The Old versus The New, I test ride the Royal Enfield Himalayan 452.

  • This one has been a long time coming, and is a record of a very basic test-ride of the new Himalayan 452 from Royal Enfield, from Smalley Cross Motorcycles, near Derby. This test-ride has posed me more questions than answers, and was a particularly interesting experience.

I can relate to your emotions. My 411 took all around the country and not once she gave up on me. I loved the new himalayan but can not think of parting ways with my 411.

Good morning Navin, yes this old (2020) 411 of mine has taken me to some wonderful places, particularly across in Spain etc, and Scotland, so it would be very hard to let it go.
The new bike is very impressive though, and I wouldn't say no to one in the shed. Cheers and thanks for watching. 👍

    Hello Martin.
New 450 can't be a bad choice for sure.
In my case when the 411 came on sale I had been waiting so long for the reborn of a interesting long stroke single cylinder trail bike.
So the 411 might be the last of a kind again.
In my case, it's simplicity and efficiency suits me fine and therefore I will stick to my "last of a kind" 411.
    Thanks for the good review.
    Take care.
    Tony from France.👍

Good evening Anthony, yes I suspect that a lot of buyers will be those new to the Himalayan family. A lot of those I've spoken to just don't want to give up on their rattly old 411, myself included, but there are a number who will go for a 452 as well as, as against instead of.
Thanks for watching again anyway. Cheers. 👍

I've got a classic 500 and I sometimes think get something else but then I go for a ride and realise it's got character that I would miss.. 19 Tooth sprocket and a KNN filter cruises at 65-70mph 90mpg so all good... The grass is always greener? Great review...

Beat me to the test ride - since I canceled my order at Bob Minions...they've not been in touch!! A great review - I've posted it on the NC forum as there is a decent Himmy contingent on there. I rode back from Nathans in Devon today and got involved with a RE test rider which initially I thought was a 452 Himmy but I noticed the sari guard and a different tank so i think he was test riding what I have to assume will be the road going version. It was fast, My NC was out accelerating it but not by much. He must have been ragging it but from what I've read and seen they like the revs the new Engine. I'll try and get a go on Smalleys bike next week - btw I rode Nathans Triumph scrambler and that engine is superb - torque and power across the rev range lovely.

Hi Nev, that must be a bit of a disappointment for you, but you'll get a ride on Smalley Cross's machine I'm sure.
I'm thinking about having a ride on Staffordshire Triumph's 400 fairly soon, having read so many good things about it. I don't regard road tests as my forté really, but this one was an interesting experience.
Hopefully you enjoyed visiting Nathan, I got my timing wrong when I was down there a year ago, but at least I met up with Saddlebags 73.
Thanks for watching again anyway Nev, and stay safe. 👍

The ride home on my 411 brought home to me just how much I enjoy using the rattly old (2020?) thing, and how well it fulfills my needs - however, it may be worth watching this space once any teething problems are sorted (if indeed there are any) Thanks again for watching. 👍

I've not ridden a vstrom (yet) but I've ridden my son's 650 Versys and that was impressive. The smaller bike idea is a bit of an age thing with me, and I'm pretty much used to it now. I just bounced over from watching Charlie - Rest Day Rider having just rode same Bike and her views.. not knocked her socks off.
I too am of the same opinion, nice Bike, has all the attributes the 411 came lacking, yet didn't fail as a package, ok all come with issues, the 452 no exception..
The 411 was by design that bike for the tinkerer, the aftermarket addons and home market mechanic.. 452 has stepped up and a different class.
I'd like one, if no heavier, no longer or wider.. and the 411 price not plummeted..! will the price level up.. unlikely, depends on the market for the 452 and demand for 411's

The lad next door has the 411 and he loves it and was telling me only yesterday that he wants another bike with a bit more pep but he intends to keep the 411. For many years I enjoyed riding my 955i Tiger but it was obvious that I needed something lighter, and the Himalayan eventually fit the bill, low power or not. Virtually all my travels involve mountains (and mountain roads) so it's a bike that makes sense to me. The 452 certainly has more pep, and in many ways makes sense for me, but I'm hanging back for a while to see how things go teething trouble wise.

Hello Martin,, I muchly agree with your comments.. I have a 2018 bike and its been with me since new... I doubt its worth much to a dealer ,so I intend to keep until its at least 10yrs old ,, In my opinion the new Himalayan is designed to sell in the west not India, its probably alot better bike and will do pretty everything better,,,but does it have the charm,I dare say not... Incidently at the end of the month I going down to spain on my bike ,,,back roads all the way to Cadiz.... from there who knows where!!! reagrds

Hi, and thanks for those comments. Yes my 411 is very much here to stay. The 452 definitely impressed me with its performance and efficiency, and it's obvious that RE have listened to their critics, so I intend keeping an eye on developments with the bike, and if I manage to raise sufficient funds, I haven't written off the idea of a 452 residing in the man-cave - we'll just have to see! 😊
Enjoy your Spanish trip come what may; it's a country I've grown to love on the bike, and I'm greatly looking forward to my own trip across there in October. Cheers. 👍

Haha ! Always rag a demo bike Martin because I know how the dealers ride them !!! My RE dealer took us out on a group ride once, riding a brand new Meteor with 0km on it. We had to use a stretch of motorway to get to where we wanted to go and the dealer pinned the brand new Meteor and was doing 120 kph the whole time ( for about 20 minutes ). I wasn't prepared to ride my fully run in Buddy that hard !!! I let him get on with it and caught up later. So since then, I have successfully overcome my urge to baby demo bikes ( although of course that's what my instincts tell me to do to a brand new bike ! ).
It was interesting to hear your views on the 452 since you clearly know the 411 like the back of your hand and have done some major rides on one.
I should be able to test one soon but I am already expecting to feel as you do. I don't think it will be for me, not least because I don't have a Himalayan for road riding, so why should I spend the extra money on road performance that I don't need ? By all accounts the 411 engine is better off-road, the 452 only superior on faster trails, thanks to its extra power and better suspension. For technical trails where the revs drop, the folks in India seem to think that the 411 is infinitely better because it will pick up without any feathering of the clutch.
Also, although the 452 is being lauded as a budget ADV bike, the base price does not include any of the off-road bits like crash guards, hand guards, luggage racks etc. By the time you kit your 452 out to the point that you'd be happy to take it off-road and not risk damaging it too badly, it is no longer a cheap bike IMO.
You have the 411 set up exactly how you like it and you'd have to spend a fair wedge to bring a base price 452 up to the same spec Martin.
I am 99.9% certain that I will like the 452 but will conclude that the 411 is the right bike for my use case.
Those with a different use case will probably find the 452 to be a decent upgrade on their 411.
And then of course there is the financial aspect to consider - well, for most of us at least !
I will probably conclude that just because it is newer, that doesn't make it better than the bike I have. At least not in any way that actually applies to my use case !
I look forward to trying the 452 myself and rest assured that I will be taking it up to 70 mph to see how it feels at motorway speeds ( and above 👹 ).
Always rag a demo bike Martin. Just never buy one ! 😂
    Cheers Martin,
    Garry

Well yes, I know exactly what you mean now Garry, because when I handed the keys back and mentioned not trying it at motorway speeds because it's new, Craig had a bit of a go at me for not doing! Said that he's sat at 75mph in 5th, just to see how it reacted - so no more pampering demonstrators! 😅
I can't help thinking that someone coming into the 'Himalayan family' will be the ideal buyer, but more and more 411 owners seem to be taking the same view as me (and yourself by the sound of it) and sticking with what they know. There's no doubt though, you'll thoroughly enjoy testing the 452 - it's an impressive bike!
This was my first recording of a test-ride, and the amount of interest has blown me away - over 3k views!! (and 40 more subscribers) so I'm thinking that there might be more to come, in particular the Hunter, which intrigues me to be honest, so it might be a case of watch this space! 🤔😅
Cheers anyway Garry, just getting things ready for Scotland next week, so fingers crossed for the results of that one! 😎

@@martintraffordmoorlandbike7121 Hi Martin. Yes, bike test ride reviews always do well, particularly if it is a recently launched model. There is a reason why there are 8.987.098.774.988, ( accurate at the last time of counting, ) bike review channels on TH-cam 😂
Personally I would only test ride a bike that I could see myself buying, so that limits my options somewhat ! Also, demo bikes are few and far between in this part of Spain, so more often than not I can't even test the bikes that I am genuinely interested in buying !
Well done Martin, wishing you good luck for your Scotland trip !

Hi Ian, well I have to say that if I wasn't a Himalayan owner, I would probably go for one in all honesty, but on the ride home I came to realise that Blizzard really does everything I want it to do. Like yourself though, if money wasn't an issue, I'd have a 452 alongside Blizzard (and Daisy) straight away. Quite honestly, I still find myself pondering between the two, so who knows, after Scotland and Spain/Portugal this year, I might be of a different frame of mind. I certainly don't see the CF Moto 450 as an alternative any more.

  • @mrgrizzlyrides

A good video Martin and a fair appraisal of the 452.
I’m pretty sure it will sell well for RE.
I have not ridden the 452; but there are a few things that put me off buying the 452 just yet. The first is I love my 411 too much. Second is the fuel tank. Third it’s water cooled and forth the speedo. Nothing wrong with the 452, these are all my personal opinion.
I am lucky enough to have an Interceptor as well as Hera my Himalayan; so when it comes to the time I must replace Hera, I should like to stick with the RE brand. Hera is 3 yrs old in June and I intend to keep her for many years yet. So a Mk3 or even a Mk4 Himalayan might be out by the time I’m ready to replace Hera. For sure, as you said there are some issues regarding the 411’s power that raise there head on occasion. But, like many owners I adjust my riding (which a lot of the time is two up) accordingly.
As always Martin it has been a pleasure to watch and again, I find myself in agreement with your comments on the 452.
Great work Martin and ride safe.

Good evening Neil, and so good to read your comments. This was my first attempt at recording a test ride, although I apparently shouldn't have pampered the new bike, so yes, lessons learned.
I was impressed with the bike, but I just don't want to replace Blizzard, which is a bike that ticks my boxes, so there's just no need.
I must admit that had I had more time to play with, I'd have given it a more comprehensive try-out, so maybe once the rush has died away a bit, I might take it out again.
Thanks again for watching again anyway, cheers Neil and stay safe. 😎

Not an impressive review sorry, no offence. Not showing performance on dual carriageway or motorway surely is crucial to viewers? Offroad fair enough it is so wet. For the life i dont understand why you and some of your contributors refer to the two models as the 411 and the 452???? Enfield wont thank you for not using the official model names? They sell the Himalayan as the 410 and the new 450 why you are obsessed with such a pedantic point is confusing. I find it totally bizarre so my Volvo 2.0 Se which is on the back right panel, and in handbook and is what it is when you deal with Volvo is now a 1998 se confusing everyone you with?? It is purile when you get asked the model number give it for Gods sake? I have the Suzuki GSX S1000gt in your world i tell Suzuki it is an S999?? Bizarre behaviour. Your review for me was really half hearted and lacked so much about the tecno, usb, sat nav phone app to mention a few. The stand angle etc, centre stand option. Pilliion options, seat height, weight, torque nm, the hand controls, what did what? toolkit seriously quite a pitifill effort. The 450 has done really well your viewers would as would, to watch the Himalayan with the Triumph and the Ntk on tour in India done by simon. You can search on those three bikes, they all swap and vote at the end. They give a proper review for each bike. Sorry i dont know why you bothered. Your reference to Blizzard blew me away? Is that your name? My Bike would consume you totally. Now all your 411ers and 452ers will be slagging me off No doubt. Thank God we are all different. Sorry but not for me, you told me nothing.
