I must say, your hard and diligent work is such a rich help and blessing to all of us who are trying to get our feet wet on subjects like the vw tranny....especially to guys like me who are under 40 and weren't old enough to work on these buggies back in their hayday of the 70s/80s. I really appreciate the sharing of your knowledge and experiences. I've built a few engines over the years, but thanks to you, I'm inspired to finally tackle some of my transmission collection. Thanks and God bless you buddy!
4.27.2023 lots of good info here . I didn't catch why you think the case is bad (?) . I'm trying to find a video on how to R & R the big main shaft bearing when it's a little noisy but the tranny works and shifts well . TIA, -Nate
Your going to need a factory service manual and gasket set. The book say's if you change that main pinion bearing you have to reset the Ring and pinion clearance. Many times on a swing axle. The noisy bearings are the ones on ether side of the differential carrier where the axles slip in..
Would have helped if you would say that at the begining. I use a car jack or the factory tool to push the bearing out of the case and my Harbor freight H press to take it off the shaft. You need to use heat on the case to install and to remove. Watch some of my other tranny videos where I show that..
@@TheEZGZ Thank you . VW's North American training says to use that interesting (and co$tly) internal puller, that's what I'd like to do here . You still haven't said why this particular case is bad . I'm always keep to learn and experience like you have is fast disappearing . When I had a VW shop during the glory days rebuilt transaxles were cheap and I'd been told to never, _EVER_ try to repair one my self . -Nate
i so need a transmission case to start my engine out of car as i have got webber 40's to tune in and there would be no room todo so in the car and there wasnt any listed on ebay
Lordsofmanorofbrixham ian vittery Yes it might make it easier but at some point you will need to do it in the car as well. Some folks make a hole in the fender well and cover it up for driving. Good Luck. Thank You for commenting.
Hay EzGz are there many special tools required for the box . Iv asked the outlet Vw supplier for a overhaul kit but they said does not exist and directed me to let someone else fix the box , price $6000 no way not happening. It’s only notchie in 1 and2 would that be synchro rings? Thanks Harry
can YOU HELP ME ? my buggy stuck in 3rd or 4th gear i went to roll it down a slight slope and then shifty it into first mucst have gotten stuck inbetween is there anby way to fix this thru the oil fill hole? or do you have anyother way to get it to shift again its a 5 rib trans in buggy
Well, that depends on how much you need reverse. There are several reasons it won't work. After driving your car to warm up the tranny drain the transmission oil into a clean container and let it cool. Maybe leave it sit overnight. Next day pour the oil into a recycle container and have a good look at what is left in the bottom of the original drain pain. Take it out in the sunlight and have a look. If it's full of shinny metal particle's you might want to think about finding another transmission soon.

@@TheEZGZ Thanx but the noise stops when the main shaft stops turning, it's bot the carrier bearings .
Any ideas on which puller to use ? .
TIA,

StrtRodder100 Oh yeah. Thanks for reminding me. If you see the sunrise in the East a bit early it might just be the EZGZ case fire

The buss tranny has a weak shift assembly. Remove transmission. Remove nose cone and you will see Brocken and or bent parts.
What do they call the plate that you use to hold the counter and main shafts with?
shift fork adjusting plate. weddleindustries.com/search/site/shift%20jig%20tool
That was a crunchy one.
Would you recommend rebuilding when reverse doesnt work on 1973 bug
