    I had the pleasure of singing this as a 1st tenor in H.S. and without question was ALMOST identical in every way except for the outstanding bass with this choir. I have listened to MANY versions of Cherubic Hymn No. 7... and THIS version is BY FAR the best... and MOST moving.

      @ltlarrow1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I don't think Bortniansky indicated all the unnatural crescendos and decrescendos exhibited here.

    • @rogerlewis7894
      @rogerlewis7894 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      please define "unnatural" in this context... I have kept all my vocal music scores from my choir... I will have to search for it to see if the crescendos and decrescendos were included in the arrangement.

    • @ltlarrow1
      @ltlarrow1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps I am being somewhat picky. I have the score from 2 different sources. they are similar, but not identical. The music from St Vladimir's Seminary is pretty faithful to the original scores. The dynamics of the first half range from piano to pianissimo, with slight crescendos. The second half certainly contains parts that are double forte, but nothing in the first half would call for double forte. Also, there are no ritard markings in the second half. Lastly, I am an Orthodox choir director, so my experiences singing this hymn are in a liturgical context, i.e. the music serves the text. btw, I too have heard many many recordings of this. Everybody has their own tastes; I have heard some I consider better, and some worse.

    • @rogerlewis7894
      @rogerlewis7894 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not only are their differences with the interpretation of dynamics but the tempo as well... some with a faster tempo, others even slower than this...as it's all up to the director. I am not as accomplished as you, however, I was the student director both in H.S. also in college... What do you think about the outstanding bass in this rendition? some may suggest it is too prodomanant.. which is normally the case with sopranos in most choirs.. it is a challenge to get a full balance in a live performance...but easlily corrected in studio via the mixing board.

    It all makes me so proud of my Byzantine-Mediterranean roots...."Let us now stand boldly with the Cherubim as they sing their anthems of joy and praise as their Master and King arrives in glory unseen by human eyes, for behold He comes in triumph!
    As we behold Him, let us put aside all earthly worries and cares as we sing Halleluiah! Holy, Holy, Holy Lord! God of Power and might, The Cosmos is truly filled with His Glory! Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

    Heartbreaking to hear this beautiful chant is no commonplace. Very sad.
    Have heard that there is a school of Byzantine music somewhere in London,.
    But this is a masterpiece of music and singing, heavenly.
    It surely represents the due praise we should render to God.

      I have shared most of the material with Zlatopolsky that I have since much of it is difficult to obtain these days. There are still some Melodiya LPs floating around out there that we need to snag somehow.

    When I was a kid, we sang it in Greek. Now, 50 odd years later, the choir director at my church not only has never heard of it but refuses to do Slavonic things, although we rarely do the minor arpeggio one. Go figure. Another choir I sing in does it in English, but only once a year.

    I have sung No. 7 many times under different conductors... at times this choir sounds angry...especially at the beginning of the (for want of a better word) first movement... out of character from the meaning of the words.... as Maestro Jaroslaw Babuniak said... (translated from Ukrainian) Never shout at God... Also the last syllable in alleluja (last word) was accented ... the accent should be on the lu... I think tUSSR Russian Academic Capella was getting over enthusiastic which belies their talent.

      @@yevvgor Русь was not Россия ... as I understand it ... the Русь you are mistakenly quoting is Киевская Русь....Muscovite Rus was formed about 1200... some time after Киевская Русь.... is suppose by your logic Беларусь is also Russian ... ooops sorry Catherine II conquered Беларусь in 1795 but we can rewrite history as per Stalin... I suppose the HOLODOMOR did not exist? either???? Oh yeah western world agrees it did... Having said all this Constantinople recognises Киевская Русь as Ukrainian (work it out from the latest Tomos which is typically been argued by Kirill of Moscow) ... Anyway Ukraine is Ukraine and independent even though the Russians are trying to invade it (U.N. sources).
