I never knew this either and I really think every girl & woman should know the story. Incredible bravery and they helped to win the war.
Sabina, the unfair aspect was primarily an act of attack on the USSR. You understand that men, women and even children fought not for the reward and respect, but for the very existence of their country, their family. 27 million dead. And the fact that not everyone was able to pass on the parade does not mean that they were not respected! You have no idea how many feats Soviet women and children performed together with men. Sincerely from Russia!
The sacrifices made by the Soviet people disproportionately contributed to saving the world from the Axis powers. The great tragedy of the peace that followed after World War 2/the Great Patriotic War is that the Allies and the Soviets didn't finish the rest of the century as friends.

The Soviet union was alot less Racist and Sexist than many other countries of the time. Not being at the victory day parade was unfortunate but they were definitely well respected and decorated. They served with courage and they were disbanded bcs they would become outdated in any newer wars.

The loss rate was actually about the lowest of any combat unit in WW2, and far from being obsolete, the Polikarov is the only biplane with a certified jet kill, in the Korean war. It is also the most produced biplane of all time (was the most produced aircraft of any type until the Cessna 172 beat it), and with a huge number of variations, from air ambulance, liaison transport, training, agricultural, front-line supply, and even airline use.
The huge number of missions flown compared to the total losses attest to the former. Remember that the thing that was special about the Memphis Belle was that the crew was the first B-17 crew to ever complete a tour of duty and return home. Most members of the 588th flew far more missions as they did not operate on a "tour of duty" regime in the Soviet Union. The small bomb load meant they did little real damage but huge psychological difficulties through sleep deprivation to front-line troops. They did not actually stop the engines, but they were so quiet at flight idle that it made little difference. The Pu-2 was hand propped, with no starter, so at low speed and altitude an air restart was completely impossible. That is therefore an exaggeration. But many things which people dismiss about the Pu-2 were actually strengths - linen (NEVER canvas) and wood construction is quick to repair without extensive workshops, and is very light, giving an ability to fly from very short unprepared fields very close to the front lines and constantly being moved. That same light weight and low speed meant that just by flying slowly they were impossible to follow, so very hard to shoot down by any Luftwaffe fighter, as all used fixed forward-firing guns. That was the same reason that no Pu-2 squadron of either gender took part in the victory fly-by. The reason their equipment was ill-fitting was simply that there was no such thing as a women's fit pilots uniform initially.
There wasn't so much lack of respect as lack of understanding, and the women's squadrons (there were three, eventually) were only ever intended to be "hostilities only", as all reservist combatants were, from all nationalities and branches.
Sabaton are not short of stories to write songs about, from many periods of history - the difficulty is only in doing each subject the justice it deserves and fitting it into an album covering the relevant period of history or type of subject.
I'm hoping that one day they will cover the suicidal bravery of 155 Battery of the Royal Artillery, who held up an entire German army (13,000 on the attack with 30,000 men in support, 77 tanks, artillery, armoured vehicles and Luftwaffe support) in North Africa for 2 days from 26th to 28th February 1943 so that the defences could be properly organised to meet it. They fought Tiger and Panther tanks to the muzzle and went down firing, with only 9 survivors, 7 of whom were wounded, of the 130 officers and men of the battery. The final radio message was "Tanks are on us V" and at the last report they were singing and the wounded cheerfully encouraging the able-bodied. They set the field for the complete defeat of Rommel's final attempt to push back eastwards in N.Africa.
Sabaton treating us to another lesson in military history. The Night Witches were an all female Soviet air squadron in WWII. Tactically, they flew at night and would approach their target with the aircraft throttle set either at minimum or idle. This would reduce the engine noise considerably and allow covert and a relatively silent glide approach to the target. Some described the sound as being like witches riding their broom sticks…hence the term ‘Night Witches’. Enough of the history, this song has a strong Iron Maiden feel to it..rhythm on steroids together with the usual dependable vocals and musicianship providing a kick ass delivery. Great reaction Sabina…they are a great band.

There were actually 3 all female Soviet air squadrons, the 586, 587, and 588. 586 was the best pilots in cutting edge fighters, 587 was the second best pilots in modern bombers, and the 588 was everyone else in obsolete trainer/bombers. Mission wise, the 586 flew cover for the 587's bombing missions during daylight, and the 588 operated alone during the night. In total, there were 30 Heroes of the Soviet Union among the 3 squadrons, Marina Raskova who got the whole thing started and was already one, the one from the 586 was the highest scoring female ace of WW2, and then there were 5 from the 587 and 23 from the 588. The least skilled pilot group was awarded the highest decoration of the Soviet Union almost 5 times more often than the next most skilled unit, and was the only one that actually remained all female for the entirety of WW2. Just a group of amazing women all the way around.

wood and canvas plane designs actually ended up as a surprisingly powerful specialized plane type during WW2. because of how useless they were in plane v plane combat and the sheer number of strategies already available to deal with them from the ground, armies changed their strategies to deal with metal planes and accidentally opened new weaknesses to the "obsolete" string planes.
The Bismarck was also sunk partly because firing shells to make walls of water that would sink metal planes didn't work as well on cloth/wood planes because they were buoyant enough to "bounce" off the wave instead of crashing. and modern pressure sensors for naval artillery bombs wouldn't even register passing through the cloth so they avoided setting off newer ammunition when hit and could potentially still fly, or at least their destruction would not directly impact other planes in the formation. (though the large hole in the wing did not help)

I love this song and I love this video! Sabaton are my favourite history nerds/metalheads, and the Night Witches is one of my favourite stories the have told. I had not heard of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment and it's exploits before I saw this. I find I am singing along to the chorus as soon as the video starts playing. I just frigging love this!

I'm very admirative of these women, there were also bombers crew members or fighter pilots in others units, without forgetting those who served in the tanks and in the infantry.
Surprised you didn't first check "No Bullets Fly", but you should check that out next when you do Sabaton again. Night Witches is amazing story of heroism that is found in women too in a war that was mainly done by men.
And the fact there was 800 thousand women fighting for the Russians performing over 6 differant combat roles they existed possibly on all parts of the eastern front just wish they had women in the cod game world at war and the human rights violations committed by the Soviet Union against everyone regardless of gender, sexuality and ethnicity is absolutely wrong
There is also a Russian T.V. series called Night Swallows which although is fictionalised, does give a good idea of the kind of life the Night Witches had.
Imagine flying at night, no night vision not even a flashlight. then having to cut your engine to remain silent, gliding to your target, dropping your bombs, then having to almost climb out of your plane to manually restart your engine with no guarantee it would start up again to fly away. while bullets sprayed randomly into the air.

Немного удручен комментариями. Практически никто (кроме 2-3 человек) не обратил внимание, что это женщины-воины (на войне женщине тяжелее вдвойне). Любая женщина на войне-герой. Война не женское дело, но в годы Великой отечественной войны (вы её называете 2 мировая война) более 1 миллиона советских женщин сражались на фронте. Конечно, большинство из них было санитарами (в том числе на передовой), но было несколько десятков тысяч снайперов - самая результативная женщина-снайпер Людмила Павличенко уничтожила 309 фашистов. 2 полка "ночных ведьм", были летчицы и в дневной бомбардировочной и истребительной авиации. Даже женщины танкисты были (правда немного). Служили они и оружейниками в авиации, и регулировщицами дорожного движения. Много было женщин в зенитной артиллерии (посмотрите фильм "А зори здесь тихие"). К чему я всё это - когда враг вломился к нам в страну, все встали как один - и мужчины и женщины. Вам, рациональным иностранцам, этого никогда не понять. Вы никогда не поймёте нас. А мы можем понять всех. В этом и разница между нами. Вы увидели только песню Сабатона и больше ничего, что за ней стоит. Вы забыли жертвы Советского союза в той войне (кому интересно - посмотрите, сколько миллионов людей погибло у нас и сравните со своими потерями). Это не Вам, Сабина, лично, а к европейско-американской аудитории в целом. Вы лично хотя бы интересуетесь нашей историей, культурой и пытаетесь понять нас. Спасибо Вам за это.

Все уже забыли что именно Советский союз сломал хребет германскому нацизму и оказал значительное влияние на ускорение капитуляции Японии. И какая цена заплачена за это. Забыли и наши бывшие союзники, и те, кого мы освободили от нацизма/фашизма. Польша (поляки ведь тоже очень сильно пострадали от нашествия Германии - на их территории было уничтожено 5 миллионов евреев и около 1 миллиона поляков. Также во время Волынской резни было уничтожено 200 тысяч поляков вплоть до младенцев на территории Украины руками бандитов под предводительством Степана Бандеры. Справка - Бандера теперь национальный герой Украины.) например из 650 памятников павшим советским солдатам снесла 600 (в земле Польши осталось лежать около 1 миллиона советских людей). В Украине, Литве, Латвии, Эстонии в ранг национальных героев возведены ветераны национальных дивизий СС сформированных немцами в период оккупации, и главари бандитских формирований. И опять же массовый снос памятников советским солдатам. Согласитесь, на восхищение и благодарность как то не очень похоже. Бог им судья. Даже в школах у вас преподают что с Германией воевали Великобритания, США и Франция. Так чему удивляться, когда американцев спрашивают на улице, с кем воевали США во 2й мировой войне, и они отвечают, что воевали с Германией и Советским союзом. Потерянный батальон говорите? Я правда не понял, причём тут 1 я мировая война, когда речь идёт о 2й мировой войне. Советский союз потерял 27 миллионов человек во 2й мировой войне. Буквально каждая семья потеряла кого то из родственников. Зачастую не одного а нескольких. В каждом городе, в каждой деревне есть мемориалы со списками погибших. Например, у меня погиб дед в апреле 1945. Ради интереса забейте в поиск "Бессмертный полк" и посмотрите, сколько людей выходит на улицы каждое 9 мая с портретами своих предков-участников той войны. США потеряли 400 тысяч человек (Европейский+африканский+тихоокеанский театры военных действий). Посчитайте во сколько раз меньше. Поверьте, обычный русский человек гораздо точнее и больше знает о истории 2й мировой войны, нежели американский или европейский обыватель. Мы помним мужество маленькой норвежской армии, сопротивлявшейся почти 3 месяца, помним борьбу и огромные жертвы Югославии, помним французский полк Нормандия-Неман, помним американские поставки по ленд-лизу (пусть и не бескорыстная, но всё таки это была помощь), помним открытие 2 го фронта (у вас его называют высадка в Нормандии или операция "Оверлорд"), мы помним встречу на Эльбе и помним, как братались советские и американские солдаты, радуясь наступившему миру и т.д. и т.п. Продолжать можно долго. Так что мы то как раз знаем и уважаем подвиги других народов в борьбе за правое дело. Когда была война на земле США? Только во время Гражданской войны в 19 веке. Американцы не знают что такое война в их доме и никогда над ними не стояла угроза уничтожения нации. А мы знаем что это такое. Мы помним. И будем помнить. И наши потомки будут помнить. А то что другие не помнят - просто горько и обидно. Так что, миру - мир.

Не понимаете почему многие жители стран Балтии не относятся с каким-то пиитетом к памятникам советским войнам, а почему-то говорят, что СССР - это оккупанты?
Все, что как вы говорите, ОСВОБОДИЛ СССР он ЗАБРАЛ себе. Все эти страны Варшавского договора совсем не хотели в совок, совсем не хотели за железный занавес, но кто силой их удерживал? А чуть что так ввод войск в Будапешт или Прагу.

А ещё стоит вспомнить про пакт Молотова-Риббентропа, в соответствии с которым СССР ввели войска в тыл ещё сражающейся Польши, оккупировали ее и расстреляли 20 тысяч польских офицеров (чтобы можно было не опасаться за какое-то дальнейшее восстание)
И что непонятного почему Бандера национальный герой Украины, особенно сейчас?
Человек с детства мечтал о независимости своей страны. Сначала он боролся против той же Польши, а когда в том же 1939 году в Польшу/Украину вошли советские войска, НКВД, стали отбирать частную собственность, загонять людей в колхозы, ссылать их Сибирь и т.д. неудивительно, что он попытался найти союзника в лице Германии. Но Германия обманула его с независимостью и кинула его в концлагерь. Именно за то, что человек упорно боролся за независимость страны его и ценят украинцы.
Касательно потерь. А чем тут гордиться? Да, 27 миллионов, но не только из-за немцев. Почему Германия воевавшая со всеми и на 2 фронта, потеряла только 13? Может ещё и потому, что наше командование не ценило солдат? Кто придумал заградотряды и штрафбаты? С потерями вообще не считались, главное было "не отступать" и "выполнить задачу любой ценой". Чтоб отчитаться Сталину, которого все боялись.
Про первую мировую я привел просто пример подвига не только у русских.
Мой вывод такой: СССР был полноценной Империей Зла, лишь немногим лучше чем нацистская Германия. И в этой схватке он отстоял себя большой ценой. Да, это великая победа, но это по сути была борьба за выживание нации. Не надо пихать эту свою победу в борьбе за выживание всему миру и бить себя пяткой в грудь, что мы ОСВОБОДИЛИ народы. Не было никаких благородных мотивов у СССР, и если бы американцы с запада со своей стороны не дошли бы до Берлина, то вся Европа была бы под оккупацией СССР с насаждением советских порядков. Все до чего бы успела дойти армия Сталина сделали бы насильно советским. Успели бы занять половину Франции и Францию бы цинично поделили. Освободители так не делают. Не становятся новыми хозяевами, а приносят свободу. Это тоже самое, что заступиться за девушку и прогнать насильников, а потом предложить ей отдаться, возмутиться отказом (Я же тебя спас, неблагодарная сука!) и взять ее силой. Не надо носить розовые советские очки.

Но с другой стороны, если бы не стояли насмерть, то победила бы Германия, и славянские народы просто перестали бы существовать. И тогда бы наши потери были бы в разы больше. И за последние месяцы все больше и больше украинцев стали его уважать.
А что такое Мюнхенское соглашение? Это политика "умиротворения Гитлера". После разрушительной Первой мировой настроения в Европе были "лишь бы снова не было войны". Пытались идти навстречу, отдавали спорные территории, надеясь, что ситуация уляжется.
Как можно это сравнивать с вероломным планом по захвату Европы и ее дележкой между СССР и Германией? Сравните - уступки и военная агрессия.
Почему не говорить? Опять розовые советские роговые очки? Разве что цифры сложно установить потому что изнасилование всегда латентное преступления. Даже сейчас в полицию обратится наверное 1-2 из 10. Называются цифры от 800 000 до 3 000 000. Больше всего в Германии и Венгрии. На войне люди всегда звереют, тем более в войне на уничтожение. Очень многие солдаты жили идеей мести врагу, которая еще и подпитывалась пропагандой по демонизации врага, типа "убей немца!" и т.д. И тут еще можно добавить, что солдаты были не из свободной страны, а из страны, где жизнь не ценилась: с лагерями, доносами, репрессиями, поисками врагов народа и т.д.
Насчет единственной в мире, как-то сомнительно. Мне кажется даже, что у американцев точно были трибуналы во время вьетнамской войны.
4000 советских солдат и офицеров было осуждено за мародерство и военные преступления. А это значит, что таких случаев было в сотни раз больше. Видимо ситуация настолько вышла из-под контроля и потребовались такие жесткие меры чтобы просто вернуть дисциплину в войска.
Заградотряды немцы "слизали" с СССР) Два тоталитарных идеологических режима, что тут скажешь.
Я говорю о том, что иногда можно и РАЗУМНО отступить, не допустить окружения, перегруппироваться, сохранить войска и возможно позже успешно контратаковать.
Но в СССР была доктрина "ни шагу назад", просто идеологическая. Из-за которой и были дополнительные потери.

Они почему-то видят в США какого-то главного противника и врага, хотя США их таковыми не считает. Для первой экономики мира соперником естественно является вторая (Китай), а не 11-ая, какой была РФ. Not to mention they were not armed with any machine guns, the planes didn't even have proper secure bombing holders, they had to throw them out by hand, just hand guns and throwing bombs. The Plains were definitely farm yard equipment basically. Truly amazing and let's defend our country as woman of arms.
P.S have you seen Soldier of Heaven by Sabaton yet? If not check that. It has interesting history to it, also quite macabre story.
They were some SERIOUSLY bad@$$ ladies! The last one passed away in 2012. May their courage and determination be remembered until the end of humanity.

Marina Raskova herself headed the 587th Bomber Regiment. The training of the new compound was conducted in Engels. Initially, it was planned to arm the regiment with Su-2 aircraft, but they were withdrawn from service and the regiment was armed with Pe-2 dive bombers. On November 25, 1942, the regiment was ready for combat operations. The combat activity of the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment began during the Battle of Stalingrad. On December 1, 1942, he left for the active army. During the flight to the front on January 4, caught in difficult weather conditions, the commander of the regiment, Hero of the Soviet Union Marina Mikhailovna Raskova, died in an aviation accident. At the request of the pilots, the regiment was given her name.
