You did a great job in this video and I think people didn’t understand the idea of it. To me, the goal is not to replace the drums but understand what you could do in the cajon and what is the corresponding sound of it in the drums. People are so dramatic, omg.
Just dont treat cajons as a replacement for drums. It is whole different instrument that you use to get that nice crispy accoustic sound usually coupled with accoustic guitar/bass. It gives a different vibe than drums and i think thats enough of a reason to play the cajon.
Painltd umm no. Our bodies build muscle memory when we learn beats. The Cajon does NOT replace a drum set. It truly is it's own percussive instrument. Typically, I personally use it when the bass player at my church isn't able to make it. It is perfect for acoustic sessions.
I have drums and a cajon too. Both are fun to play for sure! For more drum-like hats and crash I use foot tambourines on my feet. Which is like playing a drum set upside down. The cajon is for certain styles though, for heavy rock, metal I need my drums! During lockdown, the cajon has been really nice to have for home practise since it’s naturally suitable for quiet playing.
I was told to get a drum to help with healing from trauma (grounding, rythem, reconnecting with self) and found your video looking for ideas. The way you present this explains how to use the cajon so well thank you. Helps in understanding to break it down into parts like that. Made up my mind to get one! In appreciation. 💗🙏💗
@@pianistik4570 I'm quite tall and most of it is in my back, so it's pretty hard for me not to. But you're probably right, I could learn a better posture on cajon.
I'm a Latin bassist and had the opportunity to play a cajon at a Puerto Rican bomba-fest and I absolutely loved it. I was on the edge about whether to buy a cajon or not and this video sold me. I have a drum kit available at my house for fellow musicians to use when we jam but I like the bass better. But after playing the cajon, I felt that it could love to play it almost as much as playing bass. Sometimes I play acoustically with friends where we don't have the opportunity to have a bass and I typically just play hand percussion. But I would jump at the chance to play a cajon instead! Thank you for such a great video. I dig your white drum kit. Mine's white too, but not the same finish. I like your minions, too. That was really cool! ☺

This was the perfect video for me to find to understand cajons as a beginner. I also was surprised about the high production quality. Keep the good work up!
I use to have a white on white PDP set like yours. Like it very much, used it with a 24" bass drum. The white eventually fades and loses its bright white finish. It sounded great like yours does and for those who do not know it's the low end of the DW line and much more affordable.
Cajon, makes sense. I live in a city in an apartment. There are places where a drum kit won’t fit, for reasons of space, budget, even decibels. The cajon looks like the perfect percussion for a trio that plays coffee shops, with maybe something really hipster like a ukulele and a one string stick bass, sound would get fat with harmonizing vocals. Yeah, something like that.
True statement that feels like it's coming from a place of ignorance. No one is replacing anything; it's a completely different instrument. He likened the sounds to a drum set to help you learn how you would play it on a cajon.
Such a fantastic way of relating the Cajon to a kit. I bought my Cajon primarily as a portable bass drum to play with a piccolo snare. It’s great to know that it takes on similar characteristics as that of the different parts of my kit, when I’m not around my kit, while also wanting to find out how to find it’s voice as a separate instrument. Amazing video❣️
The Cajon is a fascinating instrument, but people often complain it being hard to mix because of the way it booms, cluttering up the mid bass. Using subtractive EQ to pull a bunch of low mids out of this video makes the bass section of your Cajon sound way better, and would broaden it’s application tremendously in a lot of band settings- acoustic or electric.
I really appreciate the breakdown of the 3 separate parts of the TAPA! (1:00 - 2:00) -- In my mind, I'm translating from a drum KIT to a single BOX cajon... Thanks, Alejandro!
Hey as a tipp: you can record the cajon also at the back in the hole. If you put a low pass on it, you have a more bassy sound for the kick-part of the cajon
Myself.... A person born with Rythm..... I was introduced to this a few months back..... And it was so natural. No leason needed. I break set Rythym s up with quarter notes on its bass. Then when back to patterns IUse Alot of triplets. Just think outside the square..... Have fun
It would be nice if there were more Cajon-Videos/Workshops. And also always a playalong, such as “Even if the sky is falling down“. I love the song very much now!
The snare, raspy kick sound just makes this a novelty for me, fun for a minute or two in a jam or a free form improv. Bothersome to me to always hear that scratchy to tone.
I hope you and those close to you are doing well too! Thanks for making this video. My dream is to use TH-cam to teach cajon to as many people as possible. I always love others share their passion for the instrument with new people here too. Have an awesome day!

Great video brother! Seems as though for me I can connect better with my hands better than with drumsticks in between my hands and drums. Does that wound odd to you? God Bless!
Awesome video. I do have one suggestion for you though. For your regular acoustic drum set, I'd very much suggest using a single piece of gaffers tape to eliminate the "oink" or echo from your snare. It'll sound much, much better. =)
Superb video @Alejandro the comparison with the full drum kit is excellent. Hadn't realised how versatile the cajon actually is. I'm motivated to revisit my cajon again.
Some instruments sit on the floor, some are worn or held, but I can't think of any other instrument that holds the player. Except those huge bike things from How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Damn, I really want a cajon, I swear if I had one I would play it better than 99.9% of people; I’m a skilled drummer but a long time ago I started to develop a finger drumming habit, hard to explain but I could play rhythms just as fast as anyone on a marching snare.
I just know such instrumental exist after one of the student in my school played it on a school show yesterday, and now coincidentally this video show up on my feed
The drum kit of course sounds so much richer and fuller, but the downside is that it's not easy to transport and take with you to the beach or to the park like a cajon. Great vid! Thanks for sharing!
Something else to try is drag the heel of one of your feet up and down the face of the cajon as your playing. It provides additional pitches in the sound. Works best with sock or barefoot.

Cajons are great, every time you're in need for some wood for your fire-place use one of them (joke). OK now serious; cajons were 'invented' when slavers learned that their african slaves used DRUMS to communicate so the use of drums was forbidden. Soon the slaves used wooden boxes as a replacement for the traditional drums. Although in my opinion a cajon can hardly substitute a real drumset, it is a great addition to a percussionist's instruments. There are really great cajon players there and they can do 'magical' things/rhythms with these things. I call them the 'poor-man's drumset. Every thing is fine when it comes to create rhythm. Life is rhythm and rhythm is life.
Little trick, use your feet and push it against front board to make sound effects and attach a tambourine and bells and other shit to make it more complex
It sure is a great instrument, but I dont think it replaces the drum... In fact, I think they'd compliment each other very well! It can be used outdoors too, and doesn't take a freakin truck to take it somewhere else like a drum does, which makes it a great advantage. But then again... Edit - Although it's not my music style, the whole song made me see that the cajon is pretty nice for playing ghost notes.

Totally agree! I mean, cymbals are a whole new rabbit hole by themselves! I think the Cajon can possibly be an extension of a kit! 🤩🤩🤩
I completely agree-it's all about exploring the versatility of the cajon and understanding how its sounds can relate to a drum kit.
