Fair play Tonga. As an Irish fan that was a proper test and score board dosnt reflect the game , a bit more time together and Tonga can go a long way. I think Scotland and Boks will be playing full teams and Farrell was right to play a full strength team
Ben Tameifuna is now one of my GOATS, he went 60 minutes against a finals T1 pack and did WORK AGAINST THEM, in mad heat. From now on watching every bordeaux game just to see more. Honestly if Tonga even had a equivalent team to the drua in-terms of a solid group of players playing together against T1 opposition, they could've kept close to Ireland.
Man as an Irishman I really respect the Tongans, and more generally the teams in the WC that aren’t in the 6N or the Rugby Championship, like how are they meant to sharpen themselves nationally? Surely world rugby can do more to accommodate so-called “tier-2” nation competition. It can only benefit us all.
Hats off to Ireland they are the standard in world rugby and continue to showcase their class. Super proud of my ‘ikale Tahi team for a great performance against a phenomenal team. A lot of positives to take from this game, there is a lot of room to improve on east fixes. I truly believe our best performance will be in this World Cup. Go ‘ikale tahi!!!
Great question about playing more regularly against tier 1 nations. We definitely benefited from Tonga's unforced errors. Excited to see how Tonga perform against Scotland. Respect to Tonga
Seeing comments here and elsewhere about Pacific Islanders supporting their brothers. That's perfectly understandable looking from the outside (Irish here), has there ever been any consideration to a united Pacific islander team? I'm guessing it's not on for one of the more following reasons, because of practicalities (distances between the Pacific nations etc), individual nation pride, politics (actual and sporting). Correct me if I'm wrong there. It would be pretty cool to see even if it was just the equivalent of the Irish and British Lions.
Great Idea. If you look at their population size. How many players are scouted for new zealand and all other factors, these Islands have Always punched above their weight. They always had the respect of the rugby world. If they could create some lions like team and tour in the northern hemisphere the experience and growth you would see would be massive!
They use to have a Pacific Islanders team between 2004-2008. I remember going to a game at Landsdowne Road in 2006. Ireland beat them with a pretty similar scoreline to this. However, when it came to the World Cup each of the nations continued to represent themselves.
If they did it as a British Lions equivalent that would be good, but you can't erase their nations. They have unique languages and cultures, even if similar to the outside.
@zombievikinggaming4258 So, if they had an Irish and British Lions equivalent, you'd be calling it something like the Fijian Iguanas and leave out any reference to Samoa, Tonga or other Pacific islands, hmm nice 😏 Bit ironic that you say you don't want to erase their unique nations, which I fully understand btw, but you're quite happy to erase Irish from the Irish and British Lions despite the likelihood that we'd possibly be contributing over half the team if it were picked tomorrow.
Congrats Ireland... Tonga has the abìlity to do great things but hopefully they'll get back , The World Cup ain't over yet.. Fiji backs our Pacific brothers... FIJI*TONGA*SAMOA *.. 4EVA
Love the comments, most seem genuinely nice and that is rare on social media these days. I love Rugby and American football, two of the toughest sports in the world, a true test of competitiveness and ruggedness. ❤❤
Tonga needs a better coach, there are some good players in that Tongan team not sure if they were properly coached, to many basic errors they also need more game times with Tier 1 teams, I was hoping for a more competitive scoreline not a 59-16 thrashing. Poor start Toutai!
Great test match Tonga. When you get a new coach all will be better fir you. Keep believing and especially, in your positive emotions and skill sets. It was your first game and you did very well. Remember that.
the world rugby union should be ashamed of themselves by constantly pushing these great 'tier2' nations back in their dungeons. I think I speak for almost every rugbyfan when I say that these teams should get at least 1 or 2 games against topteams every autumn series. I'd rather see that than a meaningless Baabaa's game against some second string 6nations team.
Small nations like Tonga will always struggle, they can't have the same depth as nations with bigger populations, and lose talent to those nations too... Having said that, Tonga punch well above their weight and are a team that does demand respect from any other team.
It’s sad that the island teams don’t have as many games as tier one nations it’s so hard to try and gel as a team in a few weeks and then play in a World Cup ?? This is a unfair playing ground and has been for so long
Man touch wood like the ad says that aside going into 2023 what I really wanted was not just to win a grandslam not just to win a world cup but to go undefeated for the entire year Right now we're halfway through the poolstage 5 more wins and we not only win the RWC but we break the all time record for consecutive wins so really chasing history now
Not Tonga’s best effort. They seemed a bit star struck. Their game plan didn’t appear to be very well thought out. Crash ball only works if you draw the big boys to defend and then get it out to the speedsters. Holding on to the ball helps. Not kicking away meagre possession also helps, but we’ve seen a lot of that. More pointless kicking than we’ve seen in years. No shame in losing to the best, and we can expect a rebound effort in the next match.
Tonga were absolutely awful and less than the sun of their parts. Compared to Fiji and even Uruguay and Portugal, Tonga looked really badly coached. Scrum, lineout and defence were lacking basic cohesion and structure. In attack they relied on individuals rather than any coherent plan or system. Also, Kata was absolutely dreadful. Kicked like a crash ball centre on the wing but so dull. Leaves a cheap shot on Lowe that barely tickled him and then 1 minute later from that pen Ireland score a try. Really badly coached side. Kefu out.
Ireland were excellent however on the day Tonga were awful, they really were very mediocre and that's being kind considering they have former All blacks in their team , poor discipline and poor skill allied to poor overhaul conditioning.

How do we get these teams into regular top team matches? This world Cup so far is showing an even bigger gap. You almost need two separate cups.
