We pronounced it “Shermoolley” in the Forces as we used their parachute illumination flares in the early 1980’s. In fact the declaration on leaving the range often went “I have no live rounds or empty cases in my possession, nor any rockets in my pockets or Shermoollies on my ghoulies.” Everything after “possession” being ....unofficial.
It's always the Launches and Explosions that made a Gerry Anderson series great, and the company in question should be remembered for their contribution! #FabFacts
There were some books published in Japan that claimed these rockets were originally used for launching the ejection seat out of a fighter plane. I guess those books were incorrect.
Thunderbird 2 couldn't hold enough fuel to travel as far as it does. Nonetheless she's my fav. Am I missing something about it's design that allows it to heavy lift for hours?
@@timhiltonsuperstar Bristol / BAE investigated TB2 as to the usefulness of its designs, dont know what their conclusions were. It is Hercules C130ish in its way of working

Loved the story, Jeff Tracy would approve!
Any info on the little 'Jetex' rocket motors used on vehicles like FAB 1, and the SPV, to throw up road dust?

I always thought the used the same stuff that used to be in Standard Bangers that used to 'roar' once the blue touch paper had been lit
Good info,. And I really think they enjoyed making that one.
Schermuly is a well known name in military circles, rocket flares are known by that name but we pronounced it shermooly.
I had no idea! Thanks for sharing ...and have a Happy Anderson New Year! PS I love your work!👍👍
So they Were rescue flares I had thought that's what they might have been.
Tom Baker in "Horror of Fang Rock ; "I think it's an early Schermuly" (pronounced so early rhymes with it).
Jamie and Richard are a great double act
And in an odd crossover, in the Doctor Who episode Horror of Fang Rock, Tom Baker makes reference to "an early Shemurlley."
Great fact that they used your Dad's cigar tubes 😃
God bless Jerry Anderson man of the 22nd century
