A pretty quick upload if I do say so myself :) No Jimbulus here, and 1 small note I'd like to mention. If there's 1 thing I wish i did a little differently in this one, its that my tone sometimes comes off as negative towards Gill's power level. He IS lower tier, but SFV is a relatively well balanced game and even though Gill is on the weaker end, he's certainly capable of performing well! If you came to the comments to call me a downplayer think of this as my apology lmao Otherwise, hope you enjoy the video!
*Lore Wise* Wonder how strong Gill is ? taking a "L" to SF "Triple H" cough : i mean Alex lol put Gill in a low ball Wall tier of strength. I figure Gill let Alex win in SF3
you know, i really appreciate how far fighting game design has gone a low tier in SFV is like "oh they can do some work, but they just can't force their gameplan as consistently as the high tiers" while a low tier in something like SF3 is 'he just don't feckin' work properly half the time"
It is truly fascinating to see how far fighting games have come, we've gone from low tiers being so poor that winning with them especially in tournament would be so miraculous it'd go down in fgc history to low tiers not necessarily being "bad" just more difficult to do well consistently with which is a massive improvement.
Gill was always my favorite character to play in SFV until Oro dropped, despite him having BY FAR the lowest win rate amongst all the characters I played. Glad to see my boy getting some well-deserved love
This is literally the type of video I wish 100 characters had, sometimes I will look up old fighting game characters to see how they work and there is NOTHING! I was ready to binge this series but I saw the previous video was a year ago nooooo!!!!! I loved the video!
i got sfv champion edition during the christmas sale this year and the first character i played was Gill because i was like "Oh he's the villian of Third Strike actually playable" and i fell in love, one of the fastest fighting games for me to find my main.
I only got into street fighter pretty recently via third strike on fightcade, and was curious what gill was like in the only other game he’s in. This is a really cool video! You explained both the character and SFV really well and I can really feel your passion for him. That parry is badass lmao
Gill is a character of extremes, which is one of the things that got him stuck with the "low tier" tag. He had to give up a lot in exchange for his big-boy damage: poor confirms off of his 3 frame light (I think the best he can do cLP -> cLP -> Light Lariat, but unfortunately I don't have SF5 currently installed to double check that), his cMK's cancel window being too short to hit confirm (in what was essentially "hit confirming off of your cMK, the game"), no invincible reversal, and in the final season being a character who has to compete for the same living space as Luke. That being said, when he *does* get a hit despite all the aforementioned shortcomings his opponent does just explode, especially if he's got meter to apply retribution. His parry can also throw a wrench in a lot of characters' frame traps: many of which rely on a 2 frame gap which is large enough for you to parry through and very few of them have a mid/low alternative with the same frame data to force you to guess in a way that doesn't leave them open to you pushing buttons. He also shares his brother Urien's raw lariat into V-Trigger for free plus frames tech. But none of that is *truly* important. What's important is that you get to do massive, swaggy combos that feel awesome to do in a game that just didn't have that kind of thing until the last 2 seasons.
Great video, always love to hear people talk about their favorite characters (also always glad to see SFV getting some love). One of my favorite details about SFV is how Gill and Alex interact uniquely with the system mechanics to carry a little bit of SFIII with them.
Great video! Gill was also one of my fav characters in SFV. I especially loved his ice vtrigger mixups. Sadly those became a lot less threatening when they introduced vshift, as that's just a get out of jail free card for those situations :(
I'm a Gill main, and I agree, the V-shift did give people a free escape. That's why I started spacing my ice traps after knock down depending on where I thought an opponent may try to shift out. It was hilarious watching them shift on wakeup thinking they were gonna escape the coming trap only to land in the trap.
I kept seeing your name around back during GGST tourneys since Jack-O' is my favourite FG character and I want to root and believe and in my bros (despite being more so a Xrd player). But other than playing just Guilty Gear I also got into SFV when 6 wasn't out yet and my main there was Gill. It's incredibly fascinating to me how our taste in character choices can be so similar. That we laser focus on who our mind finds the COOLEST, regardless of gender, regardless of tier lists, regardless of perceived difficulty barrier for learning whether it be floor or ceiling. Is it the most successful route to take? Probably not. But is it the most fulfilling when your hard work pays off? Absolutely!
I love these kinds of videos, fgc members just gushing over shit in the games they absolutely love or a character they find super interesting, it's always the most rewatchable content.
7:42 Nah, it is 2-frame startup. This is amazing if the opponent smash jabs you can punish him with big chunk of damge. But the read part is the hardest
You know, I've just been getting into SFV and Gill caught my eye. Thought I'd learn some other characters before learning him though because he seems pretty tricky as it stands.
Whilst he’s not my favourite (Seth takes that spot) Gill was insanely fun to just lab around and chill In general I love when a character FEELS like a boss character if they’re important or powerful in lore, it makes you feel awesome.
Gill was hyped up to be a next major Antagonist in SFV's story A Shadow Falls, and despite being eternally gratefup he made it into the game I feel like we never really got the dramatic story we deserved, and SF6 still hasn't either. Who knows, perhaps something is cooking on a slow burn, much like SFV Zangief V Dhalsim
I understand "loving" Gill in SFV so it's a pretty positive video, but his VS1 wasn't that great until the final few patches and his VT2 was always weak once you fought a player that understood how it worked. His 2F parries were very good, but because they were one of the fastest in the game (at 2 frames startup) it became a meme when discussing balance with anyone who only watched Gill highlights on twitter. His Crouch Heavy Punch also would trade at times to jump ins, so you'd have to be ready to convert off the trade if you didn't hit clean. Outside of all that, this was a good video. Though I'd hate to see him in SF6 because personally I think they'd ruin the character again. (P.S. - Just saw your pinned comment, I wouldn't call your video downplay material lol)
rooflemonger is just a content farming clown, I don't see why you have to change things to accommodate him. Even if the series' names were similar the difference in quality coming from effort + actually knowing what you are talking about would be enough to distinguish yours from his. Great vid btw, we're revisiting sfv as the sidegame in our weeklies this month and now I'm considering labbing some GIll to surprise the boys.
Considering most frame traps in SF5 had a 2 frame gap, that was huge for Gill's ability to defuse pressure. Like, if I'm Juri going for my standard 5MP -> 5MK pressure that's an easy parry window for Gill meaning that I have to instead change the frame trap to 5MP -> 2MK which I get basically nothing off of.
Late SFV was goated with Rose, Oro, Akira, Seth and a bunch of other characters being so fun until Luke came of course, bruh when are we deleting that disease of a character 😂
Man as much as people shit on sf5 I feel like the characters are what really made the gane interesting. In my opinion, I find sf6 a not very good/fun game mainly because there are not any cool characters. Dunno if it's a hot take or not 😅

@@the_big_bad_reaper what could they do with the low tiers in 5 to put them better in line with the rest of the cast
@@ri_c_ebuff them lol

Nemo Gill is a work of art 👌
yeah your right
and the 2and gill main muramasa was dope as well
Yep
I loved watching/playing Gill players. Once they had a groove, I’d be in my head like, “OK how’re you gonna convert this?🤔”

Gill's absolutely gorgeous. Honestly one of my favorite character designs ever. He's been my favorite since his debut.

For me my favorites character in sfv were akira with her air combos it was so cool to launch them in the air and just go wild on them

Can’t forget about the absolutely goated voice acting from Liam O Brian, easily my favorite part about Gill
I've little doubt that he won't return alongside the character but Liam absolutely needs to come back in SF6 when Gill gets added tbh
damn i hope they bring him back for sf6 he looks sick
@@OneCSeven i hope so aswell mate
"his anti-air damage is bar none the highest in the game", tengu
I loved Gill, winning with him was satisfying and Gill mirrors were sick!
I love that they kinda brought this back with Aki and her poison, it would be a waste of such a cool mechanic.
Great job at the cold shouldah clash! It looked like a tough gig but was a ton of fun to watch!
Glad to see my favorite character and main covered

Btw if the opponent get stunned during freeze their life bar gets drained after they get frozen to the ground
Still my favorite boss in the franchise. Bison and Seth can kick rocks.

Iirc his parry is active on frame 2 not 3
Im 85% sure youre right
Just saw on supercombo:
The first parry has a 2 frame start up, but any successful parry after the first has a 3 frame startup.
Correct, my apologies. I had gotten it mixed up with Gill's fastest mash, c.lp, which is 3f startup IIRC
7:42
Nah, it is 2-frame startup.
This is amazing if the opponent smash jabs you can punish him with big chunk of damge.

I don't know which opinon author has about G from SFV but DAMN - i would love to see a similar video about him. This is so interesting to watch
i think this is my favourite video you’ve produced, i would love to see more like it if it was fun to make.
Thanks. Gill is awesome
You know, I've just been getting into SFV and Gill caught my eye. Thought I'd learn some other characters before learning him though because he seems pretty tricky as it stands.
Gill is my favorite character ever since street fighter 3rd strike because I love his gameplay and theme song.

He was hyped up because canonically SF3 comes right after SFV. He was the next big villain. And since he's still alive, he could return in 6 as well.
More like why I love Eddie
I like the subconscious messaging to make me want to watch infiltration vs fujimura
Great video!!
i wish they put him in to street fighter 6 i love gill
Gill and Alex made SFV for me. If it wasn't for those two, I might've never touched the game.
If you like Gill this much then I wonder how you feel about Aki seeing as her poison mechanic works similarly to Gills fire and ice
Now im interested in your thoughts on aki in sf6
gotta look up nemo gill combos. dude is nuts
