Hey Chief. Just to put this story in perspective, this story is now truly history. The last Night Witch passed away in 2017. May they, and their story, never be forgotten. (' ')7 Edit: Chief, a couple of things: 1) The Night Witches didn't fly in the victory parade after the war because it would have caused the newer planes to stall, due to the stall speeds of the newer planes being above the maximum airspeed of the PO-2 plane that the Night Witches used. 2) The Commandant went out and looked for the crash sites due to Russian military protocols not awarding servicemembers their service awards and medals if the servicemember being given the award was only MIA (Missing In Action). This was due, in part, to Stalin's distrust of the West, as well as not knowing if the military member in question was actually dead, being KIA (Killed In Action) or had defected or deserted. As a result of this, the Commandant of the 588th went out and found every site and documented it. She not only made this story one of the most provable, but she ensured that every one of her downed pilots and navigators got every award they were due for their military service.

I remember an interview with one of the surviving Night Witches. She said that if you dug your finger in the plane, the cloth would rip. It was that flimsy. She was proud of the title Night Witch. She also spoke fondly of a girl who survived seven flights out. Queens. Every single one of them.
that flimsiness likely saved her life on multiple occasions, the hollow canvas wings were too weak to detonate explosive anti-aircraft ammo rounds, the rounds would tear through without exploding most of the time leaving the plane almost entirely intact unless they hit a wooden framing strut on the way through. had the Nacht-Hexen been flying modernized(by WWII standards) planes with rigid metal wing structure, that tiny thumbhole in the canvas wing might represent a shot that could have severed your wing entirely and potentially sent fragments of shrapnel peppering the side of your cockpit if you were in a flying tin can. i just love the fact that for all the 3rd Reich's bluster and posturing, the thing that terrified them the most wasn't the US Marines, wasn't British SAS, wasn't the -40 temperatures in russia in winter or the sheer size of the tank battalion at Kursk, etc., it was a bunch of housewives and college girls in saggy pants and oversized bucketboots who were bombing them from and at times literally chucking stick grenades out of cropdusters so old they might have been gliders borrowed straight from the Wright Brothers Museum. and keep in mind germany had already earned the reputation for it's engineering and it's efficiency even by this time, and were now on a total power kick. as far as the Reich's collective ego was concerned, the Nightwitches were the equivalent of having a gang of small children wearing propeller hats and riding on tricycles pull up to a Panzer tank out of nowhere, pelt it with molotov cocktails disabling it, call it stoopidhead, and then ride away ringing the tricycle bell on the handlebars.
My junior was 12 when I showed her this animation. She just started learning English, so she watched it with Russian subs. And if she was childishly skeptic in the beginning, her eyes produced the unstoppable tears at the end of story.
I just love this one. When I showed it to my daughter, I took advantage of a few moments of female bonding to reinforce her inner strength. There is nothing she can't do, and I never want her to let anyone tell her otherwise.

The Germans nicknamed them the Nachthexen, or “night witches,” because the whooshing noise their wooden planes made resembled that of a sweeping broom. That sound was the only warning the Germans had. The planes were too small to show up on radar or on infrared locators." This is who a strong independent woman role model should be.
In percentages: every sixth Night Swallow (Russian name for these women) was awarded with the Hero of Soviet Union golden star. Regular army had about 8000:1 ratio of such award (only every 8000th soldier was rewarded so high).
When my niece gets to be a bit older, I plan on showing her this video -- just to show her that no matter what, if you're determined enough, there is nothing you can't do. And what makes this story so good for me is, that in everything I've ever read, I've never thought that women weren't strong warfighters. And if Israel is any indication, women can be more savage a fighter than men.
Joakim is a great frontman for Sabaton. I'm going to see them with Judas Priest on October 6 in LA. Can't wait! This will be my 2nd Sabaton concert, and this time I am taking my 12 & 13 year olds. This will be their first real concert ever. 🤘😁

I love this song and loved you reaction! I have so, so much respect for those women. I would have never been able to do it... As a remark because they were surprised that their opponents were women: sadly it is still to this day, as a woman you are underestimated, underappreciated in Society. Overheard, overlooked, made fun of, not taken seriously.. especially when you are small.. it sometimes is very hard to deal with.
i have known many small women i myself am i large man (6'+ and over 300lbs) and i learned very early on never to underestimate small women i know i'm not the norm but i just want you to know that there are men out there who know you can do great things if you put your mind to it
