Lighter and candle method works really well with steel and Skeleton keys in my opinion. I’ve seen this tool your using but I have never seen someone use it on non automotive keys, that’s pretty cool 😎

Yeah, it works really well on these types of keys. I use the candle on old bit keys, everything else I always just eyeball it haha - Kilo

I think that "4th" wafer you see in the back is a retention wafer. It can be used to remove and change out the entire core if needed, for security or other purposes. Usually the company who makes these locks send a special pick with the hardware. You just stick it to the back of the core, lift, and pull the entire core out.

Ive used all those methods in the past. My go to is to smoke the key and then use the lishi.

Way to make it look easy, this is something I do want learn, I will have to look into getting one of these cutters when I am ready, I work in a machine shop and we use either a black marker or something called steel blue to check for high spots or while doing a layout, by using a marker or whatever it does make it easier to see the impressions.

I have your entry recorded for 1 entry into the giveaway! Best of luck to you in the drawing!
With keys people have used markers, candles, sandpaper and file knife edges all to see marks better.
One day I was trying to teach 3 Locksmith's to impression at a shop on a really dead day
and they kept having trouble with all of those concepts, so I went to my van and cut them all
some setup-keys, I brought them back in and they all go the concept within 10-15 mins!
It takes away the guess work in spacing and "is that a mark?" lol.
After a while like this video you just end up eyeballing the cuts but, that all
comes with repetition! Practice makes perfect!

Nice job! However, while it is definitely faster, I prefer using files for impressioning(As I feel that that you risk taking off too much with a key clipper).P.S.Why do you use needle files, as opposed to Swiss-cut ones(e.g. Pippin, rat tail)?I remember when I first tried my hand at impressioning, I bought a set of those files at Home Depot, and the striations left on the blank were too rough to allow me to see any subsequent marks left by the tumblers.

Yeah, it's a gamble either way sometimes, if the Locksmith is heavy handed they could file too much. I've been cutting keys for years, so I guess I just know a ballpark of where the depths are lol
These files I used as an example mainly because these are what most lock shops have to tell you the truth. Not many Locksmiths know how to impression keys, so they throw a cheap set of these on every van if at all, so I wanted to use what the Apprentice would have on their service van.
I've worked at 3 Lock Shops and at 2 of them I was the only one who knew how to impression a key and was confident enough to utilize the skill in the field. The 3rd shop I worked at I was one of two Locksmiths who could impression. It's definitely a skill that gets you hired even if you know nothing else haha
But, even the shop where the veteran Locksmith could also impression, the shop owner only supplied these Harbor Freight needle files as he had no clue how to do it himself... just wanted to keep it realistic for the viewers who may be tasked with it one day at their shop! - Kilo

@@LockandKilo One more thing, given that the cam is penned in place, how is one supposed to screw a nut around the shell of that lock(So as to attach it to the drawer, cabinet, display case, etc. it’s supposed to keep secure)?

@@lokpikr999 This particular lock used a clip, basically slides down to hold the lock in place similar to auto's. It's pretty common now a days on most locking mail boxes sold at Hardware stores now a days. - Kilo

What about locks that can have tumblers go 0-1.00" (for example) but need to be .50" to be free at both top and bottom pints of the tumblers?

i been thinking of getting one of these i have alot of locks with no keys i want to impression do you think it is a good idea for a noob to learn with one of these?

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

In my personal opinion, yes I think this would be a good tool for a beginner. I wish I had this when I was a new. You will go through a lot of blanks since there is a learning curve, but I feel it's not much different than the filing method.
Also, in this case you do not have to clean up the key afterwards as much as the file method. When I used to use files, I would impression the key and then code cut a key based on my impression in many cases in order to give the client a clean key.
This tool as you can see in the video leaves the key looking like it was cut on a key machine. Something I will get to in a future video will be Sight Reading Wafers. If you can learn to Sight Read, you will be able to use this tool fairly effortlessly after some practice. - Kilo

I have a key to a Shad topbox on a motorcycle, that I cannot get a duplicate made. No one has the blank key style. I tried the automated key machines and I even tried the manufacturer and no can do.
If I lock the box & lose the key, I'm up the creek without a paddle.
Would you be able to make duplicates of this key for me?
It had number 1982 on it.

Hi, SJ.. I can't remember off hand the exact blanks they use, I haven't come across many but I believe the T79R is one key blank that comes up on a quick search, however they have multiple blanks that they use depending on era.
Often times on those it's easier and more cost effective to swap out the lock with another style and save money and get a lock with a more common key blank, that way if you lose or break your key it isn't a mission to find one quickly.
Taking it to your nearest Lock Shop they should be able to tell exactly which blank or if not, they should be able to tell you if it can be swapped out. - Kilo

      FYI :
THESE MOTORCYCLE HARDCASES ARE THE BEST. BOTH SIDEBAGS CAN HOLD A HELMET & HAVE AN INTERIOR SHELF & AND SIDE STRAPS.
THE TOPBOX IS ADJUSTABLE TO 3 HEIGHTS VIA INTERIOR CLIPS. IT CAN HOLD '2' HELMET'S. MOST HARDCASES CANNOT HOLD ONE HELMET.

I am not sure which suppliers ship to Kenya. A couple quick searches I found UHS and CLK carry this tool, but I do not know their exact shipping zones. eBay also may be a choice? Sorry I can't be of more help on that!

Ahhhhhh..most people have a lishi decoder with the lishi cutters why are you impressioning this way..it’s ridiculous and redundant

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Because this tool was specifically made for Auto's, so many Locksmiths haven't even thought of using this on Res/Com.
Even if you have a Lishi Decoder, you still have to know how to use the tool and impression a key. I use this primarily on Garage/Mailbox/Cabinet locks that Lishi hasn't made a decoder for.
This video is designed as a How-To-Video, so I elaborate and go into detail in my videos to help new and aspiring Locksmiths as well as seasoned pros.
