Congratulations on your escape from California. We moved out of the madness in 2004, and settled in the Utah Rockies. Never looked back. Have you thought of doing the Texas 200?
I'd be open to doing that some day or there are also ones in the Everglades and I believe the Outer Banks too. But my main priority is to do some ocean passages after some tests in coastal waters.
I'd like that! You got any idea where I could park my car/trailer if I wanted to set out on some adventure for a week or two? That's one obstacle I have to figure out.
I rebuilt my sailboat (Albin Vega 27) to a live-aboard bugout survival pod that can stay out at sea self-sufficient for up to 10 years if needed. My yearly cost of living is down to $3500. I sold everything bought the boat and rebuilt it for $8000. My land vehicle is a CT 125, that's all I need. ⛵🎣🛵
I lived in Raleigh for 12 years. Loved it. You will experience tough ice storms, so be prepared for a week at time without power and being unable to drive. I also lived through 3 hurricanes, Fran being the worst. You need a chain saw and a generator. Boat building tradition lives on in Beaufort.
Thanks. Are you in Beaufort? I've been through quite a few hurricanes. I experienced some strong ice storms when I lived in Kansas City. Hopefully I'm spared of power outages for that long around here.
Wishing youand the family the best. Will continue to follow you and look forward to your sailing adventures! Calif is getting very expensive and I have family wanting me to move back East. Take care.
Welcome back to the east coast! I am sure you will find lots of help and get to meet new friends. Praying your wife and kids get settled in after such a big change.
Glad to see you back, your project inspired me to start making an ocean capable powerboat which I plan to start this year or early next year. It will also be the premiere of my YT channel.
Wow! I’ve been following your build from the start, and it’s been an awesome project to follow. I live i Sweden, but in the 70’s we lived in Durham. Loved NC a lot 👍🏻 Hope you will too. Cheers Peter
Wow. A cross continental move dude. I wish you and your family best of fortune in NC. 2 hours to the beach is not insurmountable. I live in Barrie Ontario. Your boat could reach here. I look forward to your Atlantic adventures!🎉
Have heard rumors that there really is life outside California. Glad to see them confirmed and that the move was a success. Hope you're able to complete the boat in time for a rendezvous with Yann Quenet. Have you thought of a name for her?
Start acclimating and living like a sailor. Build out your bedroom with a swinging bed platform that is operated by motors for sea sickness movements. Also have stereo set on high with banging ,clanging and slapping of waves recorded. Have wife and kids at all times of the night gently pull on you from different angles throughout the night. Try sleeping in these conditions and to see if you relish it lol.
Well, I'm bummed that this reduces the chances that I'll get to meet you, but I wish you the best. San Diego is a nice place to visit but I dont see how anyone can live there. Too crowded for me. I definitely prefer northern CA and more trees. Forget warm ocean water, though. P.s. it's Vicksburg Mississipi, not Missouri. My parents grew up about 20 miles west of there in Tallulah, LA.
Yes I used to live in Missouri so I guess it was just in my head, woops😅. I did write Mississippi on the screen though as a correction. I'm sure we can meet some day. Thanks for the comment.
Coming about, change of course. Nice tack. I lived most of my life in California but now find it less desirable. I hope the schools are good for your kids.
Hi captain Parry it's me again,, I would like to know if I use large rubber on my flat bottom boat that I installed to build, can this rudder provide lateral resistance and improve upwind performance without using any keel or centre board or Lee boar?
You should discuss with a naval architect like Jérôme Delaunay. He has more knowledge in these matters. Check out the Paradox sailboat which uses no keel, just chine runners. Maybe this kind of solution would work for you if you don't want a keel or centerboard. The flat, more vertical sides also help, kind of acting like a keel to stop the boat from slipping sideways.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat thanks, I appreciate for the information, if you come to Europe please come to visit us, I and my wife living on a dufour 2800 in Netherlands at the moment we will be sailing to France there is a place in west coast of France a boat yard that we can rent workshop for building boat, Wil be happy to meet you anywhere in Europe, hope to see you sailing the OCAS.
hi captain Parry. If the price of cedar wood cheeper than divinycell, should I build my boat with cedar wood? Is it the boat will be still as strong as divinycell of same thickness?
Both options are very strong, the choice you are making is heavy vs light, cheap vs expensive, and potential to rot vs no chance of rot. I would use the foam to save on weight and keep from having to worry about water getting in and rotting the wood.
Following your channel for a while now and really love your concept and I'm aĺlways curious how you are progressing. However, I didn't realize before that your cockpit floor is forward faced. Wouldn't it be better to have it otherway round to improve water rinsing off. As I know everything you do is well thought throigh, what is the rationale for this design?
Well I think that the upside of the east coast is that there is a better variety of sailing opportunities, especially if you can trailer the boat to places like Georgia and Florida. 🇦🇼👍
hi Perry, we are planning to build a 6 meter long and 1.6 mere wide flat bottom sailing boat in west cost of france, the boat is a scow bow rectangular shape like a barge, i just have question about the rocker in the aft section of the boat , is it necessary to add a rocker in the aft section of the boat? the boat will have closed cockpit in the back aft of the boat, best regard
6 meters, this will take a lot of time and money so you better get the advice of a real naval architect or buy some cheap plans and at least use them to refer to what kind of rocker she needs, if you don't want to follow the plans exactly. I took an existing design and modified it to my liking. Maybe check out the Mizar 650 on nautline website.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat thanks for the advice, i do fallow some of the existing plants like the scow 420 barge and the Jangada and Oz goose,. The boat I designed based on this three models,. It looks sound a big project but it is very simple design, I was looking for a simplest shape to build a boat, the boat is a rectangular box with rocker from the bow to stern, the width of the boat is the same from bow to stern, the boat has a cabin relatively high which helps the boat not to stay upside down and hopefully self right, thanks for the recommendation.
I really like the Oz Goose and would like to build one some day. It's a very simple and successful design. If you took a lot of inspiration from it, your boat's shape will probably serve you well.
what thickness of divinycell would you recommend for the bottom of my flat bottom boat? the with of the boat is 1.6 meter, and what thickness of divinycell for the bulkheads? best regard.
We'll miss you here! But I get it- it's nearly impossible to afford a place to work on the boat. You had a good run in your garage in SD- I'm surprised the HOA didn't get you!
I've never been to the USA but from what I've heard moving from California sounds like a good idea. IIRC Dave and Mindy Bolduc live in NC with their collection of Matt Leyden boats. Your boat is looking great. I hope you can meet with Yann.

How you find the time, energy and self-permission is a mystery to me. That's quite the juggling act you've got going there! BTW, how many hours a week DO you put into the boat on average?
I was worried that you had given up! Glad it was just a MINOR life adjustment!! Regards.
Yes, you know, just a little... 2,600 mile move. 😂

Bonjour Captain Perry, do you think the plans of the marvellous OCSS will be available, one day? Cheers from french Mediterranean coast!

Then you go and mention Cape Fear !!!
Fantastic! Glad your familiy's move went well. Can't wait to see you and Captain Yann together comparing notes. 👍
Captain, I live in Charlotte. I may finally get a chance to meet you. Tommy

Nice to meet you. I hope you and your boats fared alright with the hurricanes this season.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat so far so good... If the water got any higher I was going to have to flip it over!!!

It's definitely the more north one.
Welcome back to the East Coast, Capt. Perry! Hope you're able to orchestrate the meet-up. That would be an awesome way to showcase that build. 👍

Maybe it was just the camera angle playing tricks on you. If you put a ball anywhere on the aft deck, it will roll right off the transom.
