The story of how Sony Entertainment's CEO rage quitted a game, called it trash, picked it up later, decided to GIT GUD and ended up loving it.
More or less what most souls fans first experience with the games were, I give him credit for owning up to his mistake!

Yeah, he went through the grinder and came out better for it. Although, I didn't rage quit, I just got straight up very anxious when playing it for a long time, had to play in 1-2 hour increments, used to get all sweaty. Eventually you accept the rinse and repeat and it becomes so much fun.

omg, same thing happened to me, i am a pretty good gamer, my sis bought me ds3, and my 1st impression was, wtf? graphics are bad, controls are clunky, and gundyr was destroying me, after i get passed him, high wall of lothric was a nightmare, specially after passing the dragon, you will meet the 1st lothric knight, literally made me rage quit, i thought the game was so bad, its impossible, and lack story and design, i came back to playing alot of flashy, cool games, after a month, i realize, did ds3 really just destroyed my pride? i came back at ds3 when i understand it, i think the game was really good, i became really good at it, ive done no damage to all boss, i did the same thing from nioh 2 and elden ring. i think these games are incredibly addicting.

Every time I remember about what happened with DeS, I think about how many potentially great games never happened because of stupid corporative decisions made by people who probably have no idea about games.
Having said that, what this video fails to mention is that From got big when it reached other platforms, especially PC. Even with how bad the original DS port for PC was, it was after that that From became a household name. And they would probably never have found the same success if it wasn't for not being a Sony exclusive anymore. They could have stayed niche forever. A game being good, or even excellent, doesn't mean it will actually achieve commercial success.

Agreed, i think the creators of God of War realized this as well, when they made the right call to release the 2018 one to PC, and it's fucking disgustingly awesome game, why keep this from a PC audience is beyond reason.
However, Sony did get me to spend 500 USD for a PS4pro...unfortunately my love for Fromsoft games did not stop and i HAD to play bloodborne, and since PS NOW does not include my country (Romania) it was my only option...best money i spent though ;)) no regrets, Bloodborne was worth the 500 usd.

@@klefthoofrobert787 Yeah fully agree. Same case. I got a PS4Pro basically for BB. Also, the PSNow version didn't have the DLC at the time.
Hopefully Sony will continue releasing "exclusives" to PC, even if it's a couple years down the line, like they have been doing with few select titles.
And yeah, Bloodborne is worth it. I really hope it actually comes to PC at some point and we get to play it with better graphic fidelity. I don't expect fancy stuff, I don't want a remake, just higher resolution and better framerate / frame pacing is enough.

@@lucascarracedo7421 Oh yeah baby, can't wait to see 60fps with sharpened textures mods and other improvements :D besides the obviously more powerful platform (PC) we also have awesome mods, something you can't ever get on a console unless you sacrifice it and jailbreak it.

      @lucascarracedo7421 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@klefthoofrobert787 yeah it's time for BB to come to PC. Hope next years is the year and we finally get it. Even as it is, just having higher resolution and decent AA would help highlight a lot of the textures and details that are already there.
I suspect it will also do really well with people new to From's games that liked Elden Ring's combat but feel Dark Souls is a bit too slow for their personal taste, and find Sekiro a bit foreign in terms of general mood (and probably too difficulty for some).

  • @Sir_Him

I don't think FromSoftware being acquired back then would have been a good thing. I feel like one of the reasons they became such a mega hit is because Bandai Namco published Dark Souls on everything they could at the time. It was widely available, so people who didn't have the chance go play Demon's Souls were able to give the genre a try with Dark Souls. Had FromSoft been acquired, then their games would have remained on Sony's platforms. They would have sold well, sure, but I don't think they would have become a cultural phenomenon.

The most important thing to keep in mind, is that if Sony had purchased them, Dark Souls wouldn’t even exist. Dark Souls is by definition only a property because of the deal with Bandai. That means that we all would have missed out on that series, as well as probably as Bloodbourne which they probably couldn’t have made without the experience from Dark Souls. Crazy to think about.

As far as I remember Dark Souls 1 while mechanically very similar to Demon Souls is still a completely separate world with a much more different art style tone, level design, lore. From literally described the game was originally meant to be an Elder Scrolls clone. It was because Microsoft had exclusive rights to the game at the time and it would take a whole year before it would come to the PS3. Not sure that should be the take away here. Yes this time he managed to make what he somewhat wanted, but if it wasn't for already established titles in their history and some luck it might have very likely have not been published at all. I personally think the Souls/Borne games have some interesting gameplay and think of them as great games but I don't personally enjoy playing them either that much (mostly because of the fragmented and hidden lore) so I can easily see where he might have taken it to Bandai and gotten the exact same response. While Demon Souls, and even Dark Souls, did okay they didn't really take off in mainstream popularity until Bloodborne and then many more people went back to play the others with a better understanding of what they were about.
Things turned out okay, but he might have been better off just being honest and open about what his vision was to begin with. If he had taken the time to explain what he was going for the guy might have taken the time to get a little better and felt the thrill of overcoming the hardships at the beginning of the Souls games then decided to sign onto it. I'm certainly no fan of exclusives, but think of the difference in funding the might have had with Sony compared to Bandai.

I remember seeing Demon's Souls on Playstation, and all relevant playthroughs, and cursing myself for not being able to own a play station ( needed PC for work + entertainment. Could not afford a separate machine). Then Skyrim launched and got lost in that, during which time i got super-hyped and sad at the same time when Dark Souls launched, but only on consoles again. Went batshit crazy when Artorias of the Abyss launched as DLC and just resigned myself to my fate. Then early to mid 2012 , they announced the prepare to die to edition and lost a headphone in the process as i jumped with cable still plugged in XD, but was absolutely appalled at the state of the PC port, but then, in jumps Durante with his DSFix , an absolute hero he was for the whole community.
Haven't looked back since, some of the greatest gaming experiences of the past decade. Still , DeS and Bloodborne are the ones still missing from my catalogue, as they are still console exclusives.
Funnily enough, Fromsoftware would never have achieved the same fame by remaining a Sony Studio. It was the release of the 'Prepare to Die' edition on PC that absolutely catapulted them into...forget stratosphere....i'd say catapulted them into the exosphere!

Honestly? When you become an item on a list of product creators , you have to be built with the greatest common denominator in mind.
Even Elden Ring had to make compromises.
They had to optimize bosses with summons in mind, which is something the established souls community either HATED or didn’t know about.
I went through the game as a lone mage, and used the one shot magic drink as a last resort.
Then the Godskin duo ruined all of that.
I had NO clue that I was supposed to summon and upgrade my summons.
I didn’t have that problem with Melina.
And you know what? I had a damn good time.
It’s like….yeah she was whipping my ass and my summon died on phase 2, but she had a kryptonite.
When she uses scarlet aeonia, she stays in place to rot the area.
I popped my physick and dropped the meteorite of Astel.

Was it really a failure? It's not like Microsoft immediately bought Fromsoftware and made Dark Souls and every future game exclusive. PS players still got great games and Fromsoftware got to keep all of their creative freedom.
Besides, by the time of the PS3, Sony wasn't into taking big risks. They weren't doing too well financially, and falling behind the console wars.

Sony had a LONG time to acquire FROM. The Armored Core series was Playstation exclusive until Armored Core 4, which I think was 1997 to something like 2008. Granted the games were never blockbusters like the Souls series, they still helped carry FROM to where they are today. That said, I am glad to see that Sony missed the mark to get FROM on the cheap, though this still doesn't prevent Sony or MS from buying them up.

Sony would have forced them to make Demon's Souls sequels for eternity. Bloodborne would cease to exist

as a PC player im glad it didnt happen. I can't play demon souls nor bloodborne because its a dick move exclusive.
Their legendary status would only increase if those games were multi platform.
I really don't see the point of buying a console just to play an exclusive. No way i'm doing that.

I think it was for the better because due to the sales of demons souls I doubt sony would’ve let Miyazaki do his vision.

I really hate the idea of exclusives especially the fact that it always ends up in the whole console wars debate

Sometimes i don't understand why demon soul & dark souls are so alluring. Maybe coming from monster hunter, makes it a bit easier for me to get into this type of game.

Action packed and challenging enough to not be boring but keeps a really simplistic gameplay so everyone can still play it with half brain off (and I don't mean that as a bad thing)

I would say the way Sony ignored and abandoned the Vita is their greatest failure. Just look how successful the Switch is, the Vita could have had so much more success if Sony took better care of it and supported it better.

I wasn't his first time directing. He did 2 armored core games before Demon's souls
