0:30 Mistake 1 - shouldn't play on the too low position of Cajon surface 1:40 Mistake 2 - should play with relaxed hands 3:05 Mistake 3 - Shouldn't mute the Cajon - play on the bounce of your hand From Vietnam with heart !!!
I just started playing on a borrowed cajon, and looking into buying my own, when i ran across your channel, and am so excited that I did. :) I am already guilty of all three of these items, will work towards correcting that, and look forward to continuing to look through your videos. Thank you so much. :)
Are they really mistakes though? It's a box that you pick up and start bashing. As long as your timing is in line with other players in your band then it doesn't matter I get the point about the back hurting but I just adjusted myself before the next tune.
i have to play cajon occasionally for my church when the normal drum kit is not available, i always thought my cajon drumming wasn't good so this was a great video!
It has been a long-awaited dream for me to drum 😍 now I have the time and peace to tackle this. I came across your videos and I'm excited and will follow you closely to learn it. Thought about percussion at first but think I'll start with a cajón. Are there different ones? What should I look out for when buying? Would love to hear from you . Greetings Daggi
Man, hats off. This is a very good YT channel. I'm totally convinced to buy a cajon. I'm just deciding which one better suits my needs/goals. I'm selling my Bongo and buying a cajon.
@@CajonMaster Thanks, man. I'm probably going to buy the Schlagwerk CP432. I'm just waiting for someone to buy my bongo, so I can free up some space. 😁
Thank you very much for this video< I am a complete beginner looking to buy my first cajon very soon. I came across your buyer's guide video and the other one where you play 12 different cajons, I found both very very useful! And I picked the one I would like. I subscribed today as well. Thank you!
Excellent instructions, well explained, , could you go over the basic samba and bosa nova patterns, am a conga and bongo player, but due to my hand surgeries had to switch to cajón instruments, if you have any instructions on how to apply conga patterns to cajón please let me know….thanks
Thanks Pablo! You can watch my Samba and Bossa Nova tutorials here on the channel. To get all the free tutorials and Pdf downloads you can sign up to the Free Tools area - cajonmaster.com/freearea 😉
Do any professional players opt for the "shell" hand on the bass tones ever? I feel it has a slightly more "focussed" sound and helps differentiate from the snare sound more (from a beginner!)
I think any technique is valid if it sounds good and if it's confortable to play. There is not a definitive rule. This tips work for me and I see many beginners doing these things that in my view are mistakes but if it works for you, it's fine! Keep having fun and let me know if I can help you with anything, cheers!
@@CajonMaster I am actually using my fingertips on the middle of the cajon for bass. It sounds good, but I do have to reach down more. And I've never developed using the heel of my palm for bass as a technique. I may have to relearn how I play.
Great video. Thanks. Great sound from the mic. Do you normally mic both the front and back of your cajon when playing live, or just the back? Thanks again.
Seriously...love the T-shirt. Any idea where we could purchase one? I was hoping it might be something you would be offering as a Cajon Master product. Thanks, I'm finding a lot of helpful information from your channel.
Is it a bad idea to play with the heel of your hand/your wrist? I often do that when playing bass notes, mostly because I find that it makes a softer noise than when I hit with my hand, but I don't see many other players doing that.
Hi Rachel, if it sounds good to you it's not a bad idea :) I've seen some players using this technique. How it feels after playing for a while? can you hold it playing an entire song? I would love to know. If you want you can send a video to show me exactly how you play it. Here is the link if you want to submit a video - cajonmaster.com/video-submission-page/
I taught myself to play the cajon, being a drummer at the base, and when I saw the video I said "See I make all 3 mistakes", but to my surprise, I don't make them, because I find them strange, but, I've seen many who make these mistakes
I don't know this cajon but I'm pretty sure it can tuned in the front plate. I will post a video of how to tune a cajon very soon my friend, thanks for your message 🙏
Hi I bought new cajon online In my cajon there is some coins on one leg I really don't understand is it related to a part of cajon for some sound effects or it is a faulty cajon ?? Pls help???
I think that mistake 3 is an important difference with drums (specifically bass drum) that we should take note of as the resting position of the beater is touching the bass drum.
Good point! Agree with you. Besides playing drum beats on the cajon it’s important to take it as a hand percussion instrument that requires a particular technique to play 😉🙏
you are very personable and do a good job. congratulate. I would just like to make a comment on mistake 2. it may be true for beginners, but in my opinion you shouldn't call it an absolute mistake. As an advanced player, you also use other techniques, because other techniques are also a different sound. For example, I sometimes use my knuckles to play or emphasize, or even the shovel. so, stay healthy and keep on playing ^^
Hi! thanks for you comment, glad you like the video and I like your point. It might not be a total mistake for some players. Stay safe and keep grooving! ;)
Another common mistake that people do when they play the cajon and it drives me crazy is people only play the cajon with one hand, your dominant hand, Instead of using both hands, alternate right, left, right left if you are a right handed person or alternate left right, left right if you are a left handed person.
Everything is correct, but i am not sure if you are doing it because of the tutorial or you are feeling more comfortable doing so, still dropping a low slap with your palm should not be causing you back pain if you lean lower, if you are not moving your back and it remains tensed or straight [because of a body size / positioning maybe?], you might get back pain, but personally i never do get back pain, rather the opposite i feel like incorporating upper back and lower back moves in the rhythm giving me a slight exercise and makes me feel more rejuvinated. I do have longer arms, maybe that gives me a little bit more freedom, not sure. p.s. i don't mean to sound like i am criticising your technique, i am wondering why you would recommend people to not go with a low slap, thats all.
Obrigado Leandro, concordo com você. Tem um pouco de reverb mas poderia ter mais. Acho que nos meus videos mais recentes coloquei um pouco mais, da uma olhada e me diz o que você acha. Um abraço!
I am a drummer with over 40 years of experience. I am working on learning the Cajun and every time I play Iam am killing my fingers. Does anyone have a technique that will fix’s this problem?
Hi! The most important is to play with the hands relaxed. Another thing can be the cajon you are playing. I would recommend a more sensitive isntrument, where you don't need to play hard. If you are just starting out, have a look in my Foundation course at cajonmaster.com. Here is the course preview - cajonmaster.com/course-2/ Let me know if you have more questions ;)
Thanks for your comment. where did you listened to it? I was using only 1 mic for this video, the sound is now great. In more recent videos the sound is better.
Good point Luis! Of course muting can work great as an effect. The suggestion of this video is towards beginners to avoid playing the Cajon and muting it 😉
Your mic did a great job at helping everyone hear the difference. I remember myself doing all 3 of these when I started lol! Great video my man!
Thanks Ross! glad you like it! Hope this video can be helpful for the new players, like your videos do my bro! 😉

after practicing a few times, my pointer finger, larger knuckle hurts a little (both hands). is that because I'm trying too hard and hitting too hard?
It’s important to play with relaxed hands. If you play tense and strong you’ll injure yourself.
