This is the version that was on The Tube (circa 1983 I'd guess) - by far the best version, open and atmospheric. When it was decided to release it as a single, some arse stepped in and grossly overproduced it. Can't beat this version imo. Incidentally, it was on TT the same night as Naughty Miranda, another brilliant track (Indians in Moscow) - was on TH-cam too, not sure if it still is though.
I fully agree, the Tube versions of this & No Memory were light years ahead of the versions on 7" single. Both have a simplicity that is both haunting and atmospheric and truly great pieces of music in their own right. Why not join me in badgering Maggie De Monde on Facebook to release both these tracks in stereo for even better enjoyment for us fans. Yes I'm at it again Maggie if your reading this!!
Searched for this song for years until youtube! Thanks for thr memories & i agree it should be re released very underated at the time absoutley super song!
At last. I think this band were from my home town of Birmingham (England) and the tenuous link is that there is an area of my city called "Swann's way", it's actually a run down shopping centre. Apparantly the lead singer can still be found knocking around the city centre................
I remember this...I think these lot are from my hometown, Birmingham (UK). I know that the group's name derives from a book, but spookily enough we have a hideous shopping centre also called Swann's way!!!!!
@olsenal I understand this "song" was used in the torture procedure on the prisoners of war at Git'mo in order to make them talk and ratt out their fellow insurgents. The Git'mo prisoners were real tough guys. Whereas my ears began to bleed @ the 2 minute point, the Git'mo prisoners' ears began to bleed at the 3 minute mark but the prisoners were on perpetual loop on this song. This was subjecting them to the Burka Burka Blue video here on YourTube...
this song means so much to me . my first taste of indie..so glad your on youtube love it , go t the respect you deserve.....ingnore the cheeky comments love you deeply xx
gutted, gutted, understatment of the year mate, 12 in picture cover with exstended b side, GIT ill find him ,still good to hear it again..noiseovshadow
@olsenal I LVOE my SpiderDog. I even drive around town with a "I [heart] my dog... i [spade] my dog" bumpersticker. I wouldn't subject him to something SpiderDog found annoying or painful. It dawned on me that SpiderDog wasn't just howling at Soul Train. He often howls just to match the tone of a singer's voice. I let me outside as soon as I realized he wasn't digging the tune. SpiderDog is back from the doggy-wash, all clean and satisfied...
This video is part of the chain of evidence that Brittain's Got Talent, not with Swansway, but long ago with The Beatles (The Ruttles? haha) , and then Brittain had no talent for oh, 3, 4 decades or so , and then Brittain Got It's Talent Back when Susan Boyle showed up on the scene, along with The Cheeky Monkeys dance team, and sweet little Connie Talbot.
@olsenal The only reason I showed up again on this page is because of your non-response below; you replied but without a comment. And, like bearing witness to a train-wreck, I COULD NOT pull myself away from the dog-howl of a song. I am not a masochist. It is not a habit in any case. YOU were the person who brought me back to suffer here haha I DID NOT subject SpiderDog to this clip a 2nd time; SpiderDog was at the doggy-wash, getting a little "how's your father" by the doggy-wash-person.
@DancingSpiderman ..i so glad you didnt like it,this to me means that you wasted 3.01 minutes of your already dwindling time left on our planet,i do hope you find so much more in this vein.
I think Mr @osenal has issues with a great singing voice and musicians who can actually play instruments... This is a refreshing and beautiful track....try not to be so narrow minded and, perhaps a little too judge mental. He is however, a Dog lover so we will let it go....peace and harmony Brother...peace and harmony
@LRon2009 Just so long as the vein you are refering to is a Blue Vein. BWAAhahaha. As for this vid... harrumph... "Performance Art Students" *sigh* My dogs ears began to bleed at the 1 minute mark. My ears began to bleed at 2 minutes. English white boy fail. It's a Fail Blog video now. Have a great day, LRon2009 !
@DancingSpiderman I think you must be a masochist, you told us all this tune made your ears bleed when you heard it 2 years ago and here you are back on the page again ! but hey thats o.k. whatever turns you on ! but why subject your poor old dog to it as well! ?
Nice to see Maggi di Monde in her pre-Scarlet Fantastic days. This vid was the one made for the Tube in 1984 - definitely a weaker version of the song than the single release
As already noted by several others and myself... this version is open and atmospheric, alongside which the single was (sadly) overproduced and lost 'something' in translation. ATB, Mel Cornwell
where the fuk is the 12" version ? i had it and deleted it by mistake now cant get it *Boooo hoooo* not being flippant i really want the 12" version anybody got any info, dont wanna spend money cos im a tight bassa
@DancingSpiderman I think you are being economical with the truth. You actually turned up on the page 1 month ago to have a rant at Lron2009 about it and have come back even after my" reply without a comment" just to have a dig. You really didnt have to let your dog listen to it for all that time but I think its more sinister than that, I reckon your dog was probably wearing an orange suit at the time as well. Shame on you !
Absolute bloody CLASSIC!!!
Saw this on the tube, loved it then, still awesome today. Thanks for posting it

I love this record - remember watching this on The Tube at Poly in '83/84. Almost timeless
This was constantly on my Walkman back in the day alongside The Smiths and Wayne Smith on a homemade mixtape...happy times!
dont you just love youtube. and find theses jems you havnt heard for years
Searched for this song for years until youtube! Thanks for thr memories & i agree it should be re released very underated at the time absoutley super song!
We used this song for a fashion show we did in 1980-something - very cutting edge - still holds its own in 2009 xx
I seen these at the tube in Newcastle early 80s
I believe I first saw that on The Tube, way back when
loved this band saw them live twice - fantastic! didn't think i would find this thanks
Love this track. Bought the vinyl at the time & it's always been one of my favourite underrated singles.
Thanks TH-cam. Been searching for this for a long time...
This endures. Still listen to it often (on Vinyl) Thanks for posting.
Wow!! I almost didn't bother searching for this, thought there was no chance. My vinyl copy got broken over 20 years ago. Awesome....
Wow...strange but familiar...the soundtrack to the endless metro ride to some part of the city you don't belong.
All time Fav, 12" was on constant repeat in my bedroom!
remember tapin this off the charts and lovin it...classic

Hi saw these live must be over 30 years ago in a small underground venue brilliant...im getting mature
Several versions about of this but this is the definitive one for me.
Still not quite sure about the behind-the-beat hi-hat though.
Found a 12" of this in a record shop yesterday.
The album is being re-released. Swans Way now have a FB page if you want to see what they are up to now

This is 1983,84 classic track!...I wonder what became of them?
Love this always
I remember this also 👍
It's like a drugged-out no-wave goth version of "With or Without You". Awesome.
@olsenal I LVOE my SpiderDog. I even drive around town with a "I [heart] my dog... i [spade] my dog" bumpersticker. I wouldn't subject him to something SpiderDog found annoying or painful. Yeah, it's live. And I have to say, I like this version better than the single!
Great song
The first few seconds - the cello intro - is the best bit - you missed it out!
Bloody love this track - just discovered it in an 80's comp... anyone know if the album is as good?
Jason Gibson ..The album is masterpiece.
I know someone else put this up recently, but it needed to be be done again, lest we forget.............:)

HiYa Robert, Mmwaah! lol x x
He looks like Begbie in Trainspotting ...scary as fuck

Far too good to last .
I have it on 12" vinyl and on LP.
I may be tempted to sell.
Any offers??

Oh god this is really quite bad! It should be used to get terrorist prisoners to talk over at Guano prison Cuba -- worse than waterboarding
