Thank you for the update after a year. So often the only reviews for devices are from people who've only used the device for a week or so at most.

The great thing about e-ink readers like this is they can be used like a book, you don't really need any extra light. But if there is extra light (like bright sunshine) it just makes the screen brighter and clearer. Only page turns use power. The iPad etc are the opposite.
iPads and similar LCD/LED devices not only emit light and refresh the display many times each second (constantly wasting electricity), but also need to emit far higher levels of light to 'keep up' with brighter surroundings - otherwise they're washed out and less visible. This is so backwards, I can see the technology disappearing soon after e-ink and other such reflective display tech becomes a bit more advanced.

A couple years ago, I came to the same general concept, except I never knew of Boox. So I bought a cheap used droid phone, did not put SIM card in it, but a 1T micro so. I downloaded Google maps (because, I also wanted to ditch my old garmin that died). And kindle ( take it when little room for kindle basic), and put on kobo, eluded, and audio books & podcasts & music. And keep my phone de cluttered, and keep it safe in pocket & just hotspot when internet needed (same thing I do with Kindle when away from home wifi). When I am not doing gps, I put screen on grey scale & low light, & power save. Worked so good, I bought a used A7 lite tablet to give me a bigger reader. Had I known of Boox, I would have bought that.

Hey, great review. Thank you! Charming presentation. Looking to buy my first ebook was looking for reviews on the Boox Poke 5 but yours will do.

Kobo or kindle devices work great. I have an iPad mini and it is wonderful, but I do get eye strain and feel a little tiered when I read for long periods.

I bought Poke 4 Lite which is a cost down version of Poke 3 , most of my reading materials are not from kindle, and I have a 100GB gdrive account where I put most of them, only download them when needed.

Out of interest how are you finding the Poke4 Lite? I'm trying to decide between a Poke4 Lite, a Leaf 2 and a second hand air. I don't need note taking as I has a Galaxy Tab S8 already but I do mainly want to use it to read books from my Uni library which is going to be mostly in the web browser (hence me choosing an Android one)
I've heard the Poke4 is faster than the Leaf 2 and the Air is faster than them all but still, there are so many it isn't easy!

@thebaldconvict coincidentally I also have an iPad Air 1 (sorry if Air that you meant is another product), for manga reading I still prefer iPad because of the color display, but for reading novels I prefer Poke 4 Lite because of compact and light. I chose Poke 4 Lite because it has a newer Android OS version than other brand android e-ink readers (CMIIW), so I hope it will have longer support for the latest apps. For the reader apps, I use ReadEraPremium and still test another reader eBoox, they are more simple than Poke built in reader, but unfortunately, they both don't have native support for e-ink display, so the menu is too dark , rather hard to navigate.

I was super happy with mine when I bought it but there have been problems cropping up and I suspect it is all due to changes made in the firmware. If I knew this going in I would have never updated mine.
I find that when I wake the device from sleep it goes to the home screen instead of just showing the last thing I had open. Does this happen to you too?

Mine has always defaulted to the home page no matter which application I was last using. In my first update video, I think someone had commented with settings instructions to change that, but when I tried to follow it I didn't have some of the menu options the instructions listed- so it might vary between specific models.

@@lalicurates Could you link me to the video, if not the specific comment, please? I am trying to find out what might be happening because it's honestly my biggest complaint about the poke 3 😅

I wish the kindle app on Android didn't have the page turn animation, you can install on this but it is not the same experience as an actual kindle

You said, you use a tiny bit of backlight - luckily it's FRONT LIGHT, so not irritating the eyes - - otherwise very interesting honest review.

The only question is why buying android device and not use moon+ reader, librera or some other app with tons of customizations (including taps to turn pages).

For my ereader usage, these types of apps are not compatible with the majority of ebooks I read. The vast majority of those books are either from my library (DRM protected Kindle format) or Netgalley. The apps you mentioned seem like a great fit if you own most of the ebooks and documents you plan to read.

Thanks for the review. The iPad mini hurts my eyes so I’m looking for an eink device that scrolls. Love my kindle and currently use my iPad mini to convert file types and send to kindle app which syncs them to my kindle but the message that certain formats with “send to” will not be supported has me looking elsewhere - possible supernote a6 or MobiScribe
