  • In this video, I take a look inside the HP T620 Plus thin client machine. This little box is great for building a network appliance, router, and/or firewall. It's got a lot of expand-ability options internally: 2x USB-A slots, 1x mSATA slot, 1x M.2 slot, 1x min-PCI slot, and 1x PCI-E 2.0 x4 (in x16 physical connector).
    I have these for sale at my eBay store here: ebay.to/3eG2C4j
    fully updated to latest BIOS, cleaned, and tested.
    If you want to add a mSATA SSD to your HP T620 Plus, check these out: ebay.to/30B1GWg

    There is a fiber 100mb card mounted in that spot on Hp t620 plus K1L95UA#ABA with a ribbon cable and fiber to the rear panel which allows fiber connect right between the mouse/keyboard and the mic/speaker plugs. This means there is no room for the extra DE-9 connector port on the back though it is simply omitted.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you mean there are variants of this machine where the DE-9 is replaced by a fiber connector?

    • @night4lover
      @night4lover 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a two DE-9 connectors on yours, the second one is ommited on the K1L95UA#ABA. Look right above your thumb in the video at 8:14 there is a square shaped cutout ajoining the DE-9 port and that would be where the fiber port would be located. The DE-9 is conncted to the board on yours by a ribbon cable. Fiber connector is a addon like this image found on duck duck go search for "hp t620 plus fiber" ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1352zMVXXXXb0XXXXq6xXFXXXx/699280-001-for-font-b-HP-b-font-T610-T620-SC-Fiber-Netwrk-Interface-Card-font.jpg

    Great video .... two questions a) is the PCI risercard included default ? b) which netword have ypu installed ?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      a) yes, the riser is always included unless someone threw it away. b) not exactly sure what you mean, but if you are asking what network PCIe cards I have used, I usually recommend Intel quad port i340-T4.

    Any chance it could be transplanted into an itx case? Eg standard standoff layout? Or could I cut a hole and cut off the black cooler shroud and fit a dual slot pcie card? Or nah

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah,... "nah" is about right I think... this is HP, so I don't think they are going to confine themselves to standards like itx to build their thin clients.

    Good day! Do you have any idea for the value of capacitor on the msata port both from near the msata connector and on the back side? Thank You!

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have the values off the top of my head. I'm guessing you might be referring to the A/C coupling capacitors along the SATA lanes. If you look up "A/C coupling capacitors for SATA" you might find what you need.

    Looking really nice. I take it you use it as a router correct? What performance could you expect running openvpn through this equipment could you share any results if you are using this as a vpn /router

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not actually using these for VPN, so I don't have "real world" numbers. But, if you believe in this methodology to estimate OpenVPN performance: www.snbforums.com/threads/openvpn-estimate-performance-via-openvpn.33416/ . then these are the numbers I got:
      # time openvpn --test-crypto --secret /tmp/secret --verb 0 --tun-mtu 20000 --cipher aes-256-cbc
      Wed Jul 25 10:58:18 2018 disabling NCP mode (--ncp-disable) because not in P2MP client or server mode
      real 0m14.657s
      user 0m14.573s
      sys 0m0.074s
      # echo "3200 / 14.657" | bc
      218
      Which estimates about 218Mbps OpenVPN capability.

      there's plenty of room for almost any size USB drive in the internal ports. the one i'm using is the SanDisk Ultra Flair 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - SDCZ73-032G-G46. i've had pretty good experience with these drives. I use to use Samsung ones, but they would fail after a year or so...

    Recently (2022/6) I purchased hp t620 plus on ebay. I understand that the machine itself is very low power consumption、so I temporaly used 65W power supply for hp EliteDesk or ProDesk, t620 plus generates 4 times beep sound and red LED flashed. I checked hp "Troubleshooting Guide Busines Pcs", The manual describes "Power failure (power supply is overloaded)", so I swapped from 65 watts to 90 watts power supply (with hp t620 plus) then machine is normal operation. Why so powe supply sensitive? And also thanks for excellent video.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, I had the same question myself. I tried the 65W PSU and it would not even power on in my case. I had to use either the 85W or 90W PSUs or higher for it to work. Some say the A/C adapters have a "sensing" line and that is used to detect what type of PSU is connected. Yeah, my T620 Plus never uses more than 20W so I don't know why I have to use a 85W PSU for it to power on???

      same issue to me as well though in my case it would not power on at all. I basically just snip out the barrel jack for the original power adapter for t620 plus and just rewire it with a 150watt 19.5v power brick from other laptop. test the voltage, all good, plugged it in, didnt powered up.
      just a few googling about it, a page from parkytowers mentioning about PSU mod, which basically mentions all the issue I had using 3rd party power adapters. It said just add a 330k ohm resistor and connect it to the center pin of the power barrel jack, so I redid my wiring mod, connect that 330k ohm resistor on that centire pin wire, and short it to 19v+. Plug it in, and here she goes booting up again.

    What do you think about using this as a Linux based Nas with USB external hard dives?

    • @ArtofServer

      if you're not expecting high performance I/O, then that idea might just work. Also, you could do one better, replace the quad port NIC i have with a external SAS controller (like an HBA/IT mode, maybe even RAID) and run a SAS cable to a disk shelf. basically, use this to drive disk shelf as the NAS head.

    Wait, Why does it have usb 3.0 ports in front, but your description says that it only has a PCIe 4x slot inside...
    So, 3 questions:
    1.) Why does it only have pcie2 slot when it is capable of USB 3?
    2.) With such a broad PCIe slot, why is it only capable of 4 lanes?
    (not sharpshooting, I would genuinely like to understand why it is manufactured as as such and where these things are indicated on the system... I am looking but can't find it printed anywhere.)
    3.) Can this system be pulled out and mounted into like a 1u or 2u chassis?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm really confused by your questions.... what does PCIe2 slots have to do with USB3?
      The x16 PCIe slot allows GPU installation, which was a factory option if you wanted greater graphics capability in this machine. It would allow the GPU to still work, albeit with less PCIe lanes.
      It's not a standard motherboard format, so it wouldn't be easily mounted to a standard ATX type chassis, but if you're comfortable drilling/tapping and customizing, I'm sure it would be possible.
