@@Cryscorde yes, Lego has Incredible precision for their pieces. Currently there are no available 3D printers that can replicate that precision.
@@parkcs7529 I own 2 dlp printers, the precision is quite great comparing to the stock lego. However, it is obvious that the sturdiness of it can't be replicated for sure.

I think the nautilus gears could be used for an axe mechanism on a combat robot. The variable gear ratio could be used to overcome the initial inertia to get the axe moving, then accelerate it faster and faster before impact.

Umm. They scale to a 1 to 1 ratio. yes the force is higher ifyou drive it starting from the gear meshing from the small end but there isn't any sort of "gearability" (if that makes sense) to increase its lift capacity. Plus it would have to be metal if its going to be a sturdy, long lasting robot.

Angus, rewatching this video after a couple of years makes me think of when I first learned about 3d printing. I just want to say that your channel has been a big inspiration to me becoming a mechanical engineering student, and even in high school I looked to your videos to troubleshoot my school's printers, find cool prints, and help build our local makerspace. I really look forward to see what you come out with next.
Fantastic showcase Angus. The Nautilus Gears were one of my very early prints and I was so happy when it turned out perfectly. Since then I've printed most of the models here, yeah gears fascinate me too. Those I haven't printed yet are definitely on my 'to print' list.

I want to make sure emmett gets (another) shout-out for the original Iris Box design. My design is a little smaller, and a little easier to print, but the insane mechanism design was all his. He even gave me some advise on my re-mix.

I’M FINALLY GETTING A PRINTER!!!
I’m SOOO exited. My first idea was to make a clip on my phone case for custom attachments.
One of the first things I ever printed was Emmett's gear cube. A couple of things to note, this comes with different files with differing ratios of teeth. Also, after several attempts with different lubricants, I found that good ole Vaseline works wonders. It keeps the cube from making a squeaking noise when rotated. Simply apply to the pins and you are good to go!
Polyalchemy sure make some stunning filaments! That's one of the coolest purple PLAs I've ever seen.
I printed Emmett's gear heart. Very impressed! It was hard to turn for a while but the more I turned it and wore the gears in now it spins pretty effortlessly

That gear cube is relatively popular in the cubing community. It’s called a gear shift and usually comes black with stickers of different colors on each side.

That iris box is the coolest thing ever! I've always wanted something cool like that, and it almost reminds me of "the eye" from steampunk tower. And the gear cube is even cooler!

I printed the Iris box back in 2016 and took it to every maker faire ever since...people are always stunend by it!

Great video! When I was working at as technician at Texas Instruments and I guess before steppers were cheap, there was a tool that would inspect the four sides of an PLCC IC and it used the geneva mechanism to orient each of the four side towards the inspection camera.
I think the last model was based off of oskar van daventer's gear shift puzzle

Nah. Golden ratio is less rational. Shame about the name but its got the best repeated fraction. Root 2 has the history but its repeated expansion kinda sucks.

bryan De Zeeuw the gear shift has a slightly different mechanism allowing you to pull two halves apart removing that set from the meshed gears.
I printed the cube gear last night. I pit a little grease on the pins to make it spin smoother. Definitely one of the coolest things I've printed

Have to admit I use three of those to show off my printer a LOT (Nautilus gears, gear bearing and the classic cube gear).
As a steampunk magician I forsee the iris box being used to present a few tricks so thank you for bring it to the forefront.

I've been printed the HELLRAISER gear cube I don't know how many times. People just love it, and considering the HELLRAISER cube does transform in the movie, that adds an extra layer of coolness to it. Thanks to the two people who made this model a reality. :)

I just 3dprinted the gear cube. It is sooo awesome! Well worth the waiting. I had 3 failprints, bad bed ethetion... even my rafts failed. But it moves so awesome!! If you want to make the gear cube: download the updated version! Sand the pins and use some oil in the holes. It will be fine.

Love the Geneva mechanisms... I printed a card box for my daughter's Magic the Gathering cards, and in the lid I made a 0 to 39 counter using a Maltese Cross design. Of course, now she needs one that can do larger numbers, so back to the drawing board.

Angus Cos hey I am from Sydney Australia. I was like you and didn’t know what printer to get. I went with the JGaurira A5 from LightInTheBox. Must say it’s such a great printer and LightInTheBox sent it out with in a week and got it within 3 weeks of purchase. Anyway good luck with your decision

I have a Cocoon Create Touch. If you can get your paws on one they are a decent printer for the price and you learn so much about printing with it.
Dont buy the Tevo Tornado. I bought it and its needs to much tuning to suceed a decent print.
If you dont mind spending money a Ultimaker would really blow your mind.
If thats too expensive you should buy a Prusa i3 mk3 (or another version)
If thats too expensive too I would recommend a Chinese printer and buy the Cr-10(s) or JGAurora A5

Best results you will get from the Ultimaker(5).
Dont buy a SLA printer for the first one
Just to confuse the issue - my Tornado worked out the box and and as my first 3D printer I couldn't be happier.
Really decent community of people to help you tinker with it as well (I'm drawing a line between tuning and tinkering) as well.
However, I'll agree some people have had a bit less luck. CR10(s) was what I'd settled on - but Tornado is significantly cheaper if you can grab a sale and has better mains-powered bed (so trade those points off against maybe needing to adjust on arrival).
Maybe other advantage is new Tornados come with Makerbase Gen-L board - I didn't get one, but bought one for about $15 and then maybe $25 for a set of TMC stepper drivers which I'm going to have a play with over the weekend...
...maybe the problem is defining what's meant by a "starter printer". Do you want to just print something - or have a hankering to learn to compile some Arduino firmware and build your own DuPont connectors?
Personally I think the important thing is just to pull the trigger and get yourself a nice cheap Chinese model.
You'll learn a lot and whatever you buy you'll:
1) Decide whether or not printing is for you
2) If 1=Love, then decide you need a better printer. Then you can embark upon the eternal question of whether to buy yet more bits to swear at as they initially don't work - or just bite the bullet and get a Prusa (which as far as I can see is universally accepted as the best value printer in existence).

I would recommend the MOD-t, but New Matter went out of business. I picked up how to use it in a day or two and now I'm the most knowledgable 3D printer guy at my school.
Dang, and I just ordered a Creality Ender 3
MOD-t has no weird issues that other printers have. The head is extremely stable and fixed in place, the bed just moves to print. It doesn't have a huge print area but it's reliable.

It looks like you use rafts for most of these. Is that your recommendation?
I printed many of them on the Cetus Mk2, which has a rough print surface and really needs a raft. You don't need it for any of them except maybe the Gear Bearing if you have trouble.
I’ve got an Anet A8 with a glass bed. I guess it’s time for trial and error.
Eric Ka I also have an Anet A8 with a glass bed, and I have spent a good deal of time getting it tuned perfectly. It has a few of the standard mods such as frame stiffeners and belt tensioners. I have successfully printed all of these models without rafts. It took me 4 attempts at the iris to finally get one that worked, probably because I was using a cheap PLA. But hey, it worked! And who says you can't get great prints with an A8? Rubbish!

Geometric vases are my favorite quick, unfailable, demo prints as you can get a fairly large print in half an hour. Specially around xmas where the can server as decorative bulbs that can slip over standard mini lights, just print in something at least semi-translucent.

I printed the iris when I bought my new Aldi printer (the most recent batch). Works like a charm, first attempt.

Great selection of mechanical prints Angus. The gear cube has been a favourite with visiors, its eye catching on the shelf and they grab it and soon after exclaim "no way!" or "holy sh*t!" when it moves. Add a small amount of Super Lube or dry PTFE lube when you assemble, spining parts to ensure lube spreads and print imperfections get smoothed.
Apart from being just cool these designs showcase how possible it is to take constant rotation and apply it in a different direction or different way. Good for sparking ideas and for designing practical builds like tracking mounts for photography, astronomy, solar projects for starters.

It's amazing to see people amazed by the Geneva mechanism. Other mechanisms are interesting as 3D printable toys, but the Geneva mechanism could very well be built with a wood panel and common power-tools. It has been used in the industrial worlds for more than a century, now.

Sounds cool! What kind of filament do you use? Do you need a special printer for that?
I just use PLA. It prints out joints, but the PLA itself isn’t flexible. They make nice gifts and toys for my nephews.

I printed the iris box a long time ago when I worked in IT for a school district. Now that I own a 3D printer, I can print one and take it apart to see how it is made.
