    Bose L1 is a hobbyist's toy, Turbosound ip 1000 is a professional's tool..
    more than 1000 gigs with turbo sound (7 years) ,
    not on the couch at home, but with the audience at concerts

      I respectfully could not disagree more. I've done over 75 gigs this year (2024) by June 1. The Bose performs admirably and professionally in every circumstance. It's a lot easier to cart to-and-from shows. The Turbosound IP1000 is clunky and awkward by comparison.

    That's a good comparison video, worth watching. I've tried so many different vertical array setups now, starting with an LD Maui 28 which, although powerful, was too heavy for my applications (wedding guitarist... involves a lot of lugging gear into churches and castles).. I recently bought an LD Maui 5 and thought it was awful - the sound was lifeless and the dispersion was not satisfactory and it went back to the shop the next day.
    I bit the bullet a few months back and invested in a Bose L1 Classic with 2xB1 bass units.. only to find that, although it could certainly make a big sound, again it was 'too big' and heavy to lug around, and also too tall for a lot of old venues and pubs/restaurants. So I swapped it for the L1 Compact and was ASTOUNDED by the overall package - light, portable, the vertical array can be positioned at different heights, the sound quality/clarity surpasses everything else I've tried - I'm so impressed that I've just bought another one to go with it for larger venues or when I need to change rooms at weddings quickly.. plus I can use a mixer with the two in stereo for the open mic nights I run. Love this product!

    The Turbosound has a more neutral/balanced sound, specially with the Anthem - It sounds like a Martin with the TS. Bose, eh. The Bose may sound more ear pleasing and clear but I think this is due to the built-in EQ and compression in which alters the tone to achieve a 3D sound and also shooting the frequencies in the mid-highs and highs further. The Bose sounds like its has a scoop in the mids and slightly in mid-lows, this emphasizes those mid-highs and highs in which is why people say it sounds more pleasing than the TS. This alteration also causes your Martin to sound less like a Martin in which has very warm lows and mid-lows. The TS is my winner! My Midas board/interface would be more flexible with the TS and if I wanted that Bose “sound”, I can achieve close to it with the Midas app using EQ and compression on the master channel. Personally, I’ve never liked the Bose sound as a PA solution.

    • @gair1944
      @gair1944  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The camera does tend to equalize everything a bit. The Bose L1 Compact is more forgiving and sounds sweeter to me. It certainly sounds better if I need to stand right in front, or next to it at gigs. The Turbosound IP1000 sounds best off axis and with a little more distance. It fills in some sonic blanks that are present with the Bose. But with my Fishman Platinum Pro EQ Preamp on the pedal board I can dial in whatever is needed and that works GREAT with the Bose.

  • @LiveMusicOntario
    @LiveMusicOntario 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was just exposed to the Bose L1 system at a small restaurant gig last weekend. Each of 2 guitarists had their own system. They said they'll never go back to traditional guitar amps with speakers on pipe stands, unless they need to move a lot more volume than any of their venues call for. Too bad I didn't have the proper cables to run direct from the L1's 1/4" TRS output to my Tascam DR-40. I was prepared for the male XLRs on the back of the Fishman amps a few other players here use. I'm enlightened :). On this demo, the Turbosound still sounds "amplified" where the Bose "just is" and seems transparent between the guitar and my ears. I suppose one could play with the EQ for longer than this video's duration to get them closer to each other in sound.

I just spoke with a Small Church that has a Used Turbosound 1000 in AS NEW Condition for $599.00. I need to check one thing. Seems I read the Turbosound has TWO Inputs. It also has more Power but I don't need more Power. 2nd Input would be nice. Thanks again!

    They both sound great. Do you prefer one over the other? Are you able to add more channels to the Turbosound as you can with the Bose (using the external module)? While the Bose offers clarity, the Turbosound seems to add color and sounds louder. But maybe that was just your settings? Thx!

      Turbosound is harsher to the musician up Close. Thr bose dispersion is more even and pleasing for my audiences. You can add a mixer for either system to add as many channels as you want. Also, the turbosound sub is awkward to carry

    The ability of a system to accurately reproduce the sound of the instrument is the goal. In other words it wouldn’t be possible to distinguish the instrument itself versus the sound reproduced from the system.

      There are ways to use a Bose Tonematch and mount on a mic stand or put it in front of you, but its not very elegant as it needs AC power using a power brick and cord to the Tonematch. There are a lot of other great mixers at half the cost of a Tonematch, such as the Behringer xAir. For my needs however I don't need or use an external mixer.

      Hi Rich, I could not agree more. You encapsulated exactly how I feel about both these systems. The Bose lays back and works great in quiet/super near-field settings. The Turbosound IP1000 has greater punch and is more full range. There is more texture throughout all frequencies. It is a value leader. The App is very useful too offering greater flexibility. I have not tried the Maui, but I am very happy with these options.

      Gary Roberts turbo sound are a copy of the ld systems Maui. The Maui 11 g2 uses 3 small speakers for its sub for long throw bass plus the column speakers are 3 inch over 2.75.
      The Bose L1 is closer to the Maui 28 or the Turbosound ip2000. We use an original Maui 28 not the g2 and it’s brilliant every disco someone always wants to know about it. So for guests to ask about the sound system means it must be very good

    Hello Gary. A bit late to the party... a great compare video of the two of the systems I have on my shortlist... Question: Which of these would you recommend in lieu of... a guitar amp? I play metal (think prog) but I like a polished smooth sound and I often use guitar synth so I need to cover a MUCH wider sonic spectrum than a typical guitar occupies. So I had an idea to use a column system as an amp (and monitor...) to have the sound on my ear level. And I'd still feed into PA, so a column would be to cover podium only. I tried the 'full-size' Bose system with a SUB and it was amazing. But way out of my league :) ANY advice or thought would be welcome! Thanks.

It's been awhile since I had that kind of control picking string to string with a flat pick. I preferred the Turbosound slightly and appreciate you demoing it side by side with the Bose. If ever I were to gig again, I'd be looking at a system like that as it's tiresome packing my old Carvin Stagemate S400D system in and out of venues - which near the end always came with a flight of stairs! ;^)

      Dilki, thank you! I did something new last week. I used both in tandem! I used the line-out from the Bose and connected it to the input on the Turbosound. That was very cool and illustrated the difference between systems. The Bose is a bit scooped and thinner sounding in the midrange and treble. The Turbosound is more balanced and delivers a more even frequency range.

    Hey There, thanks for this side by side. I am just wondering how is regular music playback through the Turbo Sound vs the Compact? Would you say you could get more volume out of it vs the Compact? The reason I ask, is I play live music, but also DJ. I currently have a fella that works for me and I send him out with my Fender Expo, which is a line array system that looks very much like the Turbo Sound. Only problem is the Fender seems to be discontinued. Will soon be in need of another unit.

    I thought that just for acoustic guitar the Bose L1 is fine. The. Bose is detailed but is lacking low mid weight. The Turbo Sound in this setting seems warmer with more mids (which may not be as appealing to the ear on just AC guitar) . I’m looking at a compact system now for AC guitar and vocals. I’m leaning towards the Turbo Sound because it does have enough low mids and lows to keep the vocals punchy without being too thin. Do you sing through these systems too? If so how do the vocals stack up?

    • @gair1944
      @gair1944  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you would have to use a line level signal from the receiver since this is a powered unit. I imagine it could be done but that was not its intended application. The tower speakers are oriented from midrange (lower) to tweeter at the top. So I think the alignment from a seated position might not be optimal

  • @timbranson1386

    Great vid bro! Something to consider for anyone making this choice:
    To my ears finger-picking sounded much nicer with the Bose - as you mentioned is has that "airy, spatial" sound that has a nice, sitting by a waterfall, ambient vibe. But when you played with more attack - which is more my style - the Turbosound was the choice for me. Perhaps it's because of the "blank spots" in the Bose you referred to. In fact, I picked the Fishman SA220 over the Compact for that reason a couple of years back.
    That said, I'm now looking to replace the 220 bc I need more bass. Sounds great for my strumming style EXCEPT, I also use a looper and beat out rhythms on the guitar (a la KD Tunstall). Sometimes have a Cajon player. Have you done any of that with the TS 1000? If so how does it sound? It needs some thump (to a degree - i'm not a house DJ!) without sounding muddy or boomy. Just need some punch in that freq range bc the SA220 ain't cuttin' it. Thx again for a great A/B demo!

    • @gair1944
      @gair1944  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tim, the pair of 8” drivers in the turbosound IP1000 will definitely give you the thump you want. I agree the TS fills in more sonic spaces. I am always pleased with the Bose L1Compact at gigs but I am also more acutely aware of the mid scoop and a somewhat thin and sizzle treble. It can be tamed and is quite musical. Pairing the two systems together is kind of cool but overkill and more stuff than I want to carry to my gigs.

    • @gair1944
      @gair1944  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Dolce I think the turbosound is I bit punchier thru all frequencies. The Bose might have a slight midrange scoop that makes it sound so natural. I enjoy playing through the Bose a bit more but the turbosound does punch the sound out more forward. That can be overwhelming for the front tables if I am up close however. The venue and location of audience dictates which i choose to use. I did a corporate show last night and was far away from guests on the lawn as they were dining. The turbosound was ideal for that application

    • @gair1944
      @gair1944  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The answer really depends on where I am performing. If I am standing right in front of it, just a few feet away, I prefer the Bose. It sounds better to me up close and is less feedback prone. The Turbosound has mid range drivers in the middle of the vertical pole and a single tweeter. So it can be a bit too loud up close. but if I can set up off the side, I think the Turbosound may actually be more balanced across all frequency ranges and the 3 band EQ can be adjusted from my iPhone. That is a very nice feature. Once I get it set however, I leave it alone. Does that help?

      What sort of stomp box do you mean? I used the Turbosound IP1000 for outdoor corporate shows a lot. Up to a 100 guests. I've started actually gigging with the Bose L1 Compact "And" the IP1000. The Bose S1 Pro is decent for super small, quite venues. The Bose L1 Compant (L1C) (in my opinion) is richer, fuller, disperses better and is a big step up from the S1 Pro. The S1 Pro however includes reverb and will run on battery power. Neither of those are huge reasons for me to have a S1 Pro. I also like the monitoring I hear with the L1C (or Turbosound) being at head level when I am standing. I hear them better and have a good sense of what the audience is hearing also since the Bose L1 Compact dispersion is very even.

      Yes I owned an EV Evolve 50 for a couple years. It is absolutely superb. Perhaps better then either of these with the exception of the much larger subwoofer/bass module. I was disappointed in the App being more limited for tonal shaping than the Turbosound. That surprised me. The app may have evolved since I sold my EV 50 last year. It really is very nice, but way overkill for 90% of my shows. - PS: The Evolve 30 is probably a better size/fit. I may try one at some point, but the Bose is just so easy to work with. Hi Bo, The Bose S1 Pro is super portable and runs on battery power if that matters to you? I always use a pedal board so I need power either way. The Turbosound IP1000 offers a LOT of performance, features and sound for the money and I feel it is a bit 'fuller' and represents all frequency ranges of my acoustic guitar better than the Bose. But alone, both are splendid. The Turbo sound sub/bass module is however the biggest and heaviest. I mostly just lift it in and out of my SUV ..and roll into some venues. Not a big deal.
