this got me through my boring day"s on a £25 a week yts scheme, as a 17 year old. this, the cure, echo and the bunnymen ,depeche mode on my walkman. good day"s christine.
I was not long out of the £25 a week humdrum you speak of Peter, though I was a YOP(just prior to YTS). Local Palais material as you say, Cure, Echo, DM, early Minds and this gem. Not forgot you Christine Pyke...fully agree.
what career did fall into after your yop, i joined the army to get out of this country and the 3 million long dole queue, i must be the only person to look forward to a tour of northern ireland.
First heard decades ago, on original release. Absolutely brilliant, surprising, energising, emotional, exciting - and I still think that whenever I hear it now, 40 years later, which is quite often as I have copies and it also plays on my 'head radio' quite frequently as well as being on pretty mcuh ever mixtape I've made since then. A genuinely remarkble, clever and creative record, and it disappoints me that no-one involved really benefitted from it. And this isn't just misplaced sentiment for 'when I was young' either - I was in my thirties and a serious jazz and blues fan.
Remember hearing this at The Dirtbox in London and Bournemouth with Dirtbox Phil so many great memories with some truly great friends...but lost touch with a lot of them, some gone but never forgotten, some well and truly forgotten and the others not sure where they are in the world. Healthy, safe and well I hope, God bless n one love
The epitome of ‘cool’. How this never got to no. 1, I have never understood. Takes me back to Oxfam suits and the same feeling I got from early Roxy. When rooting through my vinyl I always grab it. Great tune, great vid👌
But did you have the what became the indie obligatory working man tweed/posh dead bloke whose relieved wife is happily donating everything he owned to Barrnados all purpose overcoat? Me too.😅
@@simonpeach1705 Oh, yes! What got me was the dry cleaning cost more than the jacket or coat 😂. But the great thing was, the Pringle Boys just did not get it 👍
When Morrissey was a guest reviewer in Mojo magazine for the new single releases back in '84 this was the only record he had anything positive to say about, describing it as 'moderately listenable'. Well that's as good a compliment as you're ever gonna get from Mozza.
God bless Google & TH-cam!! This song completely passed my by in the 80s - and I was supposedly 'into' this sort of stuff. Then, a couple of years ago, a mate in work gave me the 'Edge of the 80s' CD, but it wasn't until last week that I put disc 2 in my car CD player. When this track came on I thought WTF??!! I am now completely hooked on it and have to listen to it at least once during every car journey.
O M G, this is exactly the same story as me. I was 24 when this came out and going clubbing every weekend, but for some reason this one escaped me. I,m guessing I must have heard it once or twice ,but never enough for it to sink in. Like you I discovered it again a few years ago on Edge of the 80s CD. I literally could not believe how good it is and that it was like a new song to me. Amazing !!
I still ADORE Swansway... back then, I wanted to look like Maggie and sleep with Robert Shaw. I thought they were quite the two most beautiful creatures that graced this planet. Cherry Pop should have done something really big THIS year, trying to get a massive hype going, since it's been 100 years since Marcel Proust published his "À la recherche du temps perdu"...
I was 17 and was amazing time, feel privileged to have lived those times. Would go back in a heartbeat to make sure I realised how good it was and warn people how bad life is now❤
2021 we are on our own soul train , you rock everyone, Love always wins , Thankyou everyone of you beautiful people 💓🌹🌸🥰🌼💕😘😂🥂🌱😝😍🙂🙃🌼and yes you are strong enough xxxx
This band had some set of horns. For an eighties band surrounded by other bands and their cold synths they cooked hot instead -- with a great jazz groove with wonderful arrangements. They deserved better. They were exciting, different and tight. Overlapping vocals that were brilliant. Call and response. If remember the lp jacket credits there were many members who made this happen. The extended remix is even hotter than this.
This used to terrify me when I heard it, I always imagined being lost at an abandoned train station in the middle of the night when hearing it. Traumatised me for years.
I have absolutely loved 'Soul Train' since first hearing it in 1984. genuinley brilliant one-off creation, like nothing else then or now. It appears on my head-radio quite regularly. The album doesn't - can't - compete, but I'd recommend a listen to any Soul Train as you might get something I don't. This single is a perfect example of the possibility of a one-off genius moment - I'm still hoping for mine....
I REMEMBER GOING TO A RECORD SHOP IN DUNDEE IN1984 SITTING ALL DAY WITH TEN PALS BUT THEY DIDNT SHOW UP I LIVED IN THE CITY CENRE AT THE TIME SO WE ALL GOT DRUNK X
Am 66 now, retired merchant navy seadog..1 st heard this in a Peterhead bar back in 1984...timeless track..
This has a bleak intensity to it that is quite splendid.
With you there..I'm 60 and this still calls me.
Very few hit songs are completely unique, but this really is. Just astonishingly good.
+Dan Hunter totally agree..I've still got it on the original 7in vinyl :)
I too miss this kind of individuality.

Same! Loved them ever since I first saw them on tv. Gutted to never see them live as I was under 18 and looked about 12!

Still on the Soul Train in 2020

Not by me its not!
I remember Tony Wilson plugging this song years ago and thought it was brilliant !!!
Took me a few hours tonight to find it and it was worth it :)
Love this ever since I first heard it in the 80's
Saw them in concert in Hull back in the 80s. Managed to meet them afterwards too.
I have this single, but it at the time of release. Not heard it for years.
I love this song I can play it over and over.
I remember this coming out of nowhere back in early 1984. Great little song.
Remember this playing constantly at home eldest brothers were big fans have to say class song biblical
Such a shame there's absolutely nothing by this fine band on Spotify.
So a head of its time pure class
So cool, i just stumbled on this band very impressive gutted i missed them in the eighties but im now a fan!!
wow, blown away again (30 years after the 1st time!), fantastic song!

Brilliant, but sadly very short-lived 😙

Takes me back to the 80's. When I was thinner, had more hair and probably more wise.🤔
Ian James I'm agreeing with all of that

I danced to this at chicos 7,on Saturday night in Hanley, just brilliant .......
1984, such great, unique, music.
When you think you have heard everything from the early 80s, you find one you somehow missed.
A great song. The 12" version is even better. More visceral, somehow.
Great song and a pretty unique sound
i had the 12" of this, played it to death. Got to have one of the best arrangements going, so much stuff happening , full of atmosphere and hope.
So did me big brother, i played it LOUD every time he stepped out the door. Classic vinyl.
Wonderful Song.

A great tune... girlfriends come and go but the music stays.😊
Classic 80s.sauve and sophisticated
Brilliant..then they move on to form Scarlet fantastic..No memory
I'd forgotten that one but then remembered the lady band member in both videos.
Cool classic this is
This was so classy in 84, I was 18, and would glam up in 40s dresses (Yes, vintage was a thing then too) and dance away at ‘alternative’ club nights
You too ...!
Best 80's tune ever
Never forget this track. Think I have it on tape somewhere. Probably from a John Peel session.
Rather brilliant.
Has stayed with me since I first heard it, I think on the tube.

I saw them all over Birmingham including one gig at the Opposite Lock club where some punters attacked the band
Yes!! I was gutted I couldn’t go! 😩
I love the song, I really do but someone once told me the lyrics were "smells like pee on the soul train"
...and now that's all I can hear!
Great little number from this time, a shame they never followed it up with anything quite as memorable thereafter!
