  • Making it's television debut on the (then) new Channel 4 on December 28th 1982, Treasure Hunt became a ratings hit and ran until 1989. This special episode of Grounded takes a look at the history of Treasure Hunt along with a closer look at how it was planned and produced as well as what happened next (Interceptor, anyone?).
The show starred Anneka Rice as the Skyrunner, Kenneth Kendall as the host and eventually Wincey Willis as the adjudicator. Castle Air of Liskeard, Cornwall provided the helicopters for the show, G-BHXU and G-SPEY with X-ray Uniform becoming instantly recognisable thanks to the shows popularity which saw it being used to transport the Skyrunner across that days game zone.
Filmed primarily across the United Kingdom the show would also have some international episodes with locations including Sydney, Florida, Malta, Switzerland, Israel, Singapore, France and even the first episode of the show took place in Indonesia.
Although the show was a ratings success and Channel 4 were happy to keep Treasure Hunt, the production company responsible, Chatsworth Television, decided to end the series and develop a new helicopter based show, Interceptor. Interceptor lasted one series before being cancelled. Treasure Hunt was briefly revived by the BBC with two series running from 2002-2003.
** Hello and welcome to Grounded, normally this series looks at the history of airlines which are no longer around, we take a look at their origins, their rise and fall and then see what went wrong. As it is the Christmas holidays, I try to avoid such a depressing subject and instead look at something aviation themed which is no longer around, in this case it is Treasure Hunt, especially considering that this episode was supposed to air on the show's 40th Birthday (28th December) but got held up due to countless issues. If you are new here then hello again, I hope you enjoyed this episode and hope that you might enjoy looking at some of my other Grounded videos. If you're a regular viewer, welcome back! I hope this one has been of interest and look forward to seeing you again for the next regular episode :)

** NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE **
Ok the first one is obvious, this episode was supposed to go live on 28th December 2022 which would have been the 40th anniversary of Treasure Hunt's debut broadcast. Sadly I encountered countless problems ranging from last minute script re-writes, editing software trouble and having no internet for a week - all of this on top of my regular air crew job which saw me flying quite a lot during the critical "final week".
Apologies if my voice seems odd, I had been dealing with the wake of the flu when it came time to record the audio (it took dozens of takes to get through it) and I've tried to edit it as best as I can. On the subject of editing, well we have videos now instead of a slide-show, it was a heck of a lot harder putting that together than the usual and really contributed to the delay but I hope you enjoy it :)
Bob, who is Bob? There is a mention of "Bob" when discussing the ITV Telethon (there were a couple of other mentions which were cut). Bob the Fish Productions look at TV History and have an excellent series looking at the history of the ITV regions (well their "idents") and hopefully one day will delve into the history of the Telethon as that is way out of my area of expertise.

This is another excellent video. You really do work hard on these. Thanks for reviving happy memories of one of the best game shows and also reminding how innovative Channel 4 was in the early days.

Interesting! I would have like to have been on this show. I am not aware of anything like this ever airing in the US- although the Amazing Race is pretty good adventure show.

I'd have like to give it a go but then again I'd rather be in the helicopter ;) I haven't seen the Amazing Race as that hasn't been broadcast over here and had only heard of it in passing once or twice, sounds interesting though having looked it up :)

What a werid helicopter company name 🤣 I never herd this brand before but I guess 1980s was crazy for names like this.
I do love these grounded episodes though expo this videos keeps fans going for history of Past & present

Haha, Cornwall has a few castles and Liskeard did have a castle but it was pretty much destroyed by 1538 and is now a park so maybe they took their inspiration from that :) I'm glad you enjoyed the episode anyway :)
