I really wish Rare would come back for it. I love Retro's take on the series but i miss the variety in gameplay of the snes country trilogy. Retro's games are more action focused but in Rare's games you can feel the heart put into them.

I think Donkey Kong Country 3 is very underrated, I love the bartering system with the bears, hidden banana bird caves, the soundtrack on the SNES was so great it couldn’t be replicated on the GBA (which had its own unique soundtrack), and the open world to explore with the unique vehicles was awesome to explore especially when you found secret areas.
DK64 is a gem
And it has DK 1981 in it. So how does DK 1981 outrank DK64 when DK 1981 is IN DK64 and needs to be beaten in it? You literally get DK 1981 with DK64, plus the entirety of DK64.

DK64 was probably the first Donkey Kong game I played.
I played Donkey kong country and 64 for hours, it was my childhood game and still is.
A new 3D Donkey Kong game is long overdue, that and a remake of 64, love that game
I put in a request with a contact at nintendo a couple weeks ago to remaster/remake dk64 or at the very least add it to the n64 switch online catalog
DKC2 is easily my favorite; one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. Tropical Freeze and Donkey Kong 64 are also amazing games that aren't overwhelmingly far behind.

The best use of those konga drums was watching someone else more talented than me beat dark souls with them.
DKC2 has to be one of the best games of the franchise in my POV, surpassing even Tropical Freeze.
The trilogy in general is better than tropical freeze which has an amazing soundtrack and great level design but controls terribly especially with DK alone and no assist barrels
Tropical Freeze is not even that good, there is a clear bias because it's newer but DKC1 and 2 are far better games.

Perhaps the "clear bias"' is your nostalgia. I think Tropical Freeze is definitely the best and even Returns is better than the old Country trilogy.

Been a while since I played DKC2 but I don't remember being as elated playing it as I was when playing Tropical Freeze.
Every level was more inventive and different than anything I had seen from that series before.
Don't remember movement or jumping being problematic. I only remember that the game was a very decent challenge and every cleared stage felt like an actual accomplishment. That said, DKC2 wasn't an easy game either.
In the end, top 10 lists are opinionated pieces and there is no clear 'better game'. If you believe there is, I could see you being bothered by any list that does not happen to be the same as yours.
Some people here even believe DK64 should be first and that would never make it anywhere close to it in my list (although it does have the best final boss fight in the series).
Recency bias IS a thing but Tropical Freeze is 10 years old. Nostalgia bias definitely is also a thing, if not an even more powerful bias.
At last! DK 64 is not crapped on for once!
It was the biggest game for N64 and was fun. Today everyone complain about too much collectable but i say its game content.

Donkey Kong Country 2 > Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Thank you for including the 1994 Gameboy Donkey Kong in the list! That game is criminally underrated and a lot of fun. Of course, the levels get harder and trickier the further you progress, but once you have the right strategies and go through a lot of trial and error, you can beat the game without too much difficulty.

Lot of it I admit is nostalgia, but nothing can beat the fun of the OG trilogy. Not to mention the still beautiful graphics and the AMAZING soundtracks!
While some of these games are really difficult, they sure are a lot of fun
Especially DKC2 and DKC3
That's the aspect I don't like about Tropical Freeze (and actually newer games in general) that they tend to stay much easier and very forgiving. Having 4 hits with both kongs instead of losing one with a hit is insane

Love the alpine aesthetic of DKC3 and the soundtrack is gorgeous. Unless you're one of those people who despise Kiddy, I think it's as strong a title as any in the series.

Nintendo should remaster both DKC Returns & Yoshi's Wooly World with the DKCR 3D and Poochy & Yoshi's Wooly World content. In DKCR's case, it means making the already gorgeous game even more so in HD plus more control options like on 3DS

MojoPlays forgets that there was a Donkey Kong Racing game before Barrel Blast, but it got cancelled when Microsoft bought Rare
I played some Tropical Freeze to get ready for Mario Wonder. Freeze is a way better game than Wonder.

I'd love them to take another stab at the idea of racing with Animal Buddies.
Looking back, a really good use the Animal Buddies could have had in DK64 is for fast travel. Once you hit a button in certain areas at the "end" or high points of a worl, it activates crates in many areas, and you can use the animals to blaze through areas you've already been in to speed up the game a bit. Imagine being able to use Rambi or Expresso on land to tear around fast, or Engaurde simply to speed through the underwater areas....

IMO DKC Tropical freeze is the best 2d platformer game ever made and it’s by far my favorite DK game
Donkey Kong on the arcade literally kick started Nintendo as a video gaming juggernaut. Can't wait to play the GameBoy version because the surprising extra levels after beating the arcade port.

I am actually 100% on board with putting tropical freeze at number one. I would still probably put country 2 at number one myself but tropical freeze would make a very easy second place and it was so good that I’m not even upset at all about swapping them.
THANK YOU for giving the Retro games the love they deserve. Damn Retro is so good. They really are like our modern Rare...just wish we'd get Metroid Prime 4 some time before I die.

I love every DK game I’ve ever played, but man Tropical Freeze is so good.
I'll agree... Tropical Freeze is peak. As much of a masterclass as DKC2 is... DKCTF has smoother controls, more robust levels, and the soundtrack really is the pinnacle of the series.
I respectfully disagree, playing tropical freeze alone with just DK and no assist barrels is torture

I heard that there was a third Donkey Kong arcade game, but I never heard of Stanley the Exterminator. After learning about it, I can see why he is forgotten. Although, if Nintendo makes a new Super Smash Bros. game, it would be interesting if they included Stanley as one of those trophy battle items.
It's disappointing that you included the Donkey Kong Land series as one game. They were 3 separate games and should be counted as such.
I am extremely upset that Donkey Kong 64 never became a part of Rare Replay when a debuted on Xbox. I never finished that game, and I miss it.
Darn this reminded me again that Rare is now stuck maintaining a crappy pirate game.
I'd been waiting for a while but one week ago today I finally got myself a SNES copy of DKC2 and my freaking god its as good as I remember it, such an amazing game. Playing on an emulator just feels off.

for real. I played land 1 and land 2 back to back a few months ago and land 2 is _infinitely_ better and more polished. they're very different games of very different quality.

While a great game, Donkey Kong (1994) I don't think should have been included. In a lot of ways it is a precursor to the Mario Vs Donkey Kong series, If you are not going to include those then why this one. Mario Vs Donkey Kong is a like a spiritual remake of this game.

I'm happy to agree with your numbers 1 and 2. While getting towards the end of Tropical Freeze, I had to seriously consider if it was the best 2D platformer ever made, then thinking back pretty far, I decided that Super Mario World was still the best, but Tropical Freeze came pretty damn close!

Oh yeah. 100% agree. Only one DK game could top DKC2, it was an absolute masterpiece for its time. But Tropical Freeze was on point. Even the world map was an amazing callback to DKCR, and I love that attention to detail. And a solid final boss.

I don't know if it is nostalgia speaking, but I would say the original dkc trilogy has a unique charm newer games don't. Music in newer games must be always very upbeat, while the older ones were free to take their time like in stickerbush simphony

To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the Donkey Kong games. I don’t like how absurdly difficult they are. I hope the next game is easier, and I mean A LOT easier
