Camaro GT4.R Hood Mod & 2Qt Coolant Expansion Tank For

- In Todays video, I installed a 2qt Expansion Tank for the LT4 Supercharger, Replaced the Cumbersome GM Check Valve Fitting with a new LT4 Corvette ZO6 Fitting. The Reason for this is to be able to monitor the coolant flow in an expansion tank, and to make it easier for future heat exchanger upgrade.
Anything that increased the capacity of the cooling system aids in ultimately cooling the supercharger.
The tank I used is from a 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT.
In The 2018-2020 racing season, the Camaro GT4.R, Built by PRATT&MILLER Dominated the @Pirelli World Challenge with innovative design within a production based car. I noticed that the front end modifications were subtle from the original production car due to the rules of the series. To offset the downforce provided by the fully adjustable carbon fiber rear wing, the front hood was modified slightly to allow the scoop to drop down an additional inch to reduce front end lift and to aid in engine cooling.
I Recently drove an 800 Mile trip to Road Atlanta and Back from the Shop in SC after making this modification and can attest that even in rain, there's no adverse effects, and the interesting aspect of this modification is that you can see leaves that approach the car on the road at highway speeds are pushed up over the car. In Traffic I can see significant differences in the heat waves coming out of the hood and lower manifold air temperatures. I am looking forward to my December track day at @RoadAtlantaLLC to see the differences.
All ZL1s have the carbon fiber cover in the center of the hood, not just the 1LE….even the ones that are painted black are real carbon. They painted the ones that had cosmetic flaws in the carbon fiber and just clear coated the good ones.
Excellent video, thank you. I was looking for an intercooler reservoir for my LT4 install in my cab over project and you documented EXACTLY what I was searching for. Cheers!
Great to hear! I love to share my success and I’m going to keep upgrading!!
Cool. I happen to have an 04 Cobra sitting next to the ZL1 1LE. 😎
Thanks for the great video. I really like the idea of having more air flow through the hood.
On a side note be careful when grinding aluminum on a bench grinder. If you don't have the right disk, the aluminum will clog the disk. When this happens it can expand, causing the disk to explode
Great point!
Good stuff, I like the hood mod, I would imagine there is quite a tangible downforce impact with it extracting hood from the high pressure area in the nose.
Where did you source the hoses from? Id imagine you used the factory line for the bottom hose, how about the elbow?
Thanks!
Are you referring to the hoses for the coolant bottle? I honestly went to the Advance Auto by my shop and had full access to all their stock. I found a perfect match for the Supercharger exit to the expansion tank and then used a 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor for the hose going to the pump. I might make the aluminum brackets and special order more expansion tanks, but they are quite pricey since the Ford SVT part number is limited to 2003-04 Cobra models.
As for the downforce and venting from the hood... it is quite noticeable at speeds exceeding 70mph.
Very Very nice. Keep up the good work, looks awesome, and should definitely make a difference.
It does! I can see cooler temps and so far the leaves fly straight up over the hood from the added airflow.
Great maintenance tips. This guy knows his stuff
Great video, the only worry is water getting into the fuse box
How would that happen? The box lid is sealed and the bottom of it is open to allow any water splashed into it drain out.
You really need to make the hood vent brackets!
"plz take my money" 😂
I have been thinking of doing so... just trying to figure out how to make the proper jig to duplicate them for easy production.
@@DavidWilks looking to purchase them if your able to make them!
