I was taught at Illinois Bell telephone back in the 1970’s. Yes on a switchboard with the black pulls. I loved it!! I was in high school. I was a telephone operator for a Hanes distributor for my first real job. Later in the 1980’s I worked as a receptionist/telephone operator. It had evolved so much to just a small console with push buttons. The first Halloween we had a dress up and yes I dressed up at Ernestine and snorted the entire day. I wore the big skirt and a wig. What a hoot that was. So it’s funny to know that it was still 1970 and that switchboard was still in use. Good times.

I almost think the caution “learn your craft” was self referential, as she had failed to recognize where the mic was
But of course each of them has some awareness to be responsible for.
I would wonder, too, did they see her hand going up and inertia alone prevented the boom moving away fast enough 💙

Hahahaha, Joan could've easily devoured Lily if she wanted to, but I don't think that this was the right time and place for it. Besides, Lily was trying so hard to start something with Joan, and by Joan not giving her what she wanted, Lily came out as making a fool of herself.

***** That's why she was being a bitch. What has Joan done to her for her to treat the host of the show so rudely? The whole time Joan was being nice to her. And who did Joan steal her jokes from by the way? And Lily's act here was original? Really?

    • @chonaV

You have to know the character. That's why she's bragging and showing off about her new "fame", hence she no longer wears the long dress that goes with the top half of her. This was a brilliant character.

7:01 - reply re: dating men should have been “...it’s hard for men to relate to me. I mean they have to be strong, significant... have a vagina...”
And 8:40 J. Rivers: “...why aren’t u married...I mean who was the 1st man u dated?” - didn’t Rivers know at that time??

Joan was so stiff and didn’t know how to react, especially to the sassy put down humor. Me thinks she can dish it out but can’t take it. Lily had the audience eating out of her hand by looking out to them and directing her comments to them rather than ignoring their presence like many stars on talk shows.

    • @badad0166

It was early in JR's hosting days and she didn't have the back and forth figured out yet. She was nervous. Stand up is a solo act and few can switch to hosting (listening) easily. She was, as I remember, kinda stiff all the way through her short lived FOX effort, proving, in a way, how magical Johnny was...
His demons made him tight and smooth, hers made her tight and stumbling. "One to one rapport" is what I was taught it is called. The nightly bedtime story for the nation. We need a glue like that these days, instead of the bitchfest late night has become...
p.s. Another vote for Miranda Sings getting inspired by this.

i remember her on Laugh In when I was just a kid. She was always talking about Mr. Veedle. It took me years to figure out that she was talking about Gore Vidal and "Myra Brekenridge" one of the best comic novels ever written. And, after "Orlando" and "The Christine Jorgensen Story", the third literary transsexual.
