    This has been on TH-cam for a while, but without the information on the oktavist and the exact notes on this recording. This recording contains the lowest notes ever recorded without amplification (e.g., "basses" who use vocal fry and microphones to reach these notes). Zlatopolsky drops from A1 to D1 repeatedly: at 1:35, 2:47, 4:50, 6:04, and at the end of the piece. At 4:50, he even drops down to a low C1--an octave below low C--and is clearly audible over the entire choir.
    Here is a short biography of Zlatopolsky for those interested.
    Mikhail (Motja Moiseevich) Zlatoposlky was born to a family of Don Cossacks in the province of Rostov. Although his family were ethnically Jewish, they converted to the Russian Orthodox Church. After the Revolution, when the Orthodox singing moved into the category of marginal employment, the number of bass profundo sharply declined. Soviet oktavists enjoyed intense demand: during the Brezhnev era, Moscow choirs outbid each other for Zlatopolsky as the star player. Zlatoposlky's place of employment was considered the Union Radio Choir, but he also performed with a number of Orthodox, Catholic, and Lutheran churches--even at times in the synagogue. Zlatopolsky recorded with the Don Cossacks Choir of Russia, conducted by Marcel Verhoeff-not to be confused with the more famous Cossack Choir under Serge Jaroff. He also can be heard singing Sviridov's Kursk Songs with Moscow State Chamber Choir under Vladimir Minin.
    Besides his musical career, Zlatopolsky also worked as an actor on several Russian films and TV shows, often playing the part of a Russian Orthodox priest. Although these parts were mostly small, his most prominent roles include "Yemelyan Pugachev" (1978),"Three Years" (1980), "We are Not Crowned in the Church" (1982), and "Storm over Russia" (1992). Other video footage of Zlatopolsky may be seen on the DVD "Great Singers of Russia, Vol 1 - Chaliapin, et. al"
    (2003). • Video
    Zlatopolky's range extends down to a C1. Even in the world of basso profundos and oktavists, Zlatopolsky's range is exceptional for it's depth. Chesnokov differentiates between a basso profundo whose range ends around C2, and strong oktavists, whose range may extend as low as G1 or F1. Zlatopolsky's range extends half an octave below this lowest classification. Before the Guinness Book of World Records began considering amplified vocal fry as a valid part of the vocal range, Zlatopolsky was listed as the lowest bass in the world with a documented low note of Eb1. He can be heard singing down to C1 in the Don Cossack's Choir performance of "Prayer for the Dead." His upper register is featured prominently in "Three Years" (1980), where he chants up to C#3.
    Zlatopolsky was not only known for the sheer depth of his range, but also his resonance and power. One Moscow chorister describes the experience of singing with Zlatopolsky thus: "At one concert on a small stage, we stood in close alignment. I was next to Mikhail (although I like the authentic 'Motja' better). We were performing Kedrov's 'Our Father,' and Zlatopolsky went into the contra octave. His voice began to shake the bodies of us who were standing near to him. I was not up to singing--stood there in a kind of trance, trying to comprehend the experience." Another remembers seeing Zlatopolsky perform a choral cycle by Gavrilin. He noted that generally oktavists, along with the rest of the choir, need to be precisely on pitch in order for such notes in the contra-octave to be clearly audible--otherwise the sonority is ruined. During the performance, however, he recounts that the rest of the choir sounded like "nothing more than a squeak" above the sound of Zlatopolsky's voice. Despite his enormous voice, Zlatopolsky was a relatively small man--an exception in the world of profundos.
    Zlatopolsky passed away in 2001.

    Zlatopolsky's voice has both that "edgy lazer beam"quality and at the same time able to produce rich harmonics. it is much like the tone of a bass trombone

      I have a similar quality to my voice... but at G1 (my lowest projected note). Just the fact Zlatopolsky could do this down to C1 is mind-boggling... even to a low bass, such as myself.

    This man is the deepest, most resonant bass voice that I have ever heard (and I have heard them all) Nic Val sounds like a man with a sore throat and one lung compared to Zlatopolsky. One big difference between him and pretty much all the other octavists is that he hits the deep notes every time the phrase appears, unlike the rest who go for the deep note once, right at the end of the song. To do this repeatedly shows this man was exceptional in every respect. Goodness knows what it must have been like to stand next to him. The American gospel basses have the microphone shoved almost down their throat and bass amps and speakers to achieve their audible bottom end. JD Sumner had a genuinely deep voice as does Tim Riley and a few others (non friers that is) But they would not be heard in a choir setting like Zlato is. He is simply the gold standard!

    The depth, power, resonance, and timbre of his voice is something magical. I have never heard someone sing this low without sounding like croaking fry in an open (non amplified, non microphone) setting. I once heard a man at a gas station who had the lowest speaking voice I ever heard. I could FEEL it across the room from very far away. I'd imagine Zlatopolsky's voice would be similar, and I wish I could feel that resonance in person vs. a recording. Truly remarkable.

    Fairly enough the record goes to Zlatopolsky himself with a note of Eb1.

    I came to the awareness of the Oktavists only recently. As a much younger man I revered Jerome Hines and J.D. Sumner, and worked with my voice in their light to reach the resonance and power they seemed to naturally possess. Hearing Mikhail Zlatopolsky in different works makes me wish I had known of him when I was working with my voice. He would have completed my "trinity" of masters in the greatest sense. As Proverbs 27:17 states: "Iron sharpens iron"- this is very true for vocalists. I was beyond happy to sing Hine's "Grand Inquisitor" and Sumner's "This Old House". I would probably cry if I could sing "Prayer For The Dead" and reach the glorious depths of Zlato's
    notes, whether over a choir or not.

    If it is C1, then it is technically triple low C. Low C (C3) is is only one octave below middle C (C4), and is an easy low for most tenors to sing. Double low C (C2) is where a lot of basses start to lose resonance and power, and some can't hit it at all. Triple low C (C1) is the low note in this song, and I don't know many basses that are even capable of hitting it without fry or subharmonics, let alone at all...

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      No, C2 is "low C". It is called such, because it is the dividing line for bass-baritones and true basses. C3 is referred to as "small C" and is typically the lowest note sang by tenors. The Helmholtz designation gives C1 the abbreviation of "CC", hence, meaning it is double low C. Triple low C (C0) is the lowest note used in musical notation... although, there are a few instruments that can venture into the negative octaves.

    I might be in the minority here, but I’m not a huge fan of his 0 octave and low 1 octave stuff AS MUCH as I’m a fan of his C2 for example. I have a huge amount of respect for his range and technique (he’s undeniably a beast and rocks them, no one could sing those low 0 octave notes better than him) just saying I feel like C2 is low enough and anything extra is just godly, then to go an octave below is really just unnecessary in my opinion. That’s just a personal preference of mine. Like I said, I have a huge amount of respect for this guy and how much of a beast he is on those D1s and C1s, that’s just absurdly low. This guy is an absolute animal. But like I said, I think his C2 is much more impressive sounding than these.

People say that my voice does not fit to my appearance. Sometimes in the morning, i can go down to G1 or G#1. And to around F#1 if i am ill. Of course the reason for that is simply moisture on the vocal cords. It is already heavy enough to drop the voice by a few semitones. To go down to C1, the vocal cords would not even need to be much larger. Just slightly longer and thicker. Vocal cords are usually 15-20 mm long. Even in Zlatopolskys case probably 30 at best.

  • @zdusiu
    @zdusiu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have been listening to this piece over and over again for months now and came to a sad conclusion. The D1's and the C1 are not audible for me at all. I wondered if it's due to poor video quality, but the same problem persists in other, high-quality video.
    I'm listening to music through my Superlux HD 669 headphones (cheap, but very underestimated stuff) and I'm certain that they're not the problem. What else then? The lame, motherboard-integrated audio device on my PC? Or is it just that my on hardware (ears) are not capable of recording such sounds? Any suggestions?

    • @TheOktavismChannel
      @TheOktavismChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Andrzej Andrzejowy The notes are low enough that you have to be listening for them. It's similar to how when most people listen to a band, they may not "hear" each individual instrument and vocal part. What's more impressive is Zlatopolsky's volume around G1 or so. Unparalleled! Like most notes at the edge of the singer's range, we lose some quality, so the C1 and D1 are by no means loud, although certainly audible for most.

    • @zdusiu
      @zdusiu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +k barber "you have to be listening for them" - perfectly phrased. It's kind of nice and a bit nerdy to look for a certain note rather than just listening to the choir as a whole but I guess I like it. What's absolutely amazing to me is that I've noticed that it depends on a day whether I can hear the D1's or just know that they are there. Or maybe it's just my imagination. Either way - it's almost aunimaginable how powerful of a voice Motja had.
      I guess I will never stop listening to this particular recording.

      Напишу по-русски, чтобы не коверкать английский. Ноты ниже G1 очень сложно услышать в такой громкости как та же G1 или выше, особенно в хоре. Они слышны как гул, или дуновение ветра. Вы не поверите, но проблема в высокой громкости. Низкие ноты прекрасно слышны на низкой громкости. Попробуйте.
