Exact same thing here. But her enthusiasm and the details and history she provides adds so much texture and context to the topic that I can't help but be interested. It's almost infectious.
Things are well-explained, kept relatively simple, and presented with both seriousness and a lighthearted touch at times to keep it from getting too bogged down with serious topics. Between Dami and Fred from The B1M, I could listen to discussions about architecture for hours at a time.
One of my favourite shots in the movie is when the Bene Gesserit nuns arrive to watch Feyd Rautha's fight, and as they walk from the interior light (normal) to the exterior (infrared) their cloaks change from black to white. It's such a subtle transition I didn't even clock what was happening until subsequent viewings but it's SO GOOD.

Hi Dami. I'm currently doing a PhD in the use of Brutalist Architecture in Science Fiction. Brutalism has such a fascinating relationship with sci-fi, both visually and thematically. Your videos are an amazing source of ideas. So thank you, and if you have any other resources, ideas, or references that could help me explore this topic even further, I'd love to see them.
If you want additional ideas for your research, checkout the old sci-fi series Lexx if you don't already know about it. I don't know much about the academic side of architecture but I think that particular sci-fi series could fit your curiosity about visual and thematic Brutalism within Science Fiction. Hope it helps, good luck with your PhD!
These videos drawing parallels between fiction, architecture and history are difficult to make and you guys absolutely nail it. Very well written, neatly filmed and cleanly edited. I keep showing this channel to more and more people and you keep justifying it. Keep up the great work!
FWIW Giger designed the visuals for the Harkonnen for Jorodowski's failed Dune film. I felt the use of similar visuals in the recent films to be a nod to that work, as it was very on point.
I absolutely love Dune, and because of this video, I'm even more obsessed with its architecture. The connection between architecture and the psyche was amazing. Hats off to you!
Kudos on the scale model of the arena! It really brings it's massive size into perspective. At first I thought the head emerging from the liquid was a shot from the movie. Well done!
Odd, most of the people i have met obsessed with Herbert's work absolutely hated this film. Sure it looked pretty and "artsy" but nothing about part two was faithful to the book, hate to see how bad he's gonna butcher Dune Messiah next. So far the only faithful adaptation (as much as people #### on it for its low budget and corny acting) was the mini series. At least it tried to follow things word for word.
@@nikushim6665 It has 8.5 in IMDB and 92% in RT and made bank at the box office, everyone loved it. The fact that it changed some things from the book, doesn't automatically make it a bad movie. The book is the book and the movie is the movie
Honestly I would say Geidi Prime in new Dune movies is the best visual of the century so far. The elements of Nazzi's architecture with Giger-esk finish and color scheme is chilling like a horror movie even without a single visible drop of blood.
It's so interesting to hear you speak german. For my foreign ears you don't have much of an accent when speaking english, but you do have a very distinct asian accent when speaking german. Kudos for the very detailed pronounciation in any case.
This video is a home run for me, please make more. I like the psychology of architecture especially. There's a lot to say about movies ,pop culture images and architecture. What we see where we live and who we become. ❤
This is so weird.. I finished the book on Monday, watched the second movie yesterday and searched up dozens of discussion threads on the Giedi Prime scenes during work today. And I return home and I see this video from you, who I discovered a month ago, pop up on my feed. Surreal.
Oh wow, this comment to confirming something I really truly believe. I can't prove it as fact, I don't have enough data to draw definite conclusions, but it seriously seems to point in the direction of my hypothesis!
the black sun was such an evocative artistic decision! very cool and shocking to the audience! It helps make Geidi seem even more alien and hostile than Arakis
12:43 not to mention, if I'm not mistaken, the triangle is the strongest shape with the fewest amount of lines. It's effective, strong, calculated. Something the Harkonnen are way too good at. I might read a bit too much into it, but thought it was an interesting thing
*cough* Hexagons are the bestagons. But in all seriousness, 'best' shape depends on what you are using it for. Spheres are best for pressure related stuff, while triangles are going to be the simplest shape to fill volume. But it certainly made an amazing arena, way more interesting than anything with more sides and shallower corners, that would feel to 'fair' for the Harkonnen.
I never thought about the noise in the colosseum, for the fighters it must sound like they're fighting in hell itself, a barrage of screams and shouts all blurred out by eachother, voices made of gunpowder, demon handlers inching just outside your peripheral, god what a good movie
The Dune book series is so rich, in so many areas, that it is possible to make countless episodes, explaining countless of these things, in thousands of areas of knowledge. I would like to see this project continue. Keep up the good work Dami and "may NOT thy knife chip and shatter"
What an absolutely excellent video. Covers great sci Fi, history, historical fiction, psychology, architecture, and the intersections of all of them. Top tier content
I study Worldbuilding for both academic and writing purposes, and Dune has been always held as one of the major cases in science-fiction. Its cohesiness allow future developments in other forms of expressions and artists - not only fanfiction or oficial writers - that build their own versions on such well-layered foundations and give the next solid step for even further developments and speculations. What this video shows and its own conclusions is a proof of that. Thanks, awesome material, I'll recommend.
Can I ask you something? What do you think about the world building in Brandon Sandersons Mistborne series? I feel it's seriously underrated and when I finished the books I felt like I just finished LOTR for the first time.
@@Omni0404 not OP but for me I give it credit for being very different from standard fantasy and interesting, but it's not THAT rich (the mgic systems allow for cool action scenes, but the world being an oppressive monoculture makes the worldbuilding fairly stripped down, even with the kandra and the terris to spice things up. All in all Mistborn is all about having a brisk, satisfying plot. That said I'll recommand the way of kings by the same author, which has much more vibrant worldbuilding.
@@maximeteppe7627 Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination. ✊ Edit: I believe all of Sanderson's works are considered to be the same universe. There's already a lot of cross pollination between them.
When it comes to Worldbuilding, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is very good. And he describes dome of the architecture in different cities of that world, too. It's easy to picture and to "feel" the differences that it has on psychology of different cultures in that world. And the masters of Worlbuilding are Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont. The world in their "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series is so rich and varied it's mindblowing!
9:23 As a 3d printing pro I have to correct you here (I know it might been the ad script) the problem with the layers on the top of curved surfaces is not resolved by a smaller nozzle, a Smaller nozzle gives you more resolution in the XY plane, for when you have small walls or details in your model, details observed from a top-down view (not sideways), the layers on top of curved surfaces can be minimized by reducing the layer height from the standard 0.2mm to .08mm (this usually augments the printing time if you print the whole model with this reduced layer height) Bambu Studios, Prusa Slices and basically every other slicer gives you the option to have dynamic layer heights, so you can print your model fast at 0.2 or even 0.25 layers and then change to 0.08 in the top curved surfaces.
in this case I think my solution would have been to print on the side, making the curve happen on the XY plane. there are only blocky ribs on the z plane, so if you rotate the whole thing, the only issue is potentially having to add and then remove supports between the ribs
I've watched the first movie too many times to count, due in large part to the sheer grandeur of the cinematography, sound design and world building. There are so many details within each society that are perfect for you to explore on this channel! Thank you for showing us so many historical and scientific "easter eggs" that I missed. You never cease to educate and entertain.
Same here. A lot of details almost require multiple viewings to notice or take in, and no matter how many times I've seen it I still see something new every time. I'm glad it's such a good movie, and that he's so skilled, because that combines to make it a real pleasure to watch, no matter how many times.
Glad some people appreciate the mastery of the Dune movies. I'm so tired of the haters saying Lynch's version is better and using brainrot words to describe it like "trash" and "its mid" and "that's cap" 🤦♂️ It's a beautiful movie. Everything from aesthetics, the story telling, the world building is skilfully composed. I love the mysticism of the first movie and the simmering tension of the second. Villeneuve deserves the accolades for Dune.
As I can see said in a lot of comments here, I can't stress how much you are reaching a Non-Formally educated yet highly interested demographic. I am a grossly uneducated 40-year-old from the deep South who always struggled in school yet found his passion for learning in his thirties. Your channel has been a great source of entertainment information and thought processes that would not have been introduced to me and others and I just want to express my appreciation for you and your team.
15:15 Hey Dami. Here's something you might find interesting. Images with "warm" or "cool" tones don't evoke this sense of warmth or cold in me and I notice it in my peers who are also from tropical countries where there is no perceptible colour change across the seasons. To us it's just more blue and more red/orange. So I think there's definitely some psychology involved somewhere in there.
"Pracht" translates to "Splendor" . Very interesting video as someone who read all the books, seen all the movies and still lives in Germany. Thanks for all the research.
Your logic & flow of thought is simply fascinating, if not more than the information you thread together. Definitely on my list of people I’d like to have long conversations with to pick their brains.
I really regret not watching this movie in theatres just for this scene allone. It really stuck with me. Also, I am astonished about the level of detail that wwent into the design and what it all implied. That's why I love your channel, it's so fun to learn these things!
This video _really_ exemplifies the dilemma I find myself caught upon whenever a new DamiLee offering appears: do I satisfy my urge to watch it immediately, on whatever screen is most readily accessible (usually an iPhone), or do I resist this urge, so as to enjoy it unspoiled in its proper environment, on a large, high-resolution, colour-corrected screen? You and your people are really becoming very, very, good at this…
To be fair, we don’t know what other stars are out there. After all deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense, but the real universe is always one step beyond logic
Geidi Primes sun is not Black. The atmospheric pollution and active terraforming efforts to combat the pollution have "stained" the sky. Light passes through all the exotic chemicals and pollutants, that 100% reduce the span of your life, dramatically, filters it into weird ranges and spectrums for ALTERED human perception. The atmosphere of the living areas is 100% laced with chemicals and narcotics. Your perceptions are altered on Geidi Prime, along with your body. Chemically and in the vast majority of cases surgically. Harkonen citizens have a number of artificial implants in them that allow them to survive on Geidi Prime, to just exist there. Its a counter espionage tactic. Only those vetted and altered by the Harkonen can live there. Anyone that "snuck" onto the planet, cant see, cant hear, cant breath, eat, or sleep properly. All of it requires Harkonen intervention. This is the true and proper scale of Harkonen oppression.
@@Feefa99 yeah, those inky fireworks didn't make much sense to me either. But it looks cool so I quickly stopped trying to explain it to myself and just enjoyed the experience.
There's literally a star type called a "black dwarf", which is a white dwarf neutron star that has cooled off. But the lifetime of a white dwarf's heat dissipation outlasts to the death of the universe, so Giedi's star is unlikely a black dwarf yet, even though it's 20,000 years in the future. Giedi's star most likely is a white dwarf. Another interesting fact, if the star is a white dwarf, it also means it's a super nova remnant, meaning Giedi Prime long ago was caught in the blast, which scoured all possible life and impregnated the surface with heavy metals, which would be the likely industry Giedi Prime was colonised by the Harkonnens for.
Eagerly waiting for this one! My favourite movie would love to have a deep dive into the architectures & psychology of it all❤ & who better than dami to guide us through it ❤❤❤
Just wait for messiah then, they really go into the nazi imagery especially when Paul compares himself to Genghis Kahn and Hitler especially since trillions were killed, and 90 planets sterilized. And you also have Muad’Dib’s palace being absolutely huge, and the throne room causes a forced perspective that makes Paul look so much bigger than he actually is. And the only other building that comes close to size of Muad’Dib’s palace is the temple of St. Alia of the knife
Hey, writing this comment to express how motivated and inspired you guys make me with your videos. Such deep dives are absolutely kicking it in every direction, cuz they focus both on writing, on tech, on scifi, on architecture and many more! This one in particular has hit me hard, because Giedi Prime in this Dune was something that gives me chills to this day
Absolutely love your videos. must have watched every single one of them, so educational and very insightful. Please keep them coming. Dune is certainly one of my all time favorite stories in modern Science Fiction films and books. Greetings from, The City of Angels (LA)"
Great video, and I get that it's a casual aside, but the notion that the Greeks had to go to nature because they were starting architecture de novo is wrong and plays into a certain type of European chauvinism. The Archaic period, when we start to see what we think of Greek architecture, only starts in 800 BCE. All sorts of people have developed sophisticated architecture in the Mediterranean basin before then, with the Greeks clearly having a familiarity with the monumental styles of North Africa, the Levant and West Asia, as well as the older cultures of the Peloponnese itself. EDIT : Would love to see a video from you on bronze age architecture!
I just love how just grok everything about the movie. I read the book when I was a young man, back in the 70's and was fascinated by imagery. Thanks for making such a great video.
The absolute BEST thing about this channel is that it uses the same visual concepts to teach you about the visual concepts it’s discussing. The amount of extra work required to pull this off cannot be understated…. We’re talking 10s of manpower-hours for just single shots and sequences. This makes EVERY video an absolute joy of education and entertainment!!! This is premium TH-cam folks, and I’m fucking here for it!!! Big shoutout to all the team behind the scenes dealing everyday with phone calls like “hey, did you pick up the oil for the oil bath sequence? What’s the ETA on getting the 3D printed models to work? Did you get my notes on the script? Did we figure out what went wrong with the overnight render? Etc… You guys do such high quality work, that you make it look like you have a team 20+ people!
YESS thank you for this recognizing this!!! For that particular oil sequence, it went something like "let's try to scan Dami's head and make her bald" **tries and fails** "what substance can we use for black oil that can also wash off easily?" **tries with linseed oil, lube, shampoo, detergent, with food colouring.** "but how can we keep the head submerged against the buoyancy of the liquid?" **modifies the 3d print head and prints the handle to keep head down** "what kind of bucket can we use for a clean shot?" so on and so forth... 😆
@@DamiLeeArch - That extra effort is great, but why do you mispronounce words, like at 6:15 th-cam.com/video/P3lkZ-7pRAM/w-d-xo.html where you say "longetivity"? I mean, you sound like a native English speaker who should know that is _not a word._ Does somebody else write your scripts, so that you come upon certain words unprepared? Because IF you write your own scripts, it is a double mystery that you mispronounce "longevity," turning a four-syllable word into FIVE syllables.
I freaking LOVED Dune! And you breakdown of Giedi Prime just nails the bleakness of the Harkonnen mentality. Thank you for this as well as your whole channel. Excellent work! 👍
The algorithm put your video in my feed a couple days ago and I saved it to watch later and just getting around to watching it now And boy am I glad I did so. Great video!
Yes. I love It. I'm Sixty Five years of age and I remember reading the book back in school.. they had placed me in a Remedial Reading class.. I watched as certain other students were trying to read Dick & Jane... BORED, I looked around and saw a book shelf with new paperbacks on it. I asked the teacher if I could read one. She said yes. I picked up DUNE... [Yeah; I shouldn't have been in that class..] I was also introduced to "Stranger In A Strange Land" "Martian Chronicles" and others.. .. My little complaint with the newest remake Is that it smothers the metaphysical aspects of the story. Making it somewhat mondaine. But I understand that 'Is' the difficulty in bringing the story to the Big Screen. And I [So...] wanted to see the Space Navigators! And watch the 'Folding of Space' as they go from world to world.. .. You Did Great with your interpretation and work!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾 Keep Going! I'll watch..🖖🏾💕
the older David Lynch film tries to have the meta-physical parts, but it seems to be an acquired taste. I like it, but some don't. Feyd is Sting! Jose Ferrer is The Emperor, Patrick Stewart is Gurney Halleck It's oddly awesome

Dami, you are my queen and I will build you anything you ask 😭 thank you for the dune content!!! I feel like there is soooo many fun architecture marvels to review in the dune universe. The Arakeen Palace 😍
Yeah, Muad’Dib’s palace would make the volkshallen look like a run down shack. Hell, I bet Hitler never thought to design his seat of power to have a forced perspective that makes him seem bigger than the average person
I must say, that sponsorship integration was really natural. It actually shows us the results you can get from the product, so it interested me even though I had no plans to get a 3d printer.
Obsessed with dune. Even got the boardgame. Also compliments to the camera operator and editor. This video looked sick and I really liked the fun upbeat music for the end timelapse. It's like an energy giver to make you hyped for whatever you watch next.
You could almost argue the movie made Feyd exist. He's rather a footnote character that shows up at the very beginning and the utmost end to no great effect in the books.
Holy crap! This blew me away! I clicked on this expecting a quick, possibly vapid overview of a planet and culture in a movie I have not watched yet. What DamiLee delivered was an insightful, clever, historically linked, intelligent and entertaining class on things I now wish I knew more about. Miss Lee you have a new fan. I look forward to more videos like this.
Another banger! Love your work, Dami. Anyone else remember when this channel seemed like a pandemic pivot? And now it's got some of the (if not THE) best production values of any channel I follow on TH-cam.
I love everything about this. Such a beautifully choreographed video about such a beautiful film. And Giedi Prime, I wanted to see so much more of this planet. The ideology of the Harkonnen, a world of oppression and plastic, is such an interesting setting not seen in a lot of movies before.
I just wanna say thank you Damy for such interesting insights , facts, knowledge and a way of deliverance that is massively engaging. I love this channel

Your enthusiasm is inspiring! And yes, Dune is an awesome movie. I love how they went above and beyond to make awesome world building and cinematography.
The Geidi Prime sequence was one of the most powerful. They really made "planet psychopath" and generated a lot of feelings and more subtle story telling. Really appreciate these kinds of analyses where we see how each element adds to it.

In this video you got to appreciate just how much Dami covers Dune with so much enthusiasm and passion, I bet she loved going into the rabbit hole with this one! The outcome is a masterpiece.
I study literature and these types of analyses are what we need, and always needed. There's so much perspective out there that allows us to break free from dumb and simplistic criticisms of art like "oh I don't like that" "I like that" But why tho? And looking at Dune through the lens of architecture just adds more depth and appreciation for the film than some people give it credit for. And I know, as a fan of Dune myself🤣
Just got the SO hooked on watching these with me due to great knowledge and a blend of excellent storytelling and combining history, architecture, inspirations, science, and sci-fi. There's so much thought that goes into set design. People live in the fictional paces so it's really fascinating to see what's practical but also important to them so the environs tell the story of the people, their priorities, and their culture.
Well done! I freaking loved seeing the hand gestures of a full blooded human in living colour and the way black and white images and films were spliced around those beautiful, well-focused clips! Certainly the foundations of House Lee have been built using agricultural grade polyethylene drainage tubing and not ordinary weeping tile that is easily crushed.
Thanks for connecting the dots so simply for us all. My mates and I were talking about the same things in regards to architecture and history, advanced tech and biology.
Dune has captivated me since my teenage years, when I first delved into the books. The series presents a compelling blend of technological advancements, intricate political maneuvers, and complex social engineering, all within a retro-futuristic universe. What truly intrigues me is the idea of 'human computers'-trained individuals who perform extraordinary mental feats to control sophisticated machinery in a society that has banned artificial intelligence. This unique approach not only shapes the story’s conflicts but also raises profound questions about humanity’s relationship with technology and power.
Yes!!! If you’re talking about the mentats I also love how they’re characterized in the books.. and how they are in the end humans with weaknesses that can be exploited..

It's so interesting to hear you speak german. For my foreign ears you don't have much of an accent when speaking english, but you do have a very distinct asian accent when speaking german. Kudos for the very detailed pronounciation in any case.
Dami x Dune, the crossover the world needs during these trying times.

I like the psychology of architecture especially.
There's a lot to say about movies ,pop culture images and architecture.
What we see where we live and who we become.

Speaking of home runs, the CINCINNATI REDS are quite the ball team. Thanks for engaging.
Bruh, this channel and this lady are going places... Crazy edit, wonderful writing, amazing music! It's one of my favorite channels for sure!
This is so weird.. I finished the book on Monday, watched the second movie yesterday and searched up dozens of discussion threads on the Giedi Prime scenes during work today. And I return home and I see this video from you, who I discovered a month ago, pop up on my feed.

Love this!
@@dwolvin what are hexagons if not a bunch of triangles 👀
“The Greeks laid the foundation…Ha ha” 🤣 Architecture humor ❤
They just copied what came from long before and was lost to the Atlantic.
Also made me think of the Asimov Foundation series, which while perhaps not as influential as Dune is a force of its own.
@@Peavey311 Psychohistorians and Bene Jeserit have similar designs on the future. And then there is a collateral damage on the way there.

Edit: I believe all of Sanderson's works are considered to be the same universe. There's already a lot of cross pollination between them.
what are your other favourites?
When it comes to Worldbuilding, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is very good. And he describes dome of the architecture in different cities of that world, too. It's easy to picture and to "feel" the differences that it has on psychology of different cultures in that world.
And the masters of Worlbuilding are Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont. The world in their "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series is so rich and varied it's mindblowing!
9:23 As a 3d printing pro I have to correct you here (I know it might been the ad script) the problem with the layers on the top of curved surfaces is not resolved by a smaller nozzle, a Smaller nozzle gives you more resolution in the XY plane, for when you have small walls or details in your model, details observed from a top-down view (not sideways), the layers on top of curved surfaces can be minimized by reducing the layer height from the standard 0.2mm to .08mm (this usually augments the printing time if you print the whole model with this reduced layer height) Bambu Studios, Prusa Slices and basically every other slicer gives you the option to have dynamic layer heights, so you can print your model fast at 0.2 or even 0.25 layers and then change to 0.08 in the top curved surfaces.
in this case I think my solution would have been to print on the side, making the curve happen on the XY plane. there are only blocky ribs on the z plane, so if you rotate the whole thing, the only issue is potentially having to add and then remove supports between the ribs
we already used 0.1 layer height with a 0.2 nozzle for the curved part!
@@maximeteppe7627 that would create too many structural trees and make the print time much longer
@@JayzVeez The Lynch version of Dune is simply not Dune, period.
As I can see said in a lot of comments here, I can't stress how much you are reaching a Non-Formally educated yet highly interested demographic.

Not only the scene, the soundtrack makes it even more overwhelming.
You and your people are really becoming very, very, good at this…
Watch it twice 😊
I agree with @Flutterbyby 😎
While the black sun doesn't make much scientific sense it's still pretty cool idea. That's why I love good movies as visual medium.
@ that would make sense, personally I’d love to see how giedi prime looks after it falls under Atredies control
I think this is my favorite episode you have ever done...BRAVO !! such an amazing job you do.

Etc…
You guys do such high quality work, that you make it look like you have a team 20+ people!

The Geidi Prime sequence was one of the most powerful. They really made "planet psychopath" and generated a lot of feelings and more subtle story telling. Really appreciate these kinds of analyses where we see how each element adds to it.

Okay, you just managed to upgrade my appreciation for those movies even more. Thanks for the insights!
It doesn’t matter what I “thought” of Dune… you added a whole level and I’m going to rewatch it now! TY!
I am HERE for Dami and her slightly crazed smile as she pets her 3D printed Feyd-Rautha head... 😆
Without a doubt, this is the best YT channel I've seen.
Another engrossing and thought-provoking voyage into the confluence of architecture, culture, and science fiction. Great stuff!
