I think what hit you most was the fact that this woman went out after the war to find every crashside where one of her 'girls' was downed. It reminded you how young these women were.

My father's family came from Poland. And were part of the nobility. He was captured at the begining of the war and sent to Siberia, managed to escape and get to Palistine and joined the Polish Army in Eygpt His sister joined the Russian Army and became a decorated sniper. This I di not know. Until I arranged a 100 th birthday for him in his home town. Unfortunatly I did not get to meet her as she had passed away that year. Hope she is with my dad, and having a drink of Vodka.

Well Andre and Dominica, you are slowly becoming my favourite reactors.
Sabaton has a way to find the stories that almost get forgotten but really needs to be told and Joakim(who writes most of the songs) are a true storyteller. Thanks ever so much for the heartfelt reaction.🥰

Aye, another emotional one that digs into your heart. I confess that that part where we learn that their Commissar sought out every crash site is where I 'break'.
On a tangent, I love to hear the way your accent comes through just slightly in your excellent English - I am not in any way saying that *you* guys are old when I say that hearing you takes me back to when I used to work assisting a milkman when I was a boy and I used to deliver to this old Polish woman, a refugee from the war. She always used to give me sweets and a quick drink when I would call for the money on a Saturday. You can tell that that small kindness meant a lot because I recall it fifty years on!

The thing about the name was that aparently, the sound their planes made gliding overhead without engines running were similar to what you'd imagine witches flying on broomsticks would sound. So fear and fact mixed and people gave them the name "night witches".

I like your reaction here. I am a man, and I believe men should mostly fight and not women, but certainly I have always been glad to see women take their turn and do so well. The Night Witches were incredibly hard on German morale, all out of proportion to the physical damage they inflicted. Having these deadly women flying around looking for infantry trying to rest destroyed the rest of huge numbers of German soldiers. When it was cold, VERY cold in Russia, they still had to be careful about lighting fires. There have been stories of the Night Witches detecting and bombing German soldiers' camps because one solder lit a cigarette outside where the Witches could spot it.

Everyone of those valiant women, I could just hear the conversation after the taunts: "You boys have no idea whatsoever what WE are capable of." I LOVE these honest reactions and the appreciation of the literal history of it. Thank you. You got another subscriber. I LOVE husband and wife having this sort of interaction and learning something new. Hat's off to you both. Hubs and wife...so much of this is what I have shared with my wife and introduced her to, and puts my son to sleep as we went to the concerts while my wife was pregnant with our son. Colic, fussy, just don't wanna: yeah...and when I introduced my wife to Josh Groban after her divorce from her ex....well, my all over the place music taste...even now, after being married for almost 13 years (lucky 13) when she is down, I put on "You are loved" or if our son is out of sorts, put on Nightwish, Sabaton, Sonata Arctica: all just makes everything alright. My wife and I LOVE seeing honest reactions to songs that have such fundamental meaning to us together and individually. Please, keep it up. She don't talk too much, by the way, hubs. Your wife needs a huge hug and kiss at the end. THAT is my 1 single disappointment for this video. Hugs and kisses to your wife from this internet stranger.

There were originally 3 units were set up for women. They were created because women wanted to fight against the Nazis, many of them already pilots, they had written letters to Marina Roskova a famous pilot who in turn petitioned Stalin on their behalf. Roskova was authorized to set up a three units a night bomber regiment, a day bomber regiment and a fighter regiment. In the end only the night bomber regiment remained entirely female. Overall it was the most successful and a measure of this is that was renamed Tamman Guards regiment which was an indication that it was an elite or superior regiment .Roskova initially lead the day unit but was killed in a crash. She was given a State Funeral. The fighter regiment was the unit which had the most integration of Male pilots had as a unit less accolades. However several of the original members were such superior pilots that the transferred to free hunting squadrons which only the best pilots were members. Two them became aces. The first to become an ace was Lydia litvyak who died in action shortly before her 21st birthday.

  • @isaiahwelch8066
    @isaiahwelch8066 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@MerchantofAlba: The thing about this story is that because of the Cold War, the exploits of this bomber regiment was largely unknown until after 1991, after the Soviet Union fell.
Sadly, as far as I know, there are no recorded interviews with any of the Night Witches that survived the war. As such, their story is now truly history, as the last Night Witch passed away in 2017.

  • @VerchielxKanda

Their commander went to find every single one of her girls, because they were called traitors and defectors, because they never came back. She wanted to prove that they died for their country and that their names should be remembered and honored.
In an interview with a surviving Night Witch, she said that if you dug your finger into the plane it would rip. It was that flimsy. She was proud of the title Night Witch. She also spoke fondly of a girl who survived 7 flights out. Queens! Every single one of them.

in reality, in every region and city of the USSR, there is a school of piloting. they worked before the war from the mid-1930s. The right in the USSR to get any profession of a woman. As if you look at the West itself as a whole. Or rather in Europe. We had no concept of a male or female profession. Yes, I'm Russian.)) ) My grandmother fought and ended the war as a foreman by profession, a mechanic, a driver of a T-34 tank. apart from the incredible story and this awesome animation, i really love the story of them.
most importantly, that when they started, they didn't have a nickname. they got it out of fear from their enemies, which could be considered the highest honor for any military unit.
in the later stages of the war, they were SOOO feared, that if a german soldier shoots down a "Nachthexe", he instantly earned an Iron Cross for it, the german equivalent of the medal of honor.
i think their biggest strong suit was "just" being women. being totally irrationally, not confirming to "normal" tactics etc.
what their commissar did for them in the end, was the real hero's deed, since that was in no way common.

"like they were set up for the failure"
That's because this video doesn't really developes the "insignificant", which could give a wrong impression to a viewer.
As it's said, those were the LEAST skilled of ALL women deployed - there were two more, fighter and heavy bomber regiments with a regular equipment.
But that doesn't mean military didn't cared of them at all - those women might be unskilled, but pilots nevertheless, and though sending them into battle on a real military planes would've been a waste of lives and equipment, they weren't dismissed, but was given a task they could handle - Po-2 was a very simple and widespread plane, which any pilot in USSR flew or could fly, and given both lack of necessary combat skills and reflexes by those girls, those planes were perfect for the missions that didn't required any of it - perseverance and courage was enough.
Yes, it was dangerous and really hard, but mostly due to peculiarities of a low-altitude night flight, and they wasn't even required to hit the targets - their task was to make as many sorties and drop as many bombs as close to enemy positions as it's possible in order to harass the enemies and deprive them from sleep, and even though they proved to hit the targets quite a lot, that was more like a pleasant bonus since there was only so much damage they could've made with a payload available.
You can tell the command had a quite faith in them, considering every plane, every fuel gallon and every bomb counted in such a dire situation that even young girls had to take the fight.

It was just as bad back then. Not the people but the system and their leaders.
