I had no space in my home for books, and it hurts my heart to see them collecting dust in a corner, so I decided to donate them to my local library. If I ever need to reread one, it's just around the block and better kept.
Harry Potter was always called “philosopher’s stone” and only got changed to “sorcerer’s” when published in the US, I think cause it was gonna be a more interesting/appealing title to that audience of people? I’m from Australia and always known it as philosopher’s!
Funny, if I think of the title in English I think "sorcerer's", but if I think of it in Spanish is "philosopher's", since the spanish translation is "filosofal" which is the literal word
When I read the US versions as a kid I assumed that JKR had tried to rip off the idea of the philosophers stone but rebrand it with a new name hoping no one would notice. Then I found out that was the one mistake she wasn’t guilty of!
Getting rid of books because they seem haunted is something I didn't expect, but I am 100% on board with (also I know someone who would LOVE some cursed books, so donating them is a very good idea!)

The original Harry Potter Book was “Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone”. Scholastic had a meeting with JK regarding the meaning of the word Philosopher in the US. They were afraid that kids would associate the stone with Philosophy and that is going down the wrong route. They also feared releasing “accurate information” that could lead to a mass of children going to extremes. The accuracy was regarding “Nicholas Flamel” he, in real life, was a French scribe who believed in and practiced alchemy. When he died he believed in the “Philosopher’s Stone”. This is extremely interesting that JK included some ACTUAL history in her first book, that being said, The US is a different beast. Parents were already upset that kids were reading books about magic, if there had been REAL information about Alchemy and a stone that they believe(d) actually could be created then parents would lose their minds. So, it became Sorcery and a Sorcerer’s Stone. Think of the negative impact that a Sorcerer could have, then think of the negative impact a Philosopher could have. It may seem like a small change, but it makes a HUGE difference. Even our favorite books in the series, and films in the movies are different than those outside of The US.

Last Ikea thing that was a serious pita for me to assemble at least had the decency to be a little more complicated than a bookcase. Not the Snow Flower and the Secret Fan :( That is such a beautiful book, definitely changed me. One of my favourites no doubt. I am so sad to see you pass on it :(
if its any consolation (or enabling): terms and conditions is the "second" book in the series, but the three books surround three brothers (one brother per book). it's a different story from the first, and you can honestly read it as a stand alone. there's SOME spoilers for the first book (as in like vague mentions) but tbh, it's nothing that isn't already predictable.
Daisy Jones and the Six actually has a gorgeous cover, it's the one where you only see the face and wavy hair of a woman, and the title is at the bottom while the author's name is at the top (or vice versa, but not in the middle). It gives me major 70s vibes I love it
That Folio Society book you dumped toward the end, the one with the slip case. The edges being sprayed only on the top was to make the book easier to dust.

12:14 fun fact: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the original title of the first book and references the name of an existing legend around the, well, philosopher's stone. This was changed for the American editions to 'sorcerer's stone' along with some other minor cultural details in the book itself, because the American editors thought that 'philosopher's stone' sounded too boring for kids. There are even two versions of the film: in the British one, they say philosopher's stone, and in the American one it's sorcerer's stone!

Jack!!! Snow flower and the secret fan is such a wonderful story of love, friendship, hardship and how easy it is to loose it all. You should definitely read it someday.
I find doing this so cathartic!
i 100% agree that sprayed edges look so better on hardback than paperback. I absolutely love spayed edges but on paperback books it looks kinda awkward and bit a weird to me sometimes.
I did a big unhaul like six months ago and now all those books are just sitting on the floor of my closet. Thanks for the reminder that step two is getting them out of my house. 😅
Ah, the hardest step 😂 Why is it taking the books to either a thrift shop or used bookstore feels like more effort than the purge?
@@ciannacoleman5125 lol, I don’t know why but it definitely does.
The way my heart sank to the bottom of the earth when I saw the title in the notification
You could’ve just glued some paper sunglasses on Scarlet. 😋
“This book is taking up prime real estate”. I get that. ❤
FRANCIS BUELLER?!?!?
I have decided that he was talking about Ferris' English counterpart 😂
Ahhhh- Frances Buellers’ Day Off , the little known prequel to Ferriis Buellers’ Day Off- set in 1940,s Aristocrat England 😂😂😂
I thought I heard him say that!! I had to keep going back and re-listen.
Jack’s so young, I am trying to forgive him ;)
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is one of my favorites. It’s sooo good.
Terms and Conditions can be read as a standalone.
And I so agree on that Gone With the Wind cover! It's spooky.😅
Good to do this regularly, I do it about 4 times a year. I think there's a lot of value in following up haul videos and 12months later a revisit to those hauls and if those ones are no longer loved, off they choof.
I love that halfway through he just starts roasting everything 😂
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is definitely worth a read! All of Lisa See's books are great
I agree!
My favorite Lisa See book. Read it so long ago but I remember it so well - wish he would give it a shot!
Couldn't agree more!! It was sad to see that one go...
Yes I came here to say this also!
Yes, I was looking for your comment, like thiis book is so beautiful 🥺
i started having heart palpitations after reading the title
Sprayed edges can be a nightmare on paperbacks especially if they get damp - I have one book from a charity shop that looks like it has bled out, and it wasn't even a murder mystery!
Scaffolding by Seamus Heaney was in the my GCSE exam for unseen poetry don’t even I shudder every time I come across this poem
Same haha, but we were really lucky to have done it in class when we were doing unseen practise 🤣
I’ve never seen that cover of Secret Life of Bees before. The cover with a jar of honey on a window sill is pretty and deserves the read.
This is the comment I was looking for! I’m like… Jack, I’ll send you mine!
10:30 funnily enough, the brazilian version of this book is EXACTLY how you described it!!
what is up with the editing nowadays? feel like this isn't the first video of jack's to have multiple takes of the same line included
no hate, just commenting in case he genuinely doesn't know
I was wondering too, I always think I’m going crazy
Multiple times in this video did he say something- go to a cut and basically re-say the same thing again. I thought my app was glitching!!
I love building Ikea stuff! I'll come finish it for you and build that new shelf lol
Last Ikea thing that was a serious pita for me to assemble at least had the decency to be a little more complicated than a bookcase.
FYI, If you ever need to assemble a Tigerfink, insert the last piece way before the instructions tell you to. It's so hard to get in position at that point, I'm certain that no one tried out the instructions.
Jack babes both those sjm series are linked😭
15:46 I read Lisa See's book and is very good. If you sent it already to the charity shop listen it on audiobook 😊
Can't believe the one poem you turned to was Scaffolding, you're giving me flashbacks to GCSE unseen poetry!
I am one of the people that have that "Gone with the wind"" cover edition and I absolutely adore it!! It always has a front spot on my library because I love that spine so, so much. So.. yea.. we exist :D:D
the amount of times I wished that we could annotate videos whilst watching this was insane, some of the some jack said was so unhinged and i was loving it 😭😭😭
PLEASE read family of liars it’s one of my favorites of all time. The quotes will have you melting
I love Frederik backman. His novella the way home get longer and longer is so beautiful, you should really read it
I’m in America and my copy of The Secret Life of Bees is gorgeous, and also the book itself is breathtaking. Would recommend ordering!
I’ve witnessed Jack unhaul “The secret life of bees” more times than I care to admit. I might need proof he did went through with it this time
At 1:10, the fact that u had to clarify that those are actual books in your home library, not a green screen, gave a chuckle to me😂😂
I read secret life of bees in my freshman year(with a much better cover) and it was one of my favorite books of the year! I heavily recommend it, the female-female relationships were beautiful and the motifs were used masterfully. It was a very important book for me to read at that time and I hope you pick up a prettier copy and give it a read!
i love elif shafak so much, there are rivers in the sky is hands down one of my favourite books ever
Not the Snow Flower and the Secret Fan :( That is such a beautiful book, definitely changed me. One of my favourites no doubt. I am so sad to see you pass on it :(
The title had me gasping for a second
Snow flower and the secret fan was pretty good in my humble opinion!!
The names they gave us has been my favourite book since I was like 16 and it gave me whiplash to hear it mentioned in a video
if its any consolation (or enabling): terms and conditions is the "second" book in the series, but the three books surround three brothers (one brother per book). it's a different story from the first, and you can honestly read it as a stand alone. there's SOME spoilers for the first book (as in like vague mentions) but tbh, it's nothing that isn't already predictable.
Daisy Jones and the Six actually has a gorgeous cover, it's the one where you only see the face and wavy hair of a woman, and the title is at the bottom while the author's name is at the top (or vice versa, but not in the middle). It gives me major 70s vibes I love it
This is probably the most entertaining video you have ever made - please never stop the unhinged commentary.
‘We could have had a Renoir painting and instead we got stabilo highlighters’, cracked me up😂😂😂
That Folio Society book you dumped toward the end, the one with the slip case. The edges being sprayed only on the top was to make the book easier to dust.
You can get custom made dust jackets for hardcover books. I don't know where but I've seen people with them so someone's making them.
Thank you for what you said on SJM’s books. Someone needs to say it out loud
The title-shaming is sooo real
get the American cover of the Secret Life of Bees, the cover fits the themes and it has a honey yellow coloring! it's so pretty I love it
Moms trying to be sweet and helpful and ending up disturbing our weird chaotic order of books being an international thing is bringing me such comfort lol
Remembering to tell your mom that your piles are separate for a reason before you leave the house is a skill everyone should have learned by the age of 10!
Jack, you have no idea how much I wish I could help you with making IKEA furniture and organizing things(if you wanted that), because that is like...ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO. Even when I was watching your videos of when you were ma,ing the shelves I just wanted to jump thru the screen and help you along😭😭😭
The strength to admit that you're "never going to read this" is super admirable! Good stuff my dude :D
I’ve finally admitted that I cannot possibly read all the books on my shelves. One box went to family, one box went to my local library and the last box was distributed among several Little Free Libraries in the area. Knowing that they’ll be read by SOMEONE helped ease the pain!
30:02 the irony of "i feel like it wasn't my fault because i was just doing what i was told" when discussing being photographed in front of books on nazism
7:40
I thought it was funny that you called it Francis Bueller's Day Off 😂
I did this with my books recently! I still have almost a library worth of books, but it felt good to donate the ones I knew I’d never touch
I just said it the wrong way around by accident
@@jack_edwards oh I kinda figured that, just wanted others to know about this absolutely ridiculous explanation for changing it, like wdym it sounds too boring😭
anyone who did the gcse 2023 exam series had scaffolding by Heaney as the unseen poem !! i loved writing about it xx
21:29 You won best cover for “Chemistry Lessons.” In fact, the cover for it here (U.S.) turned me off of reading it. But I saw a video of you talking about it and the glory of its cover, so I purchased a copy from the UK to be shipped to me. So thank you for that!
if you're talking about Lessons in Chemistry, they made a series of that and its actually very good! and yeah, the US cover is awful 😢
The author didn't like the US cover either!
JACK- I got ready to throw some hands when you held up The Secret Life of Bees, and then you said your issue was the cover and I breathed a sigh of relief. I love that book and I do agree that cover does not do it justice. The copy I have in my collection is much more suited. There are prettier designs out there! Please get a prettier copy and read it, I would love to hear your thoughts on that book!!!! 💛🐝☀️🌼🌻 18:59
The Secret Life of Bees is a really good book. If you ever pursue it, you’ll have to go for the US cover. It looks like a watercolor painting of an open jar of honey on a windowsill with a bee flying above it. The jar also has a label depicting the Black Madonna, which is important to the story. Overall, the US cover is much more aesthetically pleasing. 🍯🐝
