Hi great video 💯. I'm going to copyright 10 songs. Just wondering how long I should wait before releasing my album through TuneCore? I'd like to register with ASCAP but with my budget I'd have to do that at a later time. I'm the author of the sound recording and composition & lyrics, etc
Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

I sent a message to ASCAP a couple weeks ago and I still haven't received a response. Perhaps you can provide an answer.
I want to publish a work that I didn't write, but I don't know how to get a hold of the copyright owner. I know his name and where he lived over 20 years ago. I found a couple of email addresses, but they're no good. So I mentioned all this in my message to ASCAP and, since this guy was (is?) a professional musician with publishing credits, I asked if they would contact him and tell him I want to publish one of his tunes. He's got to be a member of either ASCAP or BMI and I'm figuring even if he might be a member of BMI, ASCAP should still have a way to contact him.

Appreciate the video, however, seems misleading to use ASCAP in title when you only reference BMI's process. ASCAP has you register as a publisher separately and you can do that as an individual/sole proprietor - you don't have to be incorporated - but then you can get both writer and publisher royalties. Not sure of their registration process which is why I clicked. The whole CD baby pro publishing (replaced by CDB Boost in August 2023, with legacy releases still supported) is confusing with the PROs though. Especially as CD Baby is technically a 'distributor' that only 'administrates' your publisher pay-outs (for a fee of course). The language they use makes them sound like they are taking the role of your publisher. Add the issues of Songtrust and the MLC on top of it and it is even more confusing. I'd like more clarity on those. The new CDB Boost is supposed to finally include Songtrust and MLC registrations also, but if not using such a service (for an extra fee of course) my understanding is that the artist would need to register themselves and their songs with a PRO and Songtrust and The MLC to be fully covered. It's such a mess.

Regarding your comment about how to register a 15-song album, it's worth noting that the Copyright Office looks at things differently, and you should mention this. The Copyright Office has a form you will fill out for a group of works, but it is limited to only 10 works. So, if you want to register a 15-song album with the US Copyright Office; you have to fill out TWO forms and then pay TWO submission payments. It is for this reason that all of my albums now contain 10 songs or fewer. I don't have a big copyright budget to deal with this. It can quickly add up if I want to have albums with more than 10 songs.
Also, you mention only how BMI does things. I'm a member of ASCAP. It would have been nice to see from you how ASCAP handles things.

Hi, just a quick question...when you registered your 10 song album was this done online? I wanted to register 10 songs the composition and sound recording. I'm not sure if the system would allow me to continue if I typed in the Album title as the title plus the songs would be 11 line items and the US Copyright has a walkthrough video that shows it would generate an error for more than 10 line items. Just wondering if you were familiar with this or ran into an issue when registering. Thank you!

Very informative -- thank you. Every time I think I know this subject, I find there's more to learn.
    I do have two questions:
When you register with the Copyright Office, do you need to provide both sound recording AND sheet music? Or will either one suffice as protection for the other?
When you use the option of registering 20 songs at a time, does it matter how those songs are then marketed? For example, 20 songs that appear for sale on two different CDs (or digital albums)

I registered a song on BMI and then the artist that recorded the song uploaded it to Spotify, but I saw that he typed my name incorrectly on Song credits. Would that affect me getting the royalties?

As long as you've submitted your registration correctly under your BMI account and it's linked to the correct artist, you're good. They don't use Spotify writer info to confirm shares. 👍 I believe the artist can still correct your name spelling through their Spotify account, though.

I don't have the beat maker's info. I am with ASCAP, and also own my publishing. 1. When registering my work, do I give myself 50% and the other writer 50%, then under publishing, give myself 100%? 2. Do I have to list the beatmaker since I don't have his info?

  • @draghicesco5880

I worked for something like BMI, building their backend. They basically cross-match your data (title and artist name) with everyone else's. Radios and TVs do send these long Excel files with what they broadcasted and for how long. It's a messy process that takes weeks! Soon most of them will require an mp3 upload of your song because this system has been abused so many times. So they are all moving towards switching to comparing audio files instead of text with something like BMAT. It's a nasty world inside there, fueled by corruption from their top ranking members who also happen to be the most successful producers in that organization's country.

If I already have a BMI account as both a writer and publisher believe the most direct way to move forward as an independent artist is to simply distribute via CDBaby, Ditto, etc. then handle all of the rest within BMI (song registration) and avoid using the aforementioned for any publishing management. Also no need for Songtrust. Make sense?

As a longtime beatmaker and award winning the only thing I would add is I submitted 100 + beats to Sony TV for a TV Show and many were used, I did need to register those beats with BMI or ASCAP to get paid publishing that I still receive. Beatmakers don't need to publish their beats unless they will be used in this type of way as a song beat.

I still have a question after watching this video & your video about registering as a publisher - if I am a BMI writer & I have my own publishing imprint via BMI - I'm confused about setting the right % if there are multiple composers involved. If I want the writer's splits to match the publishing royalties, does this mean my publishing company still collects 100% or I also split up that 100% to match the Writer's splits? This is hard to describe! Not sure if it's making sense...

Hey... can you make a video about all these organizations pay schedule. When and how often does BMI, Ascap, Songtrust, distrokid and Soundexchange pay royalties to their members?
If I've taken care all my business and I'm posting my music on the streaming platforms for the first time... who will I get royalties payments from first and how long would that take?

Thank you very much for such an insightful video Ryan, this is very helpful and explains many steps in the registration process! I am just curious, if my work contains sounds or a loop from the samples which were provided with the DAW when I purchased it (Ableton), does this mean my song technically contains samples?

    • @IndieMusicAcademy
      @IndieMusicAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Good question! It does NOT contain samples because those loops are royalty free.

Definitely disagree with No. 5 on registering instrumentals as a producer, especially if you release an instrumental project and have the appropriate ISRC codes.
The forgotten royalty is the live performance royalty. If you're doing beat showcases, beat battles, or if a DJ plays your music at a licensed venue... If the instrumental isn't registered, you can't collect those performance royalties through BMI Live.

    • @IndieMusicAcademy
      @IndieMusicAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I never said don't register your instrumentals. I see what you're saying but let's rephrase this to be a little more specific:
      1) Yes, a fully finished and released instrumental track needs to be registered (regardless of what it sounds like or if you are a DJ or not). If you already have ISRC codes that means the track is finished and released.
      2) A "beat" or (other bit of audio) that is for sale and not released, do not register because it's not in its final form.
      Hope that clarifies.

Great video and recommendations! Quick question... if I am registering some songs on BMI with a co-writer (we are dividing our songs equally for music & lyrics), should I put 100% for myself and 100% for my co-writer? Also we do not have a publisher, so this obviously still adds up to the 200%. I just want to make sure I am doing this correctly? Again, much appreciation for your insights and all the great videos!

Aaarrrrggghhh! I just went through a 7-day sync ready challenge with Michael Elsner. Michael said to sign up as a songwriter AND as a publisher on BMI in order to get 200% of your royalties. So, I established Songwriter Stephanie Phillips Music as my publishing entity. Is that wrong?? Will I regret that?

Greetings, I'm an artist and song writer who recorded a song for a producer , he asked me for my IPI# and my PRO witch I gaved him, but I've not registered that song on BMI because I don't have a computer access, and I can't use my phone to register on the BMI online service. is that a problem?

In BMI, when asked who the publisher is of a cover song that I arranged, are they referring to the cover song's publisher or myself as the publisher of my own arrangement. Can you understand how ambiguous that question is? Please clear this up, not only for me, but for everyone else who wants to register their arrangement in BMI.

    Hi,
I am a songwriter who composes the music, writes the lyrics, writes & sings the melodies, and arranges all the chords of my songs. I record simple piano and vocal performances of my songs to copyright. I am not technically producing my songs, but since the songs are structurally complete, would these songs fall under a sound recording copyright or something else? Thank you 🎶 🎵

My issue is that I can't as a BMI writer, register my arrangement of a cover song that is linked to its ASCAP publisher, and if I go to ASCAP, they won't allow me to register that song as a BMI writer. What should I do, I'm caught between a rock and a hard place?
