If you tie the tarp to the top of one of the poles, just above the lashing, before raising it, its much easier to cover the teepee. Also, if you then pull the tarp around at a bit of an angle, it leaves a small, oval hole at the top. You can then run your chimney pipe to or/and through the hole. It works well and is much safer SO YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE. Great video as always. 👍
Some good points there, will do alterations on next visit. Chimney is 8.5 ft tall and tipi around 12 ft, so next time will widen the poles and drop the apex down a bit and might work having stove in the middle of the tipi. Will be better for warming shelter having stove in the middle

Its very satisfying making a good shelter out of cheap materials. I'm gonna push the poles out a little more to widen it and add more tarps. Makes sense having more space as it doesnt need to be so tall. Thanks for watching..

Thanks Andy, I dont like to be enclosed but a tipi makes sense for winter camping with minimal heat to stay warm. I am the warm weather wanderer so need to live up to the name. Hot tenting is the way forward you should try it mate.

Even though the trees are a crop, its sad to see all the trees which have come down because of storm Arwen.

More power to ya, this whole video terrified me! I just knew you were gonna come a cropper lifting those ginormous poles, and that set up with the tarp next to a hot stove pipe, omg! While the video is incredibly entertaining, please stay safe out there on your own; You know it makes sense
What I didn't show is, I had to lift the tripod twice because I didn't remove all the sharp side branches which would have holed the tarp. Pleased it all worked out in the end. Thanks for you comment, ATB.

I remember you saying about making a teepee so you were the first to suggest making one in Harwood. I have built one before on a previous video in my local woods but got it destroyed. They are brilliant for using in conjunction with a stove over the winter months.
You are welcome to use it anytime Jimmy. Was thinking of extending the poles out and adding more tarps to make it a more communial shelter.
Do you guys think 9ft poles would do? To give an 8ft footprint?
9ft poles will still give 8ft wide or more diameter but will have a lower apex than my tipi. I chose 13ft poles because tarp is 12ft wide, shorter poles means I would have had to tuck excess tarp underneath and is wasteful. The dimensions of your tipi depends on the dimension of tarp you have and there are calculators online for working this out. I need to push the poles further out as it is to high, this will give me more area but if I widen it too much then I need to add more length to the tarp as the cone shape of the tipi gets wider then a larger circumference means longer tarp. The pole length's don't change so the width of the tarp doesn't either, if that makes sense?

Brilliant video pal.. can't beat a bit of hot tenting 😁 you can buy 45 degree flue pipe sections that keep the chimney well away from the top of your shelter, that'll stop sparks falling on it😉think I'd make the flue guard at least twice as big 🧐hope that helps..all the best Lincoln 🤙👍

The cold weather can be harsh but doesn't bother me if I want to be out, just took a break from the channel due to loosing my mother and haven't felt like getting out wild camping etc.. Tarp width is 12ft so poles were cut a bit longer. Any shorter then tarp would have to be folded under. Needs some fine tuning and will be making it wider next time, that will lower the tipi.
There was a few C hat moments in this episode. I was crying with laughter.

Its a bit too high if I'm honest but the pole length's are linked to tarp width, which is 12 ft. I'm going to widen it later which will lower the apex giving more area on the next trip.
Nice video, welcome back to a camp, we have our third beaver in the forest, lol, tipi is going to be ace, are you going to tie deadfall over it using a step ladder to break up the tarp ?
A true beaver would make some steps out of the wood, couple of eight foot pieces and five cross pieces, it looks strong enough to lean on, looking forwards to your progress.

Good idea about making the ladder. Someone mentioned tying a stick to the top of the tarp before lifting which is a great idea. Wish I'd thought of that earlier.

I enjoyed your watching your camp, nice idea with making a teepee, I will try that with my boys, but it was a bit enormous hight wise - I kept waiting for the BFG to arrive!! Good job though & your stew looked delicious...
It is high but pole length matches tarp width. Smaller poles means I have to fold excess tarp underneath. I'm going to push out the poles which will lower the apex and create more area
Try wrapping a fire blanket like the ones you can get for kitchens around the section that pops through the tarp

The hard work is worth it in the end for a shelter that will give many months of use. You can buy ready made hot tents but I would find more pleasure from modifying an existing one and would be a lot cheaper as well.

Good effort that. I don't think you need to lash those extra poles as the tarp keeps them in place and I do think that those Nomads who build these Teepees affix their tarp to the top of the last pole to hoist it up. Use a stick or two lashed together with Y forks to keep your tarp sheets off the flue pipe. I liked your kitchen utensil, but stuff it with fibreglass roofing insulation which will greatly reduce heat transfer. You can either raise the height of your chimney flue, but then, it might require guylines or getter a finer mesh, but those cheap tarps only need to be shown a cigarette lighter for a hole to develop. A roll of Black n Nasty Tape is useful for the holes you can reach.
A lot of good points you make, I should have done things differently. Next time I will make improvements, thanks for your input.

Did anything spooky happen?
Nothing spooky happened, I always bring the field recorder when possible but the rain would have spoiled the recording so left it at home. I had to raise the poles twice as the first time forgot to remove sharp bits off the wood which would have holed the tarps. I thought it would just be my luck if I failed to raise it second time out of tiredness, so pleased it all worked out fine.

Think you had loads of sparks because of the soft pine wood. Hard wood is much better and lasts.
Try put an eyelet through the tarp each side with a cable tie in each hole attached to the jack?

I prefer hardwood but there is none in the area. I did poke a small hole in the tarp and tie the tarp to the jack with twine but the pipe above still made contact with the tarp. A longer stove jack would be better or a 45 deg bend out and up so hot sparks dont fall down and melt the tarp. Fingers are fine, if they had made longer contact, would have been a nasty burn. Its funny how you do things without thinking lol

Check out some native american vids. I'm sure they attatch a long lightweight stick to top of tarp to assist wrapping around frame. Great effort and excellent vid. Poss a bit length on chimney and shove it out the top. 👌
Thanks for the tip, what a great idea, I never thought about that. Was thinking about taking a step ladder but you have solved it for me. I was so pre occuppied with filming and building, the obvious solution was staring me in the face and I didn't see it.
I had a Polish lavvu go up on me one night from the wood stove , from a smouldering ember to a full on tent fire in minutes. Luckily I woke in time to get out my pit and rip the lavvu off all my gear. The wife was surprised when I walked in at 1:30 in morning stinking of smoke
You were very lucky, canvas is a bit more forgiving than plastic but still have to be careful. I've used my Polish lavvu with a home made stove and in the morning noticed ash on the canvas, so definitely a fire risk. The spark arrester holes on my new stove flue are a bit on the big side, so thinking about wrapping fine guage mesh around existing spark arrester
Nice little camp, mayby use Y branches to push the edges away from the stove pipe
Good idea, not sure how I'm going to tackle the stove jack problem in the future but on the night, the Y branch would have worked great, thanks.

Thanks, I will try that. I would imagine if the mesh is too fine, it will eventually clog up with tree resin and chimney wont draw very well but its better than risking the shelter catching fire.

I hear what you say regarding Instagram, I'm trying to progress as a photographer and like to upload exceptional pictures which don't happen to often, rather than just for the sake of it on an average sort of camping trip. Quality rather than quantity if you know what I mean.

Build a wigwam in the woods you’ll be playing cowboys and Indians next 😂 can’t beat a fire in the woods mate makes all the difference.
Its something we did as kids and feels like I'm revisting my childhood, building a den in the woods, Japs and English with guns made from tree branches. Catty fights, once the berrys have ripened on the trees and learning how to make and start fires.
Make a very deep underground waterproof camp that you do not have keep doing things every time you go back.
