the generalist vs specialist paradigm is something I have an ongoing internal struggle with. I sometimes feel bad about not being able to make myself stick to something for any decent amount of time. But I have recently tried to make more of a mindset shift to look at it like I am stacking a wide set of skills. good video!
I feel like being a generalist kind of future-proofs yourself from culture’s ever-changing tastes whereas niching-down can box you into a style that will, most likely, eventually fall out of favour. And once you’ve been labeled, it’s very difficult to unlabel yourself because you’re “that guy/girl”. Thoughts?
I lean on the more generalist realm of things too. It's much more fun to be a generalist in my opinion. I'd like to share an idea about niching that I learned from a mentor of mine. The idea is that you can niche in many different ways. Most people only niche based on industry or skill. But you can also niche based on location, relationship, and even style. Realizing that you can niche in many different ways has helped me better understand how to use my generalist nature for good in the design/marketing space. :)
Glad I found this video. Being a freelancer in France, in video editing, you have to know that this basic niche, and especially where I live, is a pain in the buttocks 😅 I'm leaning more on this opinion, that you have to be generalist, to avoid going bankrupt when demand is lower than supply
I just want to comment that your channel is beutiful. Very interesting and helpful content, and your videos are amazing. Thank u for sharing your work, hope you keep posting! Greets
In my eyes, going niche is like the end game when I've been in the industry for a while and I start to lose my young energy. Niche = less work for more money, but you have to be okay with doing the same kind of stuff, and you have to have a style established. When you start out, you try it all and find what you like and learn new stuff. Once you've found your style and start to get tired of the grind and want to focus more on personal life, you switch to niche

Whichever direction gets you excited to be creative 💯
So true - I love that!
Interesting to hear this from the design/motion side - because in the production world its definitely more of a niche industry. Awesome stuff, homie!
those with hyperactive curiosities - "it's me... hi" haha
LOL we at the generalist club have many members and cookies have a seat
