- One kind of rocket artillery is the multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), which resembles a volley gun in its design and consists of numerous launchers mounted on a single platform. Rockets can carry more payload than a comparable-sized gun artillery weapon, have lower recoil, and can even carry several warheads. They are self-propelled in flight and have distinct capabilities from conventional artillery rounds.
Rocket artillery without guidance is infamously imprecise and reloads far more slowly than gun artillery. A multiple rocket launcher can counter this by rapidly launching many rockets, which, when combined with the enormous kill zone of each warhead, can easily cover a target area with saturation fire. To have the best of both worlds-the speed and range of rockets and the pinpoint accuracy of precision-guided weapons-newer models can employ inertial guidance or global positioning systems (GPS).
