  • This episode of Grounded looks at JetTrain, a low-fare airline based in Pittsburgh operating a tiny fleet of DC-9s. Initially launched as AirTrain the airline was forced to rebrand to prevent confusion with AirTran when they entered the Florida market. JetTrain were one of a number of US airlines to launch in the 1980s & 1990s, and like most of them ended up a failure with JetTrain ceasing operations within a year.
    **PRODUCTION NOTES**
    Given how JetTrain lasted less than a year and grew to a fleet of just three aircraft there are very few photos of their aircraft, 12 in fact, of which 2 are when the aircraft are either in for maintenance or after they ceased operations. Fortunately this episode is a short one so it shouldn't get too visually repetitive. There are no known images available of the airline when it was called "AirTrain" though as far as I know the livery was the same, just different titles.
    Yes that really is me in the drivers seat, it's a Class 47 diesel locomotive (my favourite type) and numbered 47643 which was visiting from Scotland for anyone that's interested in trains.
    A couple of other airlines are mentioned in this episode that have been covered in previous episodes, these are;
    Kiwi International Air Lines
    Kiwi was founded and ran by its employees, at its peak the airline operated 15 Boeing 727s. The Newark based airline lasted a very turbulent six & a bit years, during which it was grounded several times by the authorities and bankrupted twice.

    Eastwind
    Eastwind were one of many low fare airlines to form in the 1990s, based in Trenton, New Jersey they eventually relocated to Greensboro. Operating a small fleet of 737s the airline hit financial trouble and infamously abandoned passengers at one airport on Thanksgiving citing "Indefinite Delay".

    Compass Airlines
    Australia's first low fare airline and the first airline to take advantage of the deregulation of the airline industry in Australia. The airline lasted just over a year following the government and competing airlines conspiring against them.
