Hello, i have a thin striped hermit crab i found in south carolina. He’s supposed to be “aggressive” but hes actually not haha. He just keeps to himself all the time, doesnt bother or attack fish, snails, or shrimp. If he ever gets in anyones way while walking they threaten him to go away and he either hides in his shell or walks in the other direction. So my question is since hes so passive would an emerald crab pick on him or kill him even if hes bigger than them? Or dwarf crabs?
One thing of note that I have noticed (I am a rookie btw) is that they will not eat "dirty" algae off the rocks. I have about 1/2"-3/4" grass and fine hair looking algae and when I got him in he went to town on a ledge then stopped eating in bulk, would just pick at stuff. I started to clean out the algae, pulling some and also trying to tooth brush some out and the next day, there was another patch of "grass" missing. My only interpretation of that is the field was too dirty for him to eat off of. This only happened two days ago and the jury is still out if I am correct but I cleaned the rock really good again tonight, shall see. Great info video about these guys, I learned about their initial nocturnal tendencies and that once comfortable they will come out in light. I was wondering what was going on, thanks.
I've got a single pretty good size female emerald crab in my 25 gallon tank. I caught her tonight hanging out in the middle of my Kenya tree picking. I thought it was eating the flesh off of my Kenya tree Coral but it was eating some slimy stuff that was attached to the base after it had deflated for the night. I was super pissed and was about to yank it out of the tank...lol. I'm pretty sure she was just cleaning it though.. there's plenty in there for her to eat.
I would only recommend emerald crabs for large aquariums. One individual might be ok for a nano tank. But they are voracious, and you need to have a lot of living nuissance algae in your tank to satisfy just one. They don't like algae pellets or fish flakes much. They preffered to tear apart my red razor macro and tried to take pieces of my corals too. LFS and anyone who sells them really should stress just how much living algae they require. I feel like these are good for people who kinda suck at keeping their water parameters. Or ppl who use tap water, because it really encourages bad algae to grow, and these critters are an easy fix. As long as you dont have copper pipes or something. They are quite beautiful though.
It just depends. The emerald crab's diet consist of hair algae, and once the tank begins to run low, they look for other snacks which could in turn be your snails and shrimp if you are not feeding the crab
@@BrockLeonard sorry maybe you are miss understood my meaning of fully aquatic crab mean. My meaning fully aquatic crab is it kind of crab live in fully water can without landing?
It is rare that they will survive. Once they hatch, they will be tiny fry that your fish in the tank will chase after. If you really want to keep them alive, your best bet would be to have the crab in a separate tank, but even then finding small enough food for the babies to eat can be difficult.
Jayson Hannah iodine is already in your tank. You can add it if your levels are low, but you shouldn’t have to worry about It. It doesn’t affect anyone.
Awesome video These are the worst crabs i have ever owned they plucked my interstellar shrooms off their rocks just to get to a little gha growing between.
here is a tip: take them in seperate containers, and releasse them on opposite sides of the tank, so they do not have to even know they are in one tank
My emerald crabs are little psycho bastards, they bother nassarius snails, pick fight with the pistol shrimp and nibble on my zoas, maybe I just have bad luck with them.
Thanks Brock. Your awesome. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t too cool or too hot for them. Thanks

What do you think about Pitho Crabs?
Thanks for the great video! What do you recommend as a supplemental products once algae in tank runs out
Pellet food and dry algae are great supplements

Hey Brock, I have a question but not toward the emerald crab but what’s the best temp to just keep mainly fish and inverts. Shrimp crabs
78 no doubt.
I have one that's been by itself for about a month and he's huge.
Dudes living in paradise haha!
Are they can damage fish or kill fish?
Any information on breeding?
I have a pinkish purple one, there really cool.
I just bought my friend one of these crabs
urnotjustin They are great!!!
Can I mix these with a arrow head crab ?
DJ Kenny B Yes
Please do the geometric hawkfish/ geometric Pygmy perchlet. Or a blue assessor
Can you feed them algae wafers that you would feed plecos?
Jayson Hannah you could! Just make sure they eat it all, if they don’t it’ll be like leaving leftover food in there.
Grate video I love this channel it helps so much
Thank you so much for watching!!
I had 3 die in 2 months
Any idea why what possible reason?
Are these compatible with cleaner shrimp?
Alejandro Aragon Tan yes

I’ve had mine for a few months now and he never comes out during the day just at night when all the lights are off ;(
Sal Diaz Yeah emerald crabs can definitely be shy at times :/
Gread video thanks for the info i will buy a few of these
Are they rare? Cause I do not see people widely having this in their tank.
I saw them all the time at the fish store I worked out. A very common addition to someone's clean up crew.

Thank you for sharing!
Can they go with red sea stars
Yes.
Do they live in saltwater
They do!
Can chemi clean kill them? To clean cyano bavteria
No; I’ve never had problems with chemi clean harming them.
Are they compatible with snails and sexy shrimp and pistol shrimp?
It just depends. The emerald crab's diet consist of hair algae, and once the tank begins to run low, they look for other snacks which could in turn be your snails and shrimp if you are not feeding the crab
can i just have one of these without other fish?
Of course!😃
You should do a video on HLLE on tangs
Are corals safe if with emerald crab?
Is emerald crab fully aquatic crab?
Fully aquatic crab. It depends on the corals. I’ve seen them mess with corals when they run out of algae to eat.
@@BrockLeonard sorry maybe you are miss understood my meaning of fully aquatic crab mean.
My meaning fully aquatic crab is it kind of crab live in fully water can without landing?
@@Chongcky9379 Right, these live fully in water.
What’s the life span of these?
You know, you can never really tell. Bout the same as a trusty snail. 1-2 years.
They are not entirely omnivores, one of mine has a thirst for blood.
If I have a goby that loves his cave would the crab try and take it from him?
I highly doubt it. If the goby is already there, the crab will know not to go near there.
ima get one for my 5 gal nano. i have outrageous bristle worms and i needem dealt with. i will let you know how that goes :D
hahaha they'll love it
i think our crab is pregnant, do you have any info on what to do for her, and they babies once they come?

I picked up one of these today.
Do they need calcium doses?
Jayson Hannah No. they do need iodine to help their skin, but as long as you do your water changes, iodine will stay up.
@@BrockLeonard can you add that to the water or do they get it in food? Will iodine hurt any of my fish or hermits?
Jayson Hannah iodine is already in your tank. You can add it if your levels are low, but you shouldn’t have to worry about It. It doesn’t affect anyone.
@@BrockLeonard Why is my emerald crab turning white?
My crab looks like the crab at the 2:15 mark. Kinda dusty white
Do they kill eachother
With plenty to eat on they will not fight each other, but I have seen them attack when they are malnourished.
Awesome video These are the worst crabs i have ever owned they plucked my interstellar shrooms off their rocks just to get to a little gha growing between.
Could they eat something like Mealworms ?
Qwerty Music I think they could but their stomachs are only so big. So don’t feed em too much.
So cool
there not aggressive at all
Every time I get one I get 2 and they end up killing each other on the way home

First first first
No I'm first cause you said it 3 times so ur third
The reason why I said that was because I was excited that I was first so I was the one that was first
Brock leonard can you do the swalesi basselet?
Oh, makes since
