Game ending for sure. Normally I'd have Marksman with some levels for this scenario but I was behind in a lot of areas and this was one in particular that I never got going. Luckily he didn't pick up on it.
I think Farseer is the best unit in the game until round five or so. I call it a "bridge unit." It can carry you on rounds three and four--maybe even five. And if you get levels and especially levels with items, it can become an actual carry for the rest of the game.
Its got enough AOE to clear chaff and enough DPS to kill most units. Just falls off later when more specialised chaff clear becomes available and better DPS shows up, both of which do their job better.
I was thinking at round 6 a couple of vulcans would have shut his chaff down nicely. I am glad you explained why you didn't do it, I was thinking that somehow you were missing the obvious counter.
Nice analysis of your game and great come back :) Are you doing your MMR tracker chart at the end of each played day or after each battle? Just curious :)
That is a really good question. I'm surprised I haven't been asked this before. The one I show is just a snapshot of where I am when I record that particular video; it does not represent my MMR after each day. I keep detailed stats and notes of each ladder game I play. I'll show my MMR from my last 100 games or so in the next video. 😁
@@WhoopedGG I'm in finance and analytics so yeah, couldn't help asking :p I wish the game would provide way more analysis and stats... thanks for clarification though. I think it shows nicely the progress and i might start doing the same as you actually... but it's a bit annoying to track everything manually. How many games per day do you play on average and how long do you spend on the stats? Or maybe you can answer all these questions in a video if others are interested :)
@@Jeeboo007 I wish the game had a detailed stats page as well. It varies, but lately I would say I average about 15 per day. I keep track of the date, the game number for that day, time, opponent's name, their MMR, my MMR, the result, the MMR gained or lost, which starting spec I am, my starting units, my opponent's starting spec, my opponent's starting units, what round it ended in, if I should review the replay, and then I take quick notes about the game itself, like what my opponent did, what I did in response, etc. It's actually not that bad. I can prefill a lot of it out prior to the game starting, like the date, game number, time I queue, and my MMR. During the loading screen I can fill in my opponent's name and MMR. When the game starts, I just click a couple drop downs for starting specs and starting units. After the game I just write down whatever I'd want myself to know about it when I review it later. I feel like it helps break down what happened.
@@WhoopedGG 15/day?? it's like a full day at 30mn/game :) You collect quite a lot, I guess you have double screen to type the name / MMR at start in 10 sec. It's quite complete set! I'm too lazy to do that much but maybe just tracking games and MMR changes would be good to start... thanks for all the clarifications, still, appreciated :)
I see this exact scenario over and over and over in 1500 range. As soon as I see 3-5 units of chaff and 4 or so units of sledges, I'm building a vulcan with ignite or scorch and then it's usually fine. They'll respond to it but it keeps chaff and sledges in check. The whole video I'm like BUILD A VULCAN OMG and then didn't know you don't like them lol. 2-3 vulcans with some anti air support here would've ended the game fairly quick.
@@rocortega2064 Yeah even with the exp nerf sledges are still strong if they get a level or two. A lot of people don't expect the vulcan but it clears so many of my games easily. Probably my favorite unit at this point.
I don't use the Vulcan though because I'm a potato. Typically I can handle this pretty well--the exception being if they get the XR Sledge card. But this one was tough in particular for whatever reason. But you're right, Vulcan absolutely owns.
I'm much more interested in the opponent's build and what he could have done here: his brain just seemed to break when he was so close, getting useless things like range buff Farseers, techs on Crawlers, and those Tarantulas. Funny enough, if he knew it was going to go multiple rounds and was paying attention, a Farseer on each flank followed by AM tech would have shut down the missiles. Maybe even AM Mustangs just for the surprise of all his chaff surviving. I get it though, it's very easy to feel all your plans falling apart in front of Acid Scorpions. Whenever I see them, I hear a voice whispering in my ear, "replicate baaaalllsss..." It does not work out often.
I'm guessing most of his games end really early, either with him losing pretty badly or him just absolutely thrashing his opponent. Fortunately for me, although I was a potato, I did just enough to barely hang on--although it was wrecking my economy, it simultaneously dragged the game out to a point where he became weaker. I think AM would have been a great move, but he could have done it with missile devices just behind the front line. I think that would have put the game away earlier. He also could have went Armored Wraith and the game would have been put away. I made a lot of mistakes. And I mean a lot. Most comments say not to build Mustangs, but that's not where I went wrong, in my opinion. I think Mustangs are a very versatile unit, and while I admit they aren't good against Sledgehammers, typically, such an attack is followed by air--which the Mustangs would be good against. And in the meantime, I get chaff clear. So, they are an essential part of my composition. Where I went wrong, I believe, is that I shattered my economy to pieces, which means I delayed getting Scorpions out and didn't develop my board like I should have.
Yeah, Vulcans are an extremely common occurrence--Best Partner strategy, which is insanely tough; Range + Scorch, which is insanely tough (and then with the option of adding Best Partner on top of it); or even if it's just Incendiary Bomb--Vulcans can do it all.
Crikey, I think your opponent had blinkers on. A quick switch to air units and this could have been a very different ending. Though this a great showcase for your tenacity and ability to forge a comeback.
Armored Wraith pivot and it was a wrap =/ Normally I have Marksman for such a scenario but I was so behind I didn't. I got lucky he didn't pick up on it.
Oooff, feel bad for the other dude. That lost must sting something fierce. I can't tell if his strategy is actually very strong and you just barely managed to last long enough to counter, or if it's not actually that strong of a strategy and you just didn't go about countering it properly early on... Thoughts? I personally have a weird obsession with Sledgehammers, so I really want this to be a viable strategy!
It's both. I typically handle this well. I think XR Sledge card is the most broken card in the game or close to it, but aside from that, I'm usually good against Sledgehammers. That being said, if you don't execute your strategy well, it can get out of hand. Even if you do execute your strategy well, it can still be difficult to stop, so it absolutely is a viable strategy. In this particular case, I didn't do a good job defending against it, so it looked more effective than it should have been. But it was still tough. I think that's because normally instead of 20+ things of teched chaff, people usually follow up with air, so it caught me off guard.
@@WhoopedGG Last Night someone tried to do the same Sledgie strat, fortunately no ER card, reacted to Scorp fast and got 2 Wraiths for drop to deal with the chaff, sadly lost bad in the last round 'cause it was 2v2 and my teammie got steam rolled by nuke + triple factory spewing everything spam.
I feel like once the fangs get 2+ techs out of: range, mech rage and ignite, their status as 'chaff' becomes a bit dubious, they're more closely related to mustangs at that point in my mind, they're not just filler rubbish anymore! EDIT: Oh I'm not paying attention, those are crawlers, not fangs, nevermind 😂
Your opponent had the same blinders on you did. Wraiths with armor, especially elite recruit wraiths with armor win rounds 8,9, and 10. He only needs to win one round. It happens to all of us.
You are hilarious, Cycle. I appreciate you calling me out for my potatoness. Truly. I played this game terribly (which is also part of the reason I uploaded it).
Mustang as chaff clear feels pretty meh, especially vs Crawlers. I know the whole game is just "Get better chaff clear" but still XD. Crawlers just tank really well vs mustangs, as that particular starting pack likes to remind us all. Also made a huge difference picking up scorp range, suddenly able to hit sledges without getting killed first. I wonder if a lvl or two on scorpions would have helped given some of the sledges were absorbing multiple shots.
I ruined my economy so badly I felt like there wasn't a way for me to level the Scorpions and keep up with everything else. So what I tried to do instead was get Acid in order to make my Mustangs (and the Scorpions) more effective, given its damage multiplier. You're 100% correct though. With proper supply management, I should have leveled them. Everything was delayed because of my potatoness. I didn't get tech into Scorpions until round 7, which is just unacceptable 😂
Just my opinion, but I think getting 4 Mustang early on wasn’t helping. Maybe 2 to cover the flanks but 4 deployments is too much to not have a counter to his sledges.
should have not picked mustangs, they are not as good at chaff clear as sledges that you had already unlocked and suck vs tanks. Scorpions are pretty important vs levelled tanks. tanks counter storm callers when upgraded and so storms are only an early game counter. Snipers/phoenixes early would have helped a lot, you didnt have much chaff and put 1100 and 4 deploys into those mustungs that are countered by the sledges that are his focus.
I disagree about not getting Mustangs. I do agree with you, however, that Storms weren't the best choice and that Marksman would have helped a lot--as would Scorpions faster and with earlier tech. Thanks for the comment!!
He had the option of cheesing you with armored lvl2 wraiths or rays at the end, you're lucky he didn't realize.
That would be devastating

Farseer regularly surprises me how tough and also how hard hitting it is
But double tap on Sabertooth feels so good
Yeah I think they need to make it a more specialized unit tbh. It can carry fairly easily all the way up to like 1500 mmr lol

In the end you managed to pull it off man! Maybe it was just a matter of nerves. Keep it cool!
Mass sledges are beatable afterall... Even if storms are not that effective, with he EMP are usefull
Calm and composed!! (Except in reality I was stressed lmao)
I was thinking at round 6 a couple of vulcans would have shut his chaff down nicely.

I wonder how many people watch going, "how does this guy ever win?" Or "You dummy! Build Vulcans!"
"i was being prideful and im not proud of that"
something for any and everyone to ruminate on.

Definitely taking “never enough chaff” to its extreme
I used to just mass chaff like that until I hit 1300 MMR. That was the MMR people would counter mass ground armies with Inc bomb vulcans.
