids who play with this doll that curly hair is messy and fussy, which can be true but obviously styling a humans hair with this pattern is way easier…
