- Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict stone cottage in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get.

Hi all. So just to mention, this new lady is approx 8 years old and is on loan from a neighbour to see how they get on. So far, so good, but Toby is quite amorous on & off despite the castration. Other than that they seem great together. We are working with the sanctuary on ensuring she is safe etc. It's still very early days still, so although names are welcome, this may not end up working out. We hope he settles down with her soon, but only time will tell.
Bec & Sam ❤
We're holding thumbs!

@@NailahRoberts👍👍👍
You are doing an amazing job. I hope that the new addition works with toby. A good name for her would be Rose. Sam that brick work is looking so good.
Fingers crossed ❤
Sam made a random snippet of him going to a meeting, It struck with me and gave hope and drive. As I watched your videos and was impressed with your hard work and gusto. I am now 1 month sober and loving my life again. I know he didn't mean it when posted but he replied to my comment and it worked. I go every wednesday and parked my lack of religion and just did it. I will always love and appreciate this channel. Thank you guys.... I will work for free on your project. I can travel for free and work doing anything for free. I'm an electronic service engineer so can throw my hand at anything. I just want to show my appreciation to a random snippet of one video and comment that has changed my life.... Its a hand of gratitude to that simple thing
Well done you for taking that first step of your new journey. Sam and Bec are amazing people, capable of so much and it truly inspires, and you my friend are proof!
Well done and best of luck.
Well done. More power to you! Congrats on 1st step.
So glad to learn you've taken this step.
Achieved a goal. One day/ week as you go. Well done. 😊😊
In 1974 I bought my first house with my new wife. We immediately set about making changes. Ultimately we moved 23 times and lived in 7 different states in the US, and one foreign country. Every time we'd arrive in a new location and job, we'd buy some neglected house, although never as quite as neglected as your little cottage, but never as historically significant either. We'd renovate as we lived in them, with building supplies and dust constantly alongside our possessions. Your irrepressible optimism, your focus as a team working toward a common goal, your perseverance, all remind me of my late wife and I. I'm an old man now and my days of climbing and hammering are over. But my memories and my dreams are very much brought to life watching you in your journey. Love the content you create and I love your channel.
Sam or Bec may have mentioned the age of the cottage previously. Clearly heard it this morning approx. 300 years old, good gosh older than the US established gov!
Thanks Philip. Really inspiring and you have definitely had a very full life! ♥️
Yes we suspect built pre famine, possibly late 1700's early 1800's so up to 300 years old but we can't be sure exactly as sadly I can't find records earlier than 1830s which the cottage is present on. ♥️
here in the small town of westport wa. state. not doing anything any more. getting a little old for hammering. let alone rock.
Our gelding horse and donkey used to fight horribly, kicking and biting each other. Never stopped but never injured each other. If one got out of sight from the other he would cry and whinny until he found the other one. They loved each other.
Sam -- Your stonework is beautiful. No one will ever know it wasn't done 300 years ago.
Toby needed a friend. I have read that donkeys need companions. Going onto 69k subscribers!
You may have been putting off doing the doorway but you are doing a damn fine job. 😊
It occurred to me that hiring out as a stone mason could bring in some good money. What you are accomplishing is beautiful. I look forward to your new home.
Hi Bec, Sam and family! The stone doorway is looking fantastic! Great work.
Hope the donkeys have continued to settle in together.
I hope so too!
So heartwarming to see that Toby may have a companion. Great stone work. It's a very saleable skill!
As much as I enjoy and look forward to progress updates....it's great to see you just taking time to enjoy being a family.❤❤❤❤
Toby and Tilly.
💖💖💖
Exactly what I was going to say ! Think I still will anyway. X
Fingers crossed that Toby and his new friend are compatible. What a wonderful menagerie you have: donkeys, dog, chickens, cats, etc. Nice to see you enjoying some well-deserved vacation time and taking in the architecture of buildings you visit, too. Thanks for continuing to share the progress on your own blossoming homestead. Have a wonderful week.
@@coolcpa3321 love watching the collie . Obsessed with all the animals especially Toby ❤️🥰
So happy to see you all taking a well, well earned break! I simply don't know how you both do it 🤯. Running a home, raising children, restoring a homestead yourselves, tending to your rescues, making and editing these videos so expertly, being great aunts, uncles, friends...and an awful lot else. You're remarkable! Spreading joy to the lives, of all species, that are lucky enough to cross your path 💚. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story. If it works out, and I pray that it will, another name for the pile - Birdie - as a name as she looks light 😇.
We love watching Nell looking after all the animals and humans making sure you are all okay, we had a border collie called raegan he was super intelligent like nell xx
It makes me so happy to see Toby with a friend. He was so funny running away and then coming back, only to run again.... LOL Sam is doing amazing work on rebuilding the wall. I know it is simple but Daisy came to mind as a name for Toby's new friend.
I suggested Daisy too BEFORE I saw your post.
@@rachelcarter2443 Great minds think alike.... 😃
Сэм работает уже практически как профессиональный каменщик😊
Обработка таких огромных камней и кладка колон выглядит идеально!👌
Lovely to wake up to a notification of your latest vlog. Glad you got to have a wee break away. Hope Toby enjoys his new friend. I think “Topsy” would be a beautiful name for her. ✅✅✅✅✅
Loved Topsy & Tim books as a child.
If your husband wasnt an actual stone mason in a previous life ill eat my hat 😂. His work is beautiful, hes a very very clever man. Nice to see toby with a girl friend and him being a good boy. House is looking lovely guys beautiful
Sam is the man.
Sat up in bed with my hot chocolate watching your progress is my idea of heaven! What a wonderful way of life you have and just think of the legacy you're leaving for your future grandchildren. So heartwarming, thank you for sharing with us too. 💞🙏💞
Thank you so much!♥️
House is coming on good ,I think Toby was very shy at first ,he probably couldn’t believe to have a friend with him .im glad there getting along beats being lonely ❤🙏🇦🇺
Hubby may be good at mastering skills work, but Mama is magic with animals!
I really hope that Toby & his new friend will become super friendly with each other.
I’m touched by Tobie’s reaction when he first saw another creature like himself.
Meanwhile, I’m very impressed by the Sam’s stone work. Everything is looking sooo good 👍
Just perfect. Nell paddle boarding, Toby and Tilly making friends, brilliant stonework and great raking out to let the old house breath again, relaxing music and a weekend of family fun in the sun. Top work on filming and editing. No wonder you’re hurtling towards 100k subscribers. ❤❤❤
Becca and Sam, you both can be very proud of yourself. Becca for the pointing ( you said you did it better than those in the castle) and Sam for the stone work. Its amazing Sam. You did such a great job on the stones, you really did.
OMG I could have cried when I saw Toby's new friend ❤️Lovely to see you have a family break, you deserve it with all of your hard work! Sam your stone work looks amazing! Can't wait for the next installment ❤
Thank you so much!!
Tilly and Toby sounds nice. Good to see you had a nice break away❤ the stonework is looking amazing❤❤❤🇦🇺
Tilly was the first name I thought of when I saw the 'suggest a name'. lol.
Me too! I love the sound of "Tilly and Toby"!
Tilly is perfect for her.
Great job on the doorway! Absolutely love that you're saving this beautiful home!
Poor little Toby can't believe his luck with new friend and carers like you guys 🥰
Fantastic news you got Toby a friend. Hope so much they get on. Donkeys should never be on their own ❤
Brilliant work !!! Beautiful pic’s of your quick get away !! Hope the donkey’s adjust well and stay safe !! ❤️🦘
Wow what an amazing job you are both doing on the building its looking fantastic, you are really bringing it back to life. Thank you for caring so much for the animals, keeping everything crossed for Toby and his new friend, it made me cry watching them both together. Hows the little kitten doing with the broken leg? Bless you all.xx❤
She must be young. She "clacks" when they approach each other (opening and closing her mouth). She is communicating that she is not threatening, I am just a baby. We also got a donkey for a companion for my daughter's horse. Very attached.
Sam you meet each challenge/skill with such enthusiasm it's really wonderful and look at your new skills craftsman now!
I'm really impressed with your stone masonry skills. You have a good eye, and it appears you have some great stone to work with. It looks very authentic. I'm not sure if this will help, but if you drop a plumb line/string line from top to bottom at the corner of the jamb opening you can bring the corner of the stones up to that. Might be easier than doing it with a spirit level, given the unevenness and irregularities of the stone faces.
Impressive stone masonry Sam.
2 happy donkeys!
How pleasing!
hi, I worked as a stone mason for many years, and for someone with no experience you did aa really good job you seem to understand what's needed.
Continuing to love your videos and seeing the old house come back to live. I also love all the animals and the loving care they get from you. Hope things work out for Toby and his new friend. Could you please tell us how wonderful Nell came into your lives, she’s a special dog and a joy to watch her with Toby and the other animals.
Well done Sam with the stone work looks amazing. Bec you have a way with animals for sure. Your wonderwoman approach to building work on the homestead is admirable. Both great role models to your lovely children.
I think her name is Munay. This is Quechua. It means Unconditional love. See how her energy has already started to work? He will become a gentleman. I see it. I too have donkeys. 💖
Thank you for such a relaxing Saturday morning. Stone work looks fandabby.
The markings on their backs is a cross, to represent Mary riding a donkey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus. So glad To y has his friend
Love the look of the new doorway. What a lovely way to introduce Toby to his new friend. I am wondering about the name Daisy-Mae? Look forward to your videos each week. Keep up the hard work. Kind regards Haley.
Ahh that's such a lovely name. Thanks for the suggestion. 👍♥️
Toby looks so different from when we first met him,you have done a wonderful job bringing him into your family and giving him the love and care he needed.
Thank you. That was lovely. ♥️
Great rebuild of the door. Looking forward to seeing you do the other side. So happy that you had some family time. Toby will settle with the little girl. How about Tillie.
I think it's a winning day for all of you. Homes respond to the care given. Yes, those walls are so relieved to breathe! They are going to shelter and protect just as you have honored their structure. The door looks fantastic. All that stone work as paid off. I agree, Bec is a better pointer! She'll do a great job on finishing up! As for Toby, I do hope she's here to stay. Sometimes we fight that which we need the most. I believe he'll come around. They, too, are going to respond to the energy you have around you. The peace will flow. Have faith and trust. This is a very good time for the Irish Homestead!
It's important to get some time away. Looks like you visited a lovely spot an had a really nice time, despite the fish not biting. :-) You'll be a fully fledged stone mason in not time, Sam. Bec is already a master pointer and donkey cupid. Thanks for sharing.
Look at Toby and his happiness ❤
So glad you took time off you truly deserved it xxxx
I am so glad you took a little break. From my own experience I know how important it is. Your body and mind need some downtime. You all work so hard. You are doing an incredible job of bringing life back to your cottage.
Might I suggest Tessie as Toby’s girlfriend’s name?
Keep up the amazing job you are doing. Stay safe! See you next week.
Thanks it was definitely much needed. ♥️ Tessie is lovely.
Thrilled you could get away and enjoy yourselves, putting a little distance between all you want to get done and focusing on your family time must give you a fresh perspective going forward. What a beautiful property right there on the water like you are when you're all done building it'll be a perfect slice of heaven ❤ I hope Toby and your new addition can form a great friendship together.
Wonderful intro on your weekend break! The weather changes everything and the views are amazing. Sam's restoration skills are just superb. Truly a Master at work and he'll never be out of a job when/if he needs one. Becky's pointing skills are beyond excellent! Look forward to seeing the doorway (and everything) when finished. Delighted you've finally got a friend for Toby, although I can't tell which is which. I think 'Sally' would be nice for his new mate!
Oh my goodness, you have all achieved so so much. Your beautiful home is coming together. The chickens, CT’s dog and 26:13 now two donkeys. True country living. I know you have a long way to go and you have to make the most of the good weather, cos you know what will return but I know you will both remain positive and look back on how much you have already achieved. Very well done guys. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much!
That holiday break looked just what you all needed and deserved! Sam, you only put the first two stones into the doorway and it already was looking marvellous! ...as for the donkeys - well it was heartwarming to see Toby has a friend at last! She looks like an 'Edith' to me! You have all changed Toby's life so so much, I bet he thinks he died and went to heaven! Oh, and Bec - you're right, your pointing is far superior to the castle's pointing! They obviously couldn't get staff in those days either! 😀
🤣
Sam you are very talented! Your stonework is awesome! Stand tall you have done a terrific job!! As good as a professional!!
Great job on the door way look like the donkeys will be ok,nice one Guys ❤🫏🫏🫏🫏
Nice job Sam on the door framing. And it is so nice to see a Husband and Wife showing so much respeck to each other.
Thank you!
Какие прекрасные виды природы на первых кадрах! Похоже на рай!😊🙏
Lovely seeing you having time away from the build. You and Bec's are awesome doing the build, glad Toby has a friend how about Izzie ❤️
For Toby and friend to have some carrots and gorgeous Nell a treat too. Do you think she’s a Lucy maybe? 🤔
Thank you that's very kind. ♥️
Glad you had a short break and had some fun with the children.
Sam your stone work is coming along a treat.
I do hope the new donkey works out.
Wel done team.
Well done on rebuilding that column get it pointed I think it will look great😊 it’s so good that the two donkeys are getting on
I loved this video. Your mini break looked gorgeous. How you didn't cheer when the stone broke cleanly. Wow! I'd have done a happy dance! Great work this week on all fronts. Family, animals and the renovation. x
Your stonework looks amazing Sam. Thankyou to both of you Sam & Bec for sharing this with us ..🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Sam, Bec and children: lovely recreation and touring of Derg and Portumna. You all deserved it. Fun to know your pointing is top grade. And Sam, you and the stone are “speaking”. Grand work. I am chuffed for you also. 🥰🤗
Do donkeys get ear mites or similar insects that could be bothering her ears?
Hi Bec, Sam and family,
Great to see Toby meeting the potentially new donkey. His "studdy" behaviors can sometimes be helped with te introduction of the female hormone progesterone reduces male-like behavior. The drug cyproheptadine acts as an anti-androgen and may also help. I believe there are some donkey pheromone treatments (I've used Feliway on a cat) that are more natural. I understand your concerns about safety. I hope it works out for them.
You are doing such a wonderful job on the cottage. I really look forward to a new episode when it comes out. You all definitely need and deserve a break every now and then to relax and clear the mind. The place you visited looked lovely.
Cheers from Australia.
Thanks. There are a few things like that for equines but things seem to be settling down. 🤞🍀
Further into the filming i can see the size difference with Toby now!
Wow looks fantastic Sam, I'm not surprised you was a bit daunted to do the door pillars,
But it looks great,
And Rebecca works like a trooper, I said, dream team,
And Tobby happiness with a friend, how about, Tabitha? She is a pretty girl, she needs Rebecca love and care, and she will do very well x
That sunshine! what a great time away from the toil you all had together. The work is really coming on though, each video looks heaps further on than the previous one. Toby was beside himself, it was a real 'what the heck?' moment for him, he just didn't know what to think. I think the name Betsy will suit her nicely.
Bec, when you have a pristine cottage with beautiful flooring, curtains and furniture how will you keep the hens out? They think that it's their cottage too.
Thank you, Gillian. Yes, that was a much needed break, especially for Sam. It doesn't always show on camera, but he was in desperate need of time away from the house.
I love that name to be fair. Our friends daughter is called Betsy, so I'm not sure I can see it, but it's a great suggestion.
Those hens will soon enough be walled out of the cottage area! No chance will they be allowed inside. 🤣
@@theirishhomestead The day out looked a bit like the old touring videos, just sun and fun
Love your videos and watching all the animals wandering around while you work so hard. Not sure if it's true but the donkeys have had the crosses on ther backs since a donkey carried Mary to Bethlehem when she was carrying Jesus. I used to listen to the story of The Small One told by Bing Crosby on the radio in the 1960s. A lovely Xmas story.🙂
What a wonderful break you had, very much needed when you are working so hard. Great work on the wall Sam it’s amazing how good you are when this wasn’t a skill you had. So pleased Toby has a friend and it’s all going well. I thought either Tina or Trina as names for her x
Love seeing more of beautiful Ireland at the start of the video.
Toby is a different donkey,he is so happy..congratulations.
Doorway looks great Sam,have you thought about adding a porch for boots and shoes etc…maybe an oak framed gable style..could look amazing.👍😉
Re. Donkeys...They were both making all the right mouth gestures to easily connect & Toby was (just) being understandably very excited!! Its REALLY hard to know when's the right time to let them in together when its something you've never done before!!! So VERY very well done!! for the whole journey you've made on Tobys behalf! A very heart warming story! & That doorways great! Someone once told me it was common for people to build their own stone houses, but would get local experts to do the doors and windows so VERY well done there, you've done a grand job!!
Lovely comment!
👍👍👍
Thanks they are settling down beautifully it's a jot to watch then grazing side by side. Brought tears to my eyes last evening. She's a hungry lady though. Constantly waiting by the door for more donkey feed...only twice a day but blimey she will wait there for ages to see if she can guilt trip me into giving her more! 🤣
Sam I really enjoy your restoration work the homestead is a beautiful challenge. You and your wife do lovely work.❤
Que alegría tan grande ver que Toby acepta a su amiga , ojalá sea para siempre 💚💚
The opening shots of your much needed weekend away are gorgeous, thank you for sharing!
My original comment has vanished, but I threw my vote in for the "T" names for Toby's new friend, especially Tilly and Tessa. (I also fell in love with the beautiful old name "Maeve", which breaks the T&T charm, but Toby and Maeve does have a lovely ring to it.)
The horses (even the geldings) and donkeys I worked with over the years always engaged in some "mounting" forms of play behaviours, it's pretty common and completely natural in lots of species actually. Even our neighbour's cows (all girls) play like that, especially when they're very young. Hopefully Toby will calm down and learn to play gently, if he hasn't already.
Sam that stone works looks mint. ❤congratulations guys on the love match.
Great job cornering up the porch area. Was very impressed. Looking more like a home everyday!
Thank you!
Stone work looks great.im glad Toby has a friendi ,think Tilly would be a great name for her
👍👍👍
The work on the doorway is brilliant Sam. I am glad Toby has a friend and I absolutely love Nell as she was there with Toby to meet the new lady. Your building is now looking more like a home each episode and it will be a beautiful warm home because of all the hard work and love you both have put into it. So glad you had a couple of days away to relax. Love from Australia ❤❤❤❤❤❤😂
Glad you enjoyed it. It was a much needed break for sure!
Omg so glad Toby has a friend, I do hope they get on well ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi on the last video I suggested maybe get a friend for Toby not realising you had. So pleased for you all. 😊
greattttt video guys ,tobys a happy lad , entrance is looking good , love watching you all glad you had a gd weekend away in the boats and relazing xx
You guys have done a lot of work in a short time. Your place is looking great.
Well done Sam and Beccy , you're doing great work .Lovely to see Toby with his girlfriend getting on well , may Siobhan or Fiona as suggestions ? See you next weekend ❤
I appreciate so much seeing how you've treated that poor donkey, having seen them being treated poorly at farms over the years, that i came online especially to thank you for sharing this.
PS. My wife thinkd you should name her Dorothy.
I love how the place is looking and the donkeys are cute!!
So good to see Toby finally has a companion and his zombies were the best xx
It looks amazing! I'm glad you had a little time away. I have a name suggestion for the new donkey: Clara.
I love how you both work together !
Fabulous job on the door. Glad you all had a break, it looked lovely. Great episode as always 🥰
I think Tobey is thrilled... Beautiful stonework so smart to observe the work at the castle.. i think stone work is one of the most .gratifying worthwhile skills to have....
What more could you ask for family time a lot of hard graft and a new team member hopefully what more could you ask for in life. Love the ladies (chickens ) strutting about.
The Donkey is so Happy, you people saved His life, He suffered not just from neglect but awful loneliness, and He has freedom He never would have had.
Thank you. I hope he is finally happy. ♥️
Thank you for another great video
You're making great progress with the stone work! You're right about seeing the castle of stone gives you a deep appreciation of stone work! A name suggestion for the female donkey is "Tessa". I hope Toby & Tessa get along well eventually! God Bless You all!
I am so pleased you all had a nice break. And now you have two happy lawn mowers too......fabulous. 🎉 The stonework looks great Sam and keep pointing him in the right direction Becky 🤩. Have a great week......and to all. 🎉❤🎉
Brilliant stonework Sam .Between yourself and Becky you making an absolute amazing job of the walls. So professional and the way both get on with it all. Delighted Toby may have got a friend .Nell keeping an eye on everything and everyone .God bless and take care xx xx
Starting to come along loved your rebuild of the brickwork on the front pillar looking great as always take care keep up the hard graft ❤
