    I love my freeway flyer Transmission. I got my 66 in 2007. The engine and transmission was relatively new at the time. I’ve put on around a hundred thousand miles on it. The transmission and an added oil sump, has helped to keep my engine going strong.

      Obviously you use your car a lot and know how to drive and care for it. Many people don't. I try to make these vids to inform new folks who want to bring these old cars back to life. Have a great rest of the day my friend.

    So many people are silicone crazy they use it for almost any kind of sealing. Personally I prefer either #3 aviation or high tack by Permitex. A lot less leaks that way!

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. The problem is they gob it on so thick it breaks off inside what ever your working later on and can do all kinds of damage and clog things up.

    • @sc928porsche8
      @sc928porsche8 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes thats part of it, but the leaks are usually caused from not having a completely oil free surface before applying the silicone. The oils will contaminate the silicone when in its semi liquid state, creating a non sealing surface.

    A very cool video! What book were you going off of, the manual for the car itself or a Freeway Flyer book? Also I don't know too awful much about VWs, is the Freeway Flyer an aftermarket transmission?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Nick Brown The freeway flyer is just a term that came about over the years because it had the tallest factory ring and pinon ratio of 3:78 compared to the earlier 4:12 and 4:37 that they used in cars manufactory in the 1960's and earlier. I use a factory Bentley manual to get the tech. details. Have good one. Thanks for watching and commenting

    Very helpful! Ez do have a question for ya! Can I replace a hockey stick nose cone bushing without removing the transmission from the car? It’s has a small leak and is worn with some shaft movement. Thanks for all your help. Derick “Trix”

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see how. You first have to get the old one out.....? All of it! The replacement is very thin. When they get that bad. I always replace the whole nose cone. Under $50 And Yes your going to have completely remove the engine and transmission. If the nose cone bushing has that much wear chances are it could use a good cleanning and inspection. Could probably do the whole job in a weekend.. Also a good time to replace the engine rear main seal and check out the clutch and throwout bearing. Take the car to a car wash and bring a floor Jack so you can lift it up and wash the crudd off before you start. IRS tranny is easier than swing.

    It's nice to see a technician use hand tools. I cringe when I see someone take an impact gun to remove a steel bolt from an old aluminum housing.

    I don't know anything about vw transmissions. You use the term " late model" does that mean I.R.S. ? One last question are all I.R.S the same cases, or are super beetles different? Just trying to get some info if I ever go trans shopping at swap meets. Great series by the way. Thank you for sharing all your info for myself and others to learn.

    Ez what gear ratio could I use to bridge the gap between 2.06 2nd gear and a0.74 4th gear my ring and pinion is 388 thanks so much for your help!

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better to go to Weddle or Rancho and see what there is available and then make your choice. There are a few free gear ratio calculators on line. Play around with them and compare it to stock. It would help if you told me what kind of vehicle your using it in and what you want to use it for. Don't forget tire size, Horsepower and weight has an effect on everything.

    What is the best trany for a baja ?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For a street Baja I think the stock tranny works well but many people have used the 68 and later Bus tranny for the lower gear ratio and strength. It's very expensive to convert and have it shift well. Stock tranny and stock flywheel is a a good combo IMHO

    Do you have to lock the pinion and main shafts together to remove the big pinion nut?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Bradley no, The pinion bearing retainer is a press fit so it locked all the time.

  • @Thundarr995
    @Thundarr995 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the nut your trying to tighten is supposed to be 130 ft/lbs. Why not put some blue or red lock tight on it. Then it most likely won't work loose a few thousand miles down the road.
