Hate to be that guy, but Lawnmower Blennys are actually NOT herbivores. They are considered detritivores which eat dead and decomposing organic matter. These guys do love algae, and it is an essential part of their diet, but they will eat left over food and even other fish feces as well.
We love our lawnmower blenny. When he eats algae from the glass he looks like Homer Simpson munching on a donuts so we named him "Munch". The most amazing thing about lawnmower blennies is watching them change colors. I don't know why this is never mentioned on websites about them. When on the sand, he turns a very light sandy color. When he perches on dark green live rock, he changes dark green to match. The little bumps and whiskers on his face mimic the texture of live rock and he can be invisible at times. We've had him for about six months. Although he does eat nuisance algae he really loves frozen brine shrimp. He'll grab a bunch and drag it down to the bottom. This works out really well for our cardinal fish who is too shy to go to the surface to eat the shrimp. Munch spends most of the day patrolling the bottom of the tank.
thank you for this comment. This is the first time I have heard this. I thought I was tripping because I swore he was changing colors.😅 Do you know if the colors of their eyes change? I feel like I have seen mine go from green to blue. I am not sure though. I love this fish. He has lots of personality.
@@RR-bd4jp our lawnmower blenny passed away. Since then we acquired a starry blenny which appears very similar. It also changes colors. It's most striking color pattern is a deep green fringed with white. We call it his frosty face because he looks like an old man with a beard covered in snow. His eyes are a bright red! But they do not change color.
Short, simple and to the point. I’ve been keeping fish for years and have had a couple of these guys in that time. Just got another one and really enjoyed this video. Thank you!
I remember my dad got one of these for his reef tank back in the day to help as a custodian. Certainly a face only a mother could love, but their personality makes them the best! He became one of my favorites, right next the dwarf flame angel ;)
Hey Brock is it normal for lawn mower blennies to attack Jawfish? I put a new tiger jawfish in my 55 gallon and my lawn mower blenny attacked it The jawfish is safe but he’s in the pistols shrimps/watchman goby/firegoby/ zebra dartfishes territory. Now I’m scared he’s gonna get shot. My pistol shrimp and yellow watchman share their cave with dartfish for some reason.
I went to a store and in a coral frag tank there was a massive one, about 5-6 inches and very fat. I think the sizes may depend on where they are from, and also some have a little brighter color than others, which I was very surprised with
Heidi's Fish Tank they’ll eat it too! I would recommend the lawnmower over them just because I’ve taken care of so many more of those than the tailspot 😊
Hello Brock, I’ve decided to set up a reef tank! It’s gonna be a 40 gallon and I was wondering if you could tell me if this stock would work out? Here it is: - Ocellaris Clownfish (2x) - Royal Gramma - Lubbock Fairy Wrasse - Algae Blenny - Yellow Watchman Goby & Tiger Pistol Shrimp (Pair) I really enjoy your videos and you are one of the reasons why I am setting up one. I’m 14 so I still have lots to learn lol
Chris Temple All those would be a great family of fish in your tank. I would recommend not adding all of them at the same time, to avoid a spike in the tank. Also don’t forget to do your water changes! You’re gunna have a great looking tank. Let me know if you ever have any more questions. 😄😄
They will in a big enough tank. The only time they would be aggressive toward each other is if one have territory claimed on a rock and the other swam near it.
They tend to be really shy when first introduced. When feeding, stay in front of the tank, it will help them come out more often and be comfortable when you are there.
Jimmy Ramey personally I’ve never seen one pick at them. BUT I have had other customers come and complain about their blenny nipping at their corals, but it was the bi color blenny.
Chris Beddows Tbh when we do sea horse tanks, it’s only sea horses. I’ve seen firefish do well with star fish. Lawnmower blennys are pretty calm, which is what sea horses are good with. You just don’t want someone to bully them.
named my little guy eugene, i loved his silly eyebrows 🥹 took real good care of my tank when i had him but the poop from this little guy?!?! holy wow batman, never again 😂😂

They are literally so amusing to me for no reason at all which makes it even funnier
At a local aquarium today, one came up to the tank glass and stared at me right in the eyes.
Jake Blakesley Love at first sight ❤️😂
Jake Blakesley 😂
I have two reef tanks. Got this buddy in both tanks… such a great fish to keep to help have the tank looking clean at all times. Great video!

NoLurp Thank you for coming by to watch!😁
When I bought mine, it was dark gray; his diet was adapted to pellets. In my tank with only algea to eat, it has turned a yellow gold color.
oh wow, fish knows what it wants haha

A really cool fish to have in your reef tank, I love how they can be invisible and you don't even realize it's in front of your nose until it moves

mine overate on hair algae and its belly got so big it couldnt swim properly. sadly it died the next day
Love your you tube vids ( all about) you are my go to before buying any fish ect
Thanks for always watching
Could you put a Midas & lawnmower? Together ?
Yes!
I heard many refuse to take any prepared foods, even herbivores, and just wither away. Have you found that to be true?
I have a Midas Benny and diamond goby in my 75 gal would he be fine alongside those two?
Yes!
I put one of these and a Tang and my green hair algae is almost gone in less than 2 weeks.
Will a tailspot blenny get the hair algae too or would you recommend a lawnmower over a tailspot?
Heidi's Fish Tank they’ll eat it too! I would recommend the lawnmower over them just because I’ve taken care of so many more of those than the tailspot 😊
Will you do a video about the molly Miller blenny mate I need help
Solid suggestion, thank you!
@@BrockLeonard cheers mate I’ve just purchased one been a week just been hiding
Would he get alone well with a watchmen goby?
For some reason mine goes on its side but he acts perfectly fine
Just got one of these for my 29g Biocube. Can they be fed pellets?
Juan Correa Eventually yes!

Can do!
great video, just subbed ur channel... would they take care of bubble algae?
Jorge Torres I really appreciate that❤️ I have seen them try to pick at them but never really did the job as well as an emerald crab does.
Is it gonna get along with Molly Miller blenny?

How would U feel about a lawnmower blenny and a yellow watchmen goby in a 40 breeder?
Joe Pugner They would be great together
@@BrockLeonard awesome thank U. Was nervous they would pick at each other
@@BrockLeonard can a midas blenny and a yellow watchman goby stay together in a 79 gallon
Can I keep one of these guys in a 55 that already has an established bi color blenny?
You should be fine with that much space
Does this fish eat briopsy algae
Why is my lawnmower blenny so scared of me when I walk to my tank
They tend to be really shy when first introduced. When feeding, stay in front of the tank, it will help them come out more often and be comfortable when you are there.
Will he nip at coral and clams like some of the other blenny's?
Jimmy Ramey personally I’ve never seen one pick at them. BUT I have had other customers come and complain about their blenny nipping at their corals, but it was the bi color blenny.
Jimmy Ramey yes they can destroy corals mine has
My bicolor blenny destroyed my acans
I have owned some of the hardest fish to keep but every time I get a lawnmower blenny they tend to die.
Mine cleans the floor after every feeding. Resulting in the little fellow looking swoll.
No way that is awesome!
Is he compatible with a starry blenny
Moetivation ! Depends on how big the tank is. Blenny’s tend to be territorial over their home once acclimated.
I love these mine is so greedy he has a big belly on him he never stops picking at the rocks
Lee and Mandy Battersby that’s so good!!
Picked one up today.
SSEEAAAHHHAAAWWWKKKSSS RULE!!!!!!!! Niiiiice!
I find them hard to keep not beginner fish
I just picked up one. I hope my Coral Beauty doesn't mind sharing algae lol
Jonathan Simpson 😂😂
How are these dudes with seahorses?

Didn’t mean to say starfish that second time😂
@@BrockLeonard thanks dude!
Mine is 4 ish inches a little more but fucker didn't stay still lol
I love you daddy Brock
Michael Cartagena thanks buddy😂
Hello Brock hello Brock hello Brock
