    I've been using my Bose L1 Compact for about 8 -10 years now and it has NEVER let me down. I play about 10 to 15 gigs per month. I too play with other musicians from time to time so all I did was add a cheap behringer 1202 mixer and the problem is solved. It also has the reverb effect for the vocals that I like to use. I put everything into the Behringer and take the left right main outs and, through an 3/4 to xlr adapter, plug it into the mic jack on my Bose L1. It sounds fantastic and I get compliments everywhere I play and I ALWAYS get asked back for return engagements. All Glory to God as they say, but I know the Bose has a lot to do with how well I am received (of course the Bose sound engineers can give GLory to God for their abilities, right lol!). I also use a Digitech Vocalist Live 3 for harmonies. Man I am in heaven with the quality sound I get. Just played for an outdoor crowd of about 500 last night and got no complaints about the sound. The Bose handled it just great. Immediately after got asked to do some re-bookings for the same event. Great review. Just add a cheap mixer and you'll be totally happy.

      Thanks FiremanOly for this info. I was playing my 12-string electro-acoustic guitar and singing, using different equipment and setups from 70's to not so long ago. Nowadays, as I am into my 7th decade and don't want to deal with a heavy equipment, I've started to look at Bose's L1 systems, as I am using smaller Bose audio equipment at home and I am VERY happy with audio quality.
      I am presently looking to purchase at some point this year Bose L1 Compact, but adding Yamaha MG10XU mixer and TC Helicon Perform VG (vocal and acoustic guitar effects processor) which will do the trick for me.
      Thank you for a feedback on Lewis's Bose L1 Compact story 🙂👍

      @@vinkor7824 Hey Vinko, I failed to mention that I also employ a digitech vocalist live 3 so I can add harmonies. Everyone has their own opinions on gear of course but even though the Vocalist Live 3 is a bit older technology I have found that it is the most user friendly and the most natural sounding harmonizer on the market. You can still find them for around 200 bucks in great shape. It allows me to do CSNY, Everly Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, America, Eagles etc etc. and just about every other great vocal harmonies and sound really close to the original. I wouldn't be without anyone of those pieces of equipment in my arsenal. If my Bose got destroyed/stolen I would be back in the store the first thing the next morning to buy another one. I have lifted and set up thousands of tons of equipment over the years and my back has the aches and pains to prove it. Now it is nothing to set up my Bose and I truly think the sound quality is much better, because what I hear , the audience hears. I love it! Good luck. A bit pricey but so, so, well worth it!

      Good read Fireman! Thanks. I use a VL4 with my L1 Compact. Also run it thru a JamMan Solo XT Looper Pedal. I lugged Peavey speakers around for decades along with a Fender Deluxe Guitar Amp. Retired now at 75 except for the annual Christmas Party. Do you put the VL3 into the mixer mono and out the mixer mono to the XLR Mic input of the Bose? My VL4 can sound strange going straight into the Mic input of the L1 Bose.

    • @FiremanOly
      @FiremanOly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JMonk26 Thanks for commenting. I run a mono xlr output feed from my VL3 into the 1st channel xlr input of my behringer. From the Behringer mixer I like to take both left and right monitor outputs and put them into an adapter that takes the two 1/4 inch jacks and cpnverts to an XLR which I plug into the L1 mic input. For my guitar I of course first run it into the VL3 so the unit can properly get the chords/keys it needs to provide the harmonies, but I prefer to then plug it into a digitech RP 100. then the RP1 goes into the guitar jack of the L1. I dont use much if any of the VL3 effects on my guitar, just my guitar pedal. And like I said earlier, I prefer the reverb settings for my vocals, the the Behringer has to offer. Very happy with it and I get compliments from other musicians all the time that come up to check out my set up. Very simple set up for a simple guy like myself. Hope that helps.

      @@vinkor7824 I am looking at the Bose L1 Compact for similar reasons: in my early 70s I'm finding my current kit too heavy to lug around. I currently use a Peavey XR-696F with 4x XLR mics for voice, plus one XLR radio mic for flute, and one stereo 2x 1/4inch jack for keyboard. I'm thinking: buy a light weight mixer to mix that lot and feed the result into the RCA sockets on the Bose L1 Compact. My stupid question of the day: I use stereo effects on my Tyros 4 keyboard so will they be correctly heard on the Bose L1 Compact? I.e. does it faithfully reproduce stereo sound or would I need two of them (which I can't afford). The Peavey provides 2 x 600W RMS but I have never had it turned up more than 1/4 of the way. Bose don't say how many Watts the L1 Compact delivers - they do say that it consumes 200W which means it will deliver less than 200 Watts of audio - as long as the result is close to 200W then that should be enough I reckon. What do you think?

    I have the Bose L1 Compact and have used it for many years. I love it. The sound and portability are unmatched. And the Bose T1 is NOT just a mixer. It is 4 independent channel strips. And the presets for Mics/Guitars are excellent.
    If I had to re-buy a line array I would give the Harbringer MLS900 (to use with the T1) a long look because it is half the price. Thanks for your review.

    Lewis I'm a DJ and Karaoke host and I run all of my gigs with 2 Bose L1 Compacts with a Peavey PV10AT mixer. I've also run sound with this same set up for a small 4 piece band. I get nothing but amazing comments about how great this small, compact, PA system sounds. I recommend looking at adding a mixer similar to what I use to your arsenal. There are better and more advanced mixers then the one I use available, however, for the price, it works great for me. Good luck in your search.

    I have the L1 Compact. Make no mistake the Compact with a mixer/effects such as the Tonematch is far superior. I've done medium size clubs with the L1 Compact and the Tonematch and I use Backing Tracks with lead guitar instrumentals and vocals encompassing big ballads all running through it and it sounds great and that's according to the audience not me. I position it fairly close at the side of me and I can hear it quite plainly....dont need a monitor as it has 180 degrees spacial sound...very portable too. I used to be in a band in the 60's and 70's and did loads of working mens clubs and worked in France touring the American Army camps then in Germany humping big speakers and other gear all over the place in a Transit Van, so to find the L1 Compact at my age as a solo guitar/vocalist was amazing.

    I have been using this system for many years. In larger gigs I used two of them connected together. In gigs over 150 people connect them to a house system. One of them is enough for a house concert, small club. They are portable, almost indestructible and great sound. Comments on the mixer: I use the T1 bose mixer. Works very well. Do not make the mistake into thinking that you can plug a bunch of instruments into this system via a larger mixer. Remember it is only one stick. One voice and guitar, perhaps two voices maximum, after that the system will start to distort or even compress to protect itself. It's really meant for one performer but you can cheat and add two at low volumes as long as the second one is not a keyboard or something that requires the whole frequency spectrum.

    Great review. I have been looking at a range of self contained PAs for my solo act. I like the fact that you admitted that you chose to "splurge." Performers need to give themselves permission to invest in equipment a couple of levels higher than they think will do. It's amazing how it helps with confidence and competence. Thanks also for your detailed descriptions of the pubs and crowd size - that's a very practical way of describing its power. I'm writing this in March 2022. Getting ready to get out there and perform once again, and I will be buying a Bose L1 thanks to your great review (and a couple of other peoples' reviews too). Cheers!

    I play in a classic rock duo and we use two Bose L1 systems. I use a 12 channel Behringer board and we use midi tracks also to go through the Bose. I really love this system. My partner and I also use vocal harmonizers. We have used Digitech Vocalists for about 10 years. I bought a TC Helicon G-XT to replace one of our Digitech Vocalist units (it got accidentally damaged when something fell on it). The TC Helicon is a great unit and I think is actually better than the Digitech Vocalist but I ended up not using it and buying another Vocalist. Why? Because I found the TC Helicon to be overly sensitive. It picks up background sounds coming from the PA or a monitor and tries to harmonize those stray sounds. In this way part of what it makes it better is what makes it less ideal for my situation. I think the TC Helicon would be better for a solo artist. The reverb's in the TC Helicon are excellent but so are the reverb's in the Digitech. As a matter of form the Digitech Vocalist has more convenient foot pedals where the TC Helicon has "effects pedal" style switches. In a dark club it is much easier to find the on off pedal on the Digitech Vocalist. That's my opinion.

    • @Rickholly74
      @Rickholly74 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would also add that the TC Helicon is much more complicated to operate. It has a ton of effects parameters, settings and memory patches but in all honesty I set my Digitech on to one harmony over , one under (high 3rd and low 5th) and I don't change it all night. That was also a major consideration on going back to a Digitech Vocalist. I don't have time to get down and mess with settings between songs. I still own the TC Helicon and keep it as a backup. Again just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

    • @FiremanOly
      @FiremanOly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally own three different Digitech vocalist threes and would not ever be with out them. I have one loaned out to a friend and I have one as a spare just in case. Don't want to brag but I think I can sound AMAZING with my set up. I get about 10 to 15 gigs a month and I usually end up passing on another 2 to 3 gigs to my buddies. I have no doubt that a lot of the credit for my demand goes to the system I use (and don't over use I might add). The bose L1 compact, my Taylor guitar, Digitech Vocalist 3, and my Behringer 1202 Xenyx mixer, along with a cheap digitech RP 100 guitar pedal, make for an unbeatable sound. I like the vocal reverb on my Behringer better than the reverb on my vocalist 3, plus it allows me to have a guest singer come on up and plug in. God Bless and keep sharing your gifts!

    • @bwade2481
      @bwade2481 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah - I'd go Digitech Vocalist as well. Using the LIVE 4 I like that I can setup custom FX settings for both the voice and GTR and scroll through easily while playing live. For me I never touch the harmonized vocals - too robotic / artificial I reckon. but to add that sparket to Guitar and Vocie - it works a treat plus a very handy and easy to see guitar tuner onboard.

      I jammed in the weekend with a band that used two L1 model 2 Bose systems with the 8 channel Tonematch mixer, we had trouble with feedback and the vocals sounded thin and after 25 minutes of trying to work it out we just backed off the frequency we thought was giving us grief and hoped for the best, was not a great jam vocally.
      Ironically I use two Bose L1 model 1. Units myself and have never had this much trouble with vocals, although if you play in a rock band I think they struggle because I cannot have my master volume above 50% or it will feedback, what I did notice is that when I used my behringer mixer instead of my T4 it seemed more manageable, maybe someone with more knowledge with these units could help.
      But at lower volume or with a two piece band they sound great.
      Just my thoughts.

    • @rickpearce9239
      @rickpearce9239 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rubberbandlevin Like you I do not use the Bose Tonematch with my L1 systems, I use a 12 channel Behringer Xenyx mixer and we use Shure 87A condenser microphones. I have no problem with feedback at relatively high volume in medium sized clubs. I didn't buy the Tonematch because I already had the Behringer mixer and a 12 channel Mackie mixer. The Tonematch mixers are way overpriced. I set the volume on the L1's to 50% and let the mixer do the heavy lifting. We can get pretty loud with no distortion from the Bose L1. I guess it depends how loud the musicians themselves are to start with.

    Excellent review that tracks well both with many other reviews and my own experience. A couple notes: Bose products tend to be pricey, but in the U.S. at least, you usually get outstanding customer service. And in the case of the Tonematch T1 (and newer T4S), you're getting features not available on comparable analog mixers, such as the stored optimized mic (and guitar) settings (limited in my judgment), "scene" saving, and when used with upper-level units like the L1 Model 2, the ability to power the Tonematch by plugging it into the base unit just via the fancy Cat 5 cable that also carries the audio--no power brick required. Nevertheless Compact fans have been asking for years for built-in reverb and basic tone shaping, but no luck (they gave in on the newer, smaller S1.)
    Last of all, the Boss VE-8 pedal is a great companion to the Compact, with a variety of effects including chorus, an "acoustic resonance" feature that takes out much of the quackiness of piezo pickups, reverb, a vocal harmonizer, a vocal "enhance" effect I don't use, and a basic looper. You can also set low, mid and high EQ for both voice and guitar, but this requires some second-level fiddling with the controls that normal human beings won't be able to manage live. It can also run on batteries, certainly enough for a gig. Good luck, hope the gigs are going great.

I've purchased a TC Helicon to try, as I can have it on the mic stand, but haven't had much time to mess with it. I use the Compact for about 90% of my gigs. I have also added in a few other performers through the mixer occasionally using just this unit and the Bose has handled it all really well. Dependable and great sound. Hey man, great and honest review! Just wanted to point out that while, as you mentioned, the bose t1 tonematch mixer is 4 channels, 3 of those are mono and 1 is stereo. Which means that you can, as you talked about, have ur guitar AND mic plugged in, have a keyboard player sit in (plugged in in stereo, beautiful) and still have one channel to spare. The t1 also has the tonematch function which is supposed to make mixing a lot easier as it has eq presets for a bunch of instruments and microphones. Really a pretty unique device that I recommend you look into. Also, another product to look into is the yamaha stagepas 1k which has built in reverb. Also, I'm not getting paid to say this ha :)

I have one and use the newest Soundcraft Mixer which has as 1 of the options a karaoke button(reverb and compression). I only turn it on just enough to give the effect. Through research and talking to music store pros, I do not hook my mixer into the xlr of the PA, I connect to the 1/4 “. I believe that is how it shows in the manual as well. Just recently I bought a 2nd hand Sony Subwoofer(same watts actually-130) delivers that low end that is missing. I have in the past paired it with the Costco PA speaker...sweet. One more thing and probably the best improvement-not using the industry standard sm58 mic! Using the Sennheiser 935.

    I've been using the L1 Compact for about 10 years. I dropped down from the full-sized L1 system, and found that the compact system was actually all that I needed. I have 2 systems, and I've actually used them both in an L-shaped room - they worked great. I use a DigiTech pedal for reverb and harmony, and the whole system sounds amazing; the pedal actually adds quite a bit of volume to the vocal channel, as well. All in all, I'm VERY pleased with the system - especially the portability. 28 pounds of dynamite!

    Hi Lewis, nice upfront review. I use a Bose L1 model 2 system - great pa, the Bose compact is designed for the small pub/room acoustic gig realistically, still a great system though. I have the Tonematch with my system, these are an absolute must if you’re using a Bose PA, the tonal range you can achieve is second to none, I know - I use one. You can buy the Tonematch 1 (earlier version) for a little as £250.00 new (old stock in some stores), this has guitar effects, mic tone shaping and great reverbs. You could dump your pedal board and just use the Tonematch - problem solved! Might be worth mentioning I use a TC Helicon Play GTX which does all the guitar, vocal harmonies, and effects - these can be purchased used for around £150.00. I know you may be a little disappointed with the lack of effects on Bose, but rest assured you won’t get better sound reproduction and coverage than a Bose- fact! I have gigged as a solo musician with mine for years, wouldn’t change it for the anything else......go on spend just a little bit more money and buy the icing on the cake - the Tonematch. Cheers,John.

      Hi John, thanks for your comment! Yeah, the more I’ve researched, the more the tonematch seems inevitable! I just don’t understand why Bose couldn’t have just put a reverb on board!

      @@lewisforemanmusic I'm looking to replace a big, heavy traditional PA with something like this Bose unit (actually 2 of them). Our band has 5 pieces, with one of the players using keys, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, accordion (yes) and voice. I have to submix her on a Alesis unit and put her into one of the channels on the main mixer (Soundcraft 12-channel). So, with all this processing going on before even reaching the L1, will this be a suitable use? You referenced briefly a review that mentioned using the L1 with mixers which sounded less than enthusiastic. Do know where I might find that? Very lucid review that talks about things that real-world musicians care about. Good job.

    Excellent presentation and review from having actual experience with the L1 compact. So many column array system demos are from a DJ’s experience and point of view. That being said, if you’re gigging enough to justify the expence- the tonematch 4 or 8 are outstanding. Hopefully you might find one on the used market for a decent price since they are a bit expensive as new.

    Hey Lewis, thanks for the great review. I'm just wondering on monitoring/hearing yourself, specially for the larger rooms - I guess it seems a long way from a couple of outward-facing speakers and a little monitor wedge. Could you comment on placing the 'pole' and any issues with hearing yourself vs. getting best position for the crowd; any feedback issues? Cheers. Let me know when you're playing Swindon too!!!

      Hi Jol,
      My apologies for the delay in getting back to you! For the first few gigs, i set this up parallel to myself and to the left. With the directional speakers, this works well to hear yourself whilst you're playing. I have experimented with different positions and so far, thats the best all round option and I don't see the need for monitors. I have also played venues with this directly behind me (usually a PA nono for feedback reasons). I have never experienced feedback with this unit and I don't understand how that is possible. The only issue with it directly behind is playing at high volume damaging your ears. still sounds great though!
      Hope that helps, feel free to ask me anything else! Also, thanks for the facebook like!

    Nice review, I own this and the Bigger L1, the only thing I would say in defence of this particular unit is that one compact is just enough for 2 live inputs ie guitar and vox and backing track, as soon as you start adding other instruments "musician" especially keyboards it starts to bum out. Used as intended for a solo performer I don't think a faster, smaller better sounding system exists imho.

      @lewisforemanmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris,

      @@lewisforemanmusic Hi Lewis,
      Thanks for the reply, what I really meant to put across in my comment was that the L1 compact just doesn't really have that much headroom for more than two instruments performing at the same time , even if you connect a T1, granted it does give more channels but the speaker can't handle it very well at large volumes, as it was really designed as personal PA system as Bose intended for one L1 per user.

    Thanks for this review, even though I'm two and a half years late to the party. I'm interested in something like this because, after decades of gigging with conventional PAs, I'm wanting to "scale down"....both in gear and, to some extent, volume. (loudness) I'm putting together a new ensemble, with guitar, electric bass, small drum kit, and sax. There will be at least two or three of us singing, (plus sax) Drums will NOT be mic'd, and guitar and bass will each have their own small amps. So the question is, as we did fifty years ago, is this adequate as a primarily VOCAL PA system? Any suggestions welcome.....thanks.

    • @lewisforemanmusic

      Thanks for checking it out! In my opinion, its a fantastic all round PA system and can pack a punch volume wise, you would just need a decent mixer to level everything out the way you wanted. Also bare in mind that you might want to put two of these together for the sort of size band you're talking about, just to have the options of getting it loud enough so the drums feel 'in the mix'. Hope that helps!

    Hi Lewis, thanks for your helpful review. I can recommend the TC Helicon Perform.V for vocal effects - it is small and clips onto the mic stand for easy control and muting of effects when talking. I've done a review here:

    Feel free to check out my microphone reviews and singing stuff.
    All the best,
    Anton
