Best Levels Ever # 16

  • The sixteenth episode of Best Levels Ever.
    As a series progresses, it's inevitable (or at least should, in my opinion) that each installement will attempt to trump what came before it and provide a richer experience.
    Mario Kart is no stranger to this basic concept. After eight or so main games, the original Super Mario Kart looks very simple compared to the later games, including the designs of the courses.
    But that's not to say it's now a bad game by any means. I still hold many precious memories with it that I wouldn't exchange for the world, and deep down, it might actually still be my favourite of the bunch of those reasons.
    The tracks it has to offer might not seem much now, but one in particular brought me endless childish joy to my childhood...

    This track also featured in Mario Kart 7. The big jump was reworked into a glider section to make use of the new mechanics; it was possible to keep gliding all the way to the finish line by jumping off a newly-added jump, on the walls on the left. Always found it very satisfying!
    It was also possible to keep riding the walls on the side of the track. This paved the way for a cool expert shortcut, consisting of riding the wall from the start of the lap to about one-third of the way through. Even if the track's layout is not so special for the series' impressive standards, the little changes that were added ensures the layout remains basic yet memorable.

      @robichu3023 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually if you look close enough, the "newly added jump" is in super mario kart, so it's not new.

      @@robichu3023 You're right! How stupid of me, forgot about it LMAO -- I remember now that I largely ignored it when I played Super Mario Kart casually, I found it too awkward and risky to take compared to the remade version of the track.

      @@SirCorvid It's still good that the original version has it. Nintendo may have special cased away the Feather from that track since it would break said track too much, but they still injected shortcut fun into it, and disguised as a random irregularity that could be taken as a cool cosmetic trick, leftover or glitch, to boot. MK7 was clearly making good reference to it and could even encourage players to take the original more seriously.

    • @SirCorvid
      @SirCorvid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarbonRollerCaco That's true, the narrow landing makes it a good advanced shortcut. A shame that it's superseded. Hopping at the first set of zippers is far easier -- I distinctly remember it was one of the few cuts I could routinely perform in my casual play-through -- while also offering a greater reward. This method skips two corners of the track; try doing that with the intended version, and the off-road will nullify all the time gained.

    Putting banana peels and fake item boxes on speed boosts over pits was one of my favorite things to do so that the CPUs get stunned and are unable to boost over the pits, leaving them to fall down and waste even more time having to wait for Lakitu to pick them up.

    Really interesting video, this series is at its best when it’s half gushing and half just seeing why exactly it’s good, this one was great to see how such a simplistic main area can make or break a Mario kart track

    4:57 Mario Kart is already pretty much Wacky Races except every racer is Dick Dastardly. Drat and double drat!
    I get what you mean though, MK64 was my first and I absolutely adored the desert train track and all the trolling you can do with it despite how rubberbandy the AI is. We need a Mario Kart Maker where you can design your own tracks, because I'd put that train in every single one.

    If you jump a little to the left there's another jump ramp that you could use to go even farther, but it is risky since you can land offstage

    I played this game for the first time awhile back. Initially I didn't really like it (I'm in the crowd that's more familiar with the newer Mario Karts), but a little time and videos like this one have helped me to appreciate it more.
    Also this course probably has my favorite theme in the series. I could probably listen to it for hours on end.

    I like Super Mario Kart for a different reason. The basic CPU items and tight turns make it the most skill-oriented Mario Kart game I've ever played, and the small tracks are thrilling to speed through on 150cc (yes, actual mode when you beat 100cc). It's impossible to get a feather on Mario Circuit 2 or just about any Mario Circuit in the game. This is because each track type has a unique item probability set. The whole "jumping over the road" gimmick has been used in a *lot* of custom tracks, but it was pretty cool the first time I've seen it in vanilla SMK. Great video!

    In Super Mario Kart, all the CPUs mostly follow the same path throughout the track. At 5:20 you can see Koopa Troopa about to drive between the second and third speed boosts in that row. If you put down either a banana or green shell there right as you're about to speed up, you can trip up the higher-placing characters and cause them to fall behind. It's really cool!

    As someone who grew up on MKWii the Mario Circuit 2 jump still manages to fascinate me. It's the only large jump where you can see other racers below you and can actually be screwed over, which was only ever recaptured with the gliders of MK7. It was also on a SNES so something like that wasn't very high on the list of expected course gimmicks.

    Definitely one of the more interesting tracks in the first game, but there was something even better that I've seen on the Mario Circuit 2 track. You know how if you tail a CPU, they will drop items to get you off their back? Try making the CPU drop an item right before the jump. Dick Dastardly would be jealous.

    I also liked Mario Circuit 2's jump back in Super Mario Kart, to the point where I still feel like several tracks from Mario Kart: Super Circuit, including Cheese Land, Ribbon Road, and Riverside Park, all evoke those same kinds of nostalgic feelings for me, sometimes multiple times.
    By the way, if you're distracted by jangling keys, then I wonder what you would think of the Pokémon Klefki.

    That track is a NIGHTMARE in SRB2 Kart, you can easily get bumped into the lava, and if you're going fast, well, every jump sends you to lavaville
    1:59
    But in this, people are evil on purpose, with heavy players looking to bump players out of the jump. Absolute chaos

    Man I was hoping I would see my favorite "glitch" in the entire game.
    Drop a shell or a banana peel right in between the second and third double speed boost right in the CPU's path, and if a player runs over it, they'll not only miss the jump and have to go back around, sometimes their kart gets "broken" to the point where they don't get the double boost jump and have to keep going back around! I've found it works really only in the 100 CC cups, but it's SUPER hilarious if you get lucky with items you can send multiple CPUs karts into that cycle of not being able to make that jump so that the lower level racers can finish "in the money".
    The ultimate awesomeness is if you can manage to get 4 CPU players in that "fail cycle" so you can watch them try and over and over again and fail while still being in 4th place. It doesn't work often, but when it does, it's the funniest thing I've seen in just about any game ever lol.

    I've got an idea for your next creepy moments video: the Labyrinth level from Revenge of Shinobi. The music is frantic and tense, and it really does reflect the situation that Joe Musashi is in for that level. Deep within the heart of enemy territory, not knowing where each door could lead, and choosing any can get you dropped in the middle of enemy swarms waiting to kill you.
