What are YOUR thoughts about Briefs? Do they CHAFE you? Or are you comfortable in them?

Good wisdom here... I love that artisan vs artist idea. My music tastes are quite decidedly strange, and I always just write things that I know that I will personally like, and then do things my own way. Sometimes you end up with that mythical death metal polka song, but sometimes things turn out VERY interesting and sometimes even something that could sell. Write the things you like and I think quality comes out so much better in the end.

Yes!! This! I think there is a lot of cookie cutter composing going on, and it’s showing in the cues we hear on TV. I’m laughing at some shows thinking “someone followed that brief just right…” LOL

I love making music everyday, in hopes that I’ll have so much music that when the briefs come in I can just read the brief and pick from my catalog and send it out! Moral to the story stay ready and you don’t have to get ready or prepare!

      Absolutely my focus as well!

my particular gripe is hearing people tell me just to be the real you / authentic, then at the same time I am always getting briefs that need me to sound like "this" artist or "that" sound. I'm just going to make the music I love making and let the chips fall where they will .

Amen bruh! That’s EXACTLY the way I pursue this!

My OH too he just wants to make the music he feels, or that comes to him. If it does something, fine if it doesn't that's fine too. But, I personally know if he was truly recognized in a good passive way, it would mean the world to him. For us not knowing this business, and how it really works, and us not trying to pay someone to "help" us, I think think he's done ok $ wise, so to speak so far, since I heard it can take quite some time? Especially since we don't really know WTH we're doing, and are kinda learning how this all works as we go. He originally just wanted to share his music, and it was my idea that, it could possibly be used in TV or movies as background music.

Eric. I only half agree with you - The 2hr BS deadline briefs, then yes just ignore them UNLESS you have something already finished and without a home that fits. But I have 650 tracks in libraries now and probably 600 or so of them were written directly to a brief and the rest were album ideas that I wrote when pitching for new libraries. My most productive library has 150 of my tracks, all written to their briefs for multi-composer albums and you get a couple of weeks to provide 2 tracks. From those 150 tracks I've had over 650 TV placements and if you include the repeats my Tunesat is at around 2.5k detections. Yes I write in all the popular genres they ask for, Pop, EDM , Tension, Hip Hop , Orchestral, Rock, Indie..I've even done a Medieval cue. I never have chance to get bored, there's always something new to challenge me and the results speak for themselves. So I think if you you want to make music on your own terms then sure, you can get placements by doing your own thing but I don't think you're going to get the volume of placements requred to make serious backend if you're not writing what's being used all the time > and I am talking of multiple cues making 4 figures.) so it depnds what your goals are I guess. Mine are significant income, passive retirement income and paying many of my bills in the present.

I think you are exactly right. Had this been 10-20 years ago and I had briefs coming in I would have done nothing else…but now…

Briefs are interesting. I got one from one of my exclusive libraries I work with last month. It was "Positive Commercial". As A Horror - Synthwave and Black Metal guy it was not easy to write music for this. but I tried my best. I think you can really learn more when you try new things. I see it as experience my skills. If my songs are nor taken they go to stock libraries. win win situation ;)

I get it. And it certainly will be about where you are in life or as a composer. Hope it does well!

think if I was in a position to do this fulltime and not as a 2nd FT gig, I could probably knock out some stuff for some of these briefs. But as you mentioned, I usually only send something in if I already have something done or close to done that fits it... although, sometimes you can get a feel from some libraries based the types of shows they work on. That can give you an idea what to write for potential future briefs and stock pile tracks ahead a time.... also, I haven't had this opportunity yet, but bet there are libraries that probably put out specific concept album briefs that allow more time to produce..... boxer briefs for sure 😂

Sometimes a brief is a breeze (breezy briefs?) and you have something for it, or your library will ask you to write it and say nothing but do your thing! And TBH if I was 20 years younger I would just crank and go. But I’m too old for this SH now. ;)

    Hello.
Thank you for the information provided.
    These are really useful recommendations.
Please tell me, have you had any experience with Broadjam ?
Or maybe your colleagues had it and shared this experience with you ?
If yes, could you create a video on this topic ?
    Thank you.

I haven't heard about Broadjam for years. I don't think I even knew it was still around. But I do think I used it years ago.

      @@MakeMusicIncome Thank you.
Since you speak in the past tense, it means your experience was not positive, I understand you correctly ?

Hey whats up im SK from Virginia. Born in 89 producing since 09. Have you sold sound kits more so melodies and any beats to influencers? Also any listening sessions with supervisors or whoever?

    • @MakeMusicIncome
      @MakeMusicIncome  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have not sold kits, or beats. I think beatstars is a great thing for some, but I am not comfortable with the use of tracks I may put up there in rap. Besides all that, I do know Clint of Clint Music works in both beats and sync.
